Chapter 16

โ€œKatrinaโ€™s here!โ€ Ivy nearly leapt up in excitement, rushing to the door.

Katrina was more than a best friend; she was closer than a sister.

โ€œKatrina!โ€ Ivy called out, her voice bubbling with joy as she spotted a girl climbing out of an old, battered Mercedes parked in the driveway. She quickened her pace, but as she drew closer, something stopped her in her tracks. The smile faded from her face; her footsteps faltered.

If Katrina had come straight to her house, she must have heard Ivy was back. And if sheโ€™d heard that, then she probably knew all the ugly rumors swirling around: the whispers about Ivy being โ€œHIV positive,โ€ about โ€œhaving a child with an old man.โ€

Would Katrina look down on her now?

Before Ivy could steel herself, Katrina spotted her and, unable to contain her excitement, rushed forward and pulled her into a fierce embrace.

โ€œOh my God! It really is you! Ivy, youโ€™re alive. Youโ€™re really back!โ€ Katrina sobbed, her voice raw as she clung to the friend sheโ€™d lost for three years.

Katrinaโ€™s hug nearly knocked Ivy off balance, her heart quivering with disbelief and gratitude.

Katrina didnโ€™t think she was dirty. She wasnโ€™t avoiding her.

Did that mean she didnโ€™t know, or that she just didnโ€™t care?

โ€œKatrinaโ€ฆโ€ Ivyโ€™s voice was thick with emotion, her eyes stinging with tears.

Katrina finally pulled back, scanning Ivy from head to toe. โ€œYouโ€™ve lost so much weight! God, what did they do to you? Look at your armsโ€“those scarsโ€ฆโ€

Her fingers traced the marks gently, tears streaming down her cheeks.

Standing in the doorway, Rosetta and Emma watched the reunion, both frowning deeply.

โ€œKatrina, are you out of your mind? Donโ€™t you care about your own health?โ€ Emma called out, staying a safe distance away.

Katrina turned to glare at her. โ€œWhatโ€™s that supposed to mean?โ€

โ€œShe has HIV! She had a kid with some old man! And canโ€™t you smell her? Sheโ€™s been living with pigs for three years!โ€ Emmaโ€™s voice was shrill, her words sharp and deliberate, as if daring anyone to miss her meaning.

Katrinaโ€™s brows knit together as she looked back at Ivy. โ€œIs this how they treat you now that youโ€™re home?โ€

โ€œJust ignore her,โ€ Ivy said with a small, confused laugh. โ€œButโ€“are you really not scared of catching anything from me?โ€

Katrina rolled her eyes. โ€œI have a brain; hugging you isnโ€™t going to kill me.โ€

Ivyโ€™s chest tightened with gratitude.

โ€œKatrina, seriouslyโ€ฆ Havenโ€™t you ever heard โ€˜better safe than sorryโ€™?โ€ Emma tried again, undeterred.

But Katrina didnโ€™t waste another second on her. She grabbed Ivyโ€™s hand. โ€œLetโ€™s get out of here. I have a million things to say to you.โ€

Fed up with the Windsorsโ€™ contempt, Katrina didnโ€™t even bother with a goodbye. She pulled Ivy straight to her car, slamming the door behind them.

As the old Mercedes pulled away, Emma turned back to Rosetta. โ€œMom, shouldnโ€™t we tell the Lesters? If Katrina gets sick, theyโ€™ll blame us for sure.โ€

Rosetta nodded. โ€œWe should call them. Itโ€™s our responsibility.โ€

โ€œExactly! Katrina must be out of her mind.โ€

The Lesters were another old-money family in Neo Haven. But Katrina, despite being their eldest daughter, held little standing.

Her father had made his fortune then promptly cheated, fathering two more children. The divorce was ugly. Her stepmotherโ€“once the mistress, now the new wifeโ€“barely tolerated Katrina, who walked on eggshells at home.

โ€œIโ€™m living in the grad student dorms now,โ€ Katrina said as she drove, glancing at Ivy in the passenger seat. โ€œI only found out you were back when I went home last night, and when I couldnโ€™t get hold of you, I came over first thing this morning.โ€

She glanced at her friend again, unable to stop her tears from falling. โ€œI canโ€™t believe youโ€™re alive. Thatโ€™s all that matters.โ€

Ivyโ€™s heart clenched. โ€œKatrina, youโ€™re the only one who doesnโ€™t judge me.โ€

โ€œJudge you? Never. I just wish I wasnโ€™t a broke studentโ€“if I had my own place, Iโ€™d get you out of that house for good.โ€

Ivy took in the state of Katrinaโ€™s carโ€“ancient, clearly a family castoffโ€“and realized her friendโ€™s situation wasnโ€™t much better.

โ€œKatrina, I have money. A lot of it. But I canโ€™t leave just yet,โ€ Ivy said quietly.

โ€œWhy not?โ€ Katrina asked, genuinely surprised.

Ivyโ€™s face hardened. โ€œThe one who set me up to be trafficked was Emma. But I donโ€™t have proof yet. I canโ€™t bring her to justice until I do. I have to-โ€
