Chapter 20

He let out a cold scoff. "That apology was utterly empty. Werenโ€™t you once the darling of high society? Now all thatโ€™s left is some brash, uncultured countrywoman?โ€

Naylorโ€™s eyes widened in alarm. โ€œJamison!โ€

That was way over the line. It was like rubbing salt into an open wound.

Ivy clenched her fists, biting her lower lip as she looked at him. After a brief hesitation, she finally asked, โ€œWhat kind of apology do you want?โ€

Jamison smiled, taking his time as he replied, โ€œA full bow, ninety degrees. And say โ€“ loudly โ€“ โ€˜Dr. Ludwig, Iโ€™m sorry. I was wrong.โ€™โ€

Ivy stared at him, eyes round with humiliation.

Naylor tried again to intervene. โ€œJamison, come on. Thatโ€™s too much.โ€

But Jamison was unmoved. No one had ever dared insult or disrespect him like this. Sure, sheโ€™d had a rough life โ€“ but none of it was his doing. Why should he be expected to show endless patience and forgiveness?

Ivy stood her ground, the moment frozen in tense silence.

Just then, Katrina rushed over, looping her arm through Ivyโ€™s and shooting a worried glance her way. She turned to Jamison, apologizing repeatedly, โ€œIโ€™m so sorry, Dr. Ludwig. We got it wrong โ€“ this is all a misunderstanding.โ€ She was clearly frightened; she never imagined her best friend would end up insulting Dr. Ludwig! Everyone knew Dr. Ludwig was not only brilliant and highly respected, but also notoriously aloof and difficult to approach. Worse yet, he was a whole generation above them โ€“ maybe not that much older, but definitely their senior in every sense.

Jamison tilted his chin, his authority absolute. โ€œI want her to apologize.โ€

Katrinaโ€™s voice trembled with anxiety. โ€œDr. Ludwig, Ivy was just trying to stand up for me,โ€

But Ivy pulled Katrina back, then bowed deeply โ€“ ninety degrees โ€“ right there in front of the entire restaurant. She raised her voice, โ€œDr. Ludwig, Iโ€™m sorry. I was wrong.โ€ Only then did Jamison give a small, satisfied smirk, though his eyes stayed icy and unreadable. All around, the other diners turned to stare.

Naylor stepped in, trying to smooth things over. โ€œItโ€™s all just a misunderstanding โ€“ now itโ€™s cleared up, thatโ€™s what matters.โ€

โ€œThank you. Sorry again for disturbing your meal.โ€ Katrina kept bowing her head in apology, then quickly dragged Ivy toward the exit.

A few tables away sat Sammy Ludwick โ€“ the very man whoโ€™d been pestering Katrina. Seeing Katrina about to leave without even speaking to him, he jumped up and hurried after her.

โ€œKatrina, whatโ€™s that supposed to mean? You brought someone here just to yell at me?โ€ Sammy grabbed Katrinaโ€™s arm, scowling fiercely.

Katrina, emboldened by her best friendโ€™s support and no longer worried about having money for her motherโ€™s treatment, shot back without hesitation, โ€œNo need โ€“ I can yell at you all by myself! Listen up, Sammy Ludwick: I donโ€™t like you. You make me sick. Iโ€™m never going to marry you! So why donโ€™t you just get lost?โ€ Sheโ€™d been wanting to say that for ages; after holding it in for so long, she finally got her chance.

Sammyโ€™s face turned a violent shade of purple as he jabbed a finger at her, threatening, โ€œYouโ€™ll pay for this! Iโ€™m telling your father!โ€

โ€œGo ahead! I donโ€™t care โ€“ I have nothing to do with the Lester family anymore!โ€ With that, Katrina spat at his feet and strode off, head held high.

Once they were back in the car, Ivyโ€™s voice was thick with regret. โ€œThis is my fault. I should have checked โ€“ I accused the wrong person.โ€

Katrina burst out laughing, trying to comfort her. โ€œDonโ€™t worry about it. That Dr. Ludwig is famously cold and standoffish โ€“ donโ€™t let it get to you. But Iโ€™m curious, why did you think I was involved with him? My dad wishes! The Lester family isnโ€™t even in his league.โ€

Ivy scoffed. โ€œHeโ€™s not good enough for you.โ€

โ€œOh, no, youโ€™ve got that backward! Sure, heโ€™s a bit of a loner, but heโ€™s got a flawless background, heโ€™s accomplished, tall, handsome, good manners โ€“ the whole package. If anything, Iโ€™m not good enough for him.โ€

Ivy just shook her head. โ€œWhatever. Letโ€™s go eat โ€“ weโ€™ve earned it.โ€

โ€œMy treat, to soothe your wounded pride,โ€ Katrina said with a grin.

Back in the restaurant, Naylor watched the two girls leave, clicking his tongue in amazement. He turned back to see his old friend staring out the window, and couldnโ€™t help but tease, โ€œWhatโ€™s this? Enemies at first sight, and now youโ€™re interested?โ€

Jamisonโ€™s retort was as sharp as ever. โ€œSay that again and Iโ€™ll shut you up for good.โ€

Naylor only grinned, undeterred. โ€œIโ€™ve never seen you get so worked up over a woman. Maybe sheโ€™s your type. But I heard Ivy was trafficked for three years, had a child with her captor, even caught HIV, and was only released when she was on deathโ€™s doorโ€ฆ If thatโ€™s true, itโ€™s probably for the best youโ€™re not interested.โ€

Jamisonโ€™s voice was flat. โ€œShe doesnโ€™t have HIV.โ€

โ€œShe doesnโ€™t? Then why did the Windsor family turn their backs on her? I heard they only took her in because they had to โ€“ and made her live in the basement,โ€ Naylor said, baffled.

Jamison snorted. โ€œWhy are you asking me? How should I know?โ€

Naylor sighed. โ€œI just feel bad for her, thatโ€™s all.โ€

โ€œNo need. People who end up pitiful usually have themselves to blame,โ€ Jamison said coldly. After a few run-ins with Ivy, heโ€™d never met someone so stubborn, self-righteous, and quick to lash out. With a personality like that, no wonder the Windsor family wanted nothing to do with her.

Naylor frowned at his friendโ€™s harsh words, muttering, โ€œThatโ€™s pretty heartless, you know. After everything sheโ€™s been through, you really donโ€™t feel the slightest bit of sympathy?โ€
