Chapter 20
He let out a cold scoff. "That apology was utterly empty. Werenโt you once the darling of high society? Now all thatโs left is some brash, uncultured countrywoman?โ
Naylorโs eyes widened in alarm. โJamison!โ
That was way over the line. It was like rubbing salt into an open wound.
Ivy clenched her fists, biting her lower lip as she looked at him. After a brief hesitation, she finally asked, โWhat kind of apology do you want?โ
Jamison smiled, taking his time as he replied, โA full bow, ninety degrees. And say โ loudly โ โDr. Ludwig, Iโm sorry. I was wrong.โโ
Ivy stared at him, eyes round with humiliation.
Naylor tried again to intervene. โJamison, come on. Thatโs too much.โ
But Jamison was unmoved. No one had ever dared insult or disrespect him like this. Sure, sheโd had a rough life โ but none of it was his doing. Why should he be expected to show endless patience and forgiveness?
Ivy stood her ground, the moment frozen in tense silence.
Just then, Katrina rushed over, looping her arm through Ivyโs and shooting a worried glance her way. She turned to Jamison, apologizing repeatedly, โIโm so sorry, Dr. Ludwig. We got it wrong โ this is all a misunderstanding.โ She was clearly frightened; she never imagined her best friend would end up insulting Dr. Ludwig! Everyone knew Dr. Ludwig was not only brilliant and highly respected, but also notoriously aloof and difficult to approach. Worse yet, he was a whole generation above them โ maybe not that much older, but definitely their senior in every sense.
Jamison tilted his chin, his authority absolute. โI want her to apologize.โ
Katrinaโs voice trembled with anxiety. โDr. Ludwig, Ivy was just trying to stand up for me,โ
But Ivy pulled Katrina back, then bowed deeply โ ninety degrees โ right there in front of the entire restaurant. She raised her voice, โDr. Ludwig, Iโm sorry. I was wrong.โ Only then did Jamison give a small, satisfied smirk, though his eyes stayed icy and unreadable. All around, the other diners turned to stare.
Naylor stepped in, trying to smooth things over. โItโs all just a misunderstanding โ now itโs cleared up, thatโs what matters.โ
โThank you. Sorry again for disturbing your meal.โ Katrina kept bowing her head in apology, then quickly dragged Ivy toward the exit.
A few tables away sat Sammy Ludwick โ the very man whoโd been pestering Katrina. Seeing Katrina about to leave without even speaking to him, he jumped up and hurried after her.
โKatrina, whatโs that supposed to mean? You brought someone here just to yell at me?โ Sammy grabbed Katrinaโs arm, scowling fiercely.
Katrina, emboldened by her best friendโs support and no longer worried about having money for her motherโs treatment, shot back without hesitation, โNo need โ I can yell at you all by myself! Listen up, Sammy Ludwick: I donโt like you. You make me sick. Iโm never going to marry you! So why donโt you just get lost?โ Sheโd been wanting to say that for ages; after holding it in for so long, she finally got her chance.
Sammyโs face turned a violent shade of purple as he jabbed a finger at her, threatening, โYouโll pay for this! Iโm telling your father!โ
โGo ahead! I donโt care โ I have nothing to do with the Lester family anymore!โ With that, Katrina spat at his feet and strode off, head held high.
Once they were back in the car, Ivyโs voice was thick with regret. โThis is my fault. I should have checked โ I accused the wrong person.โ
Katrina burst out laughing, trying to comfort her. โDonโt worry about it. That Dr. Ludwig is famously cold and standoffish โ donโt let it get to you. But Iโm curious, why did you think I was involved with him? My dad wishes! The Lester family isnโt even in his league.โ
Ivy scoffed. โHeโs not good enough for you.โ
โOh, no, youโve got that backward! Sure, heโs a bit of a loner, but heโs got a flawless background, heโs accomplished, tall, handsome, good manners โ the whole package. If anything, Iโm not good enough for him.โ
Ivy just shook her head. โWhatever. Letโs go eat โ weโve earned it.โ
โMy treat, to soothe your wounded pride,โ Katrina said with a grin.
Back in the restaurant, Naylor watched the two girls leave, clicking his tongue in amazement. He turned back to see his old friend staring out the window, and couldnโt help but tease, โWhatโs this? Enemies at first sight, and now youโre interested?โ
Jamisonโs retort was as sharp as ever. โSay that again and Iโll shut you up for good.โ
Naylor only grinned, undeterred. โIโve never seen you get so worked up over a woman. Maybe sheโs your type. But I heard Ivy was trafficked for three years, had a child with her captor, even caught HIV, and was only released when she was on deathโs doorโฆ If thatโs true, itโs probably for the best youโre not interested.โ
Jamisonโs voice was flat. โShe doesnโt have HIV.โ
โShe doesnโt? Then why did the Windsor family turn their backs on her? I heard they only took her in because they had to โ and made her live in the basement,โ Naylor said, baffled.
Jamison snorted. โWhy are you asking me? How should I know?โ
Naylor sighed. โI just feel bad for her, thatโs all.โ
โNo need. People who end up pitiful usually have themselves to blame,โ Jamison said coldly. After a few run-ins with Ivy, heโd never met someone so stubborn, self-righteous, and quick to lash out. With a personality like that, no wonder the Windsor family wanted nothing to do with her.
Naylor frowned at his friendโs harsh words, muttering, โThatโs pretty heartless, you know. After everything sheโs been through, you really donโt feel the slightest bit of sympathy?โ
