Listen to this chapter:

When Ivy arrived at the hospital, Jamison was already waiting, dressed and ready to go.

After their phone call, Jamison hadnโ€™t driven his own car. Instead, following Ivyโ€™s directions, he found her parking spot.

โ€œWhy didnโ€™t you drive yourself?โ€ Ivy rolled down her window, eyeing him curiously.

โ€œItโ€™s a hassle for two people to take two cars, donโ€™t you think? Hop out and take the passenger seatโ€”Iโ€™ll drive.โ€ Jamison opened her door before she could protest, motioning for her to get out.

Ivy raised an eyebrow. โ€œWhat, too macho to ride in a car driven by a woman?โ€

Jamison just grinned, leaned in, unbuckled her seatbelt, and pressed a kiss to her cheek. โ€œSilly, I just donโ€™t want you to get tired driving.โ€

He reached over, his hand brushing the back of her knee. โ€œWant me to carry you to the passenger seat?โ€

โ€œNo, no, donโ€™t!โ€ Ivy squeaked, pushing him away. โ€œI can get out myself.โ€

Jamison, victorious, stepped back with a knowing smile and waited for her. Today, Ivy had taken a little extra time with her appearance before heading out.

Her makeup was light, accentuating her bright, lovely features.

She wore a flowing dressโ€”elegant, feminine, and sophisticated.

Since she was driving, sheโ€™d chosen a pair of low-heeled leather shoes. She looked effortlessly fresh, yet undeniably captivating.

The reputation of Neo Havenโ€™s former leading socialite seemed only to be growing.

โ€œDressed up for me tonight?โ€ Jamison saw right through her little ploy and asked outright.

โ€œPlease. Donโ€™t flatter yourselfโ€”I just threw something on.โ€ Ivy, of course, wouldnโ€™t admit to any such thing, responding coolly.

Jamison just smiled, saying nothing. When she reached the passenger door and got in, he slid behind the wheel and adjusted his seat.

โ€œSo, where should we eat?โ€

โ€œHow about The Gilded Fork? Theyโ€™ve got a few dishes I really like.โ€ Ivy buckled up, answering offhandedly, before glancing at Jamison and adding with emphasis, โ€œDinnerโ€™s on me tonight.โ€

Jamisonโ€™s smile widened. โ€œAll right, Iโ€™ll let you treat me.โ€

They hit traffic on the way.

Jamison turned toward her.

Now that they had feelings for each other, every glance seemed to spark something new. Every little detail about the other became impossibly endearing.

Ivy felt his gaze and grew self-conscious. โ€œEyes on the road! Why are you looking at me?โ€

Dr. Ludwig chuckled and, out of the blue, said, โ€œI was actually supposed to have dinner with my department tonightโ€”birthday celebration for a colleague. But since you, Miss Ivy, finally asked me out, I ditched them to be with you.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ Ivyโ€™s eyes widened in surprise. โ€œWhy didnโ€™t you tell me?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s no big deal. I sent a group gift to apologize.โ€ Jamisonโ€™s smile grew even more mischievous. โ€œTold them I was with my girlfriend. They totally understood.โ€

Ivy stared at him, speechless, astonished by his lack of subtlety. He really didnโ€™t hold backโ€”practically wanted to broadcast it to the world.

โ€œIvy, since weโ€™ve got the license, when do you want to have the wedding?โ€

A wedding? Ivy was caught off guard, her mind immediately flashing back to a recent WhatsApp chat with Dr. Handsome, who was getting married soon. The group had been discussing weddings, joking about meeting up at someoneโ€™s ceremony.

Sheโ€™d told them she wasnโ€™t planning on having one.

And here Jamison was, bringing it up.

โ€œWith our backgrounds, donโ€™t you think weโ€™ve got enough on our plates? You want to make a big deal out of it?โ€ Ivy asked, genuinely puzzled.

Jamison answered matter-of-factly, โ€œWhy not? Weโ€™re both singleโ€”nothing stopping us from celebrating properly.โ€

Ivy fell silent, unable to argue.

Truth was, her mind was elsewhere tonight. She didnโ€™t have the energy to think about something as big as a wedding.

โ€œLetโ€™s talk about that later. Actually, thereโ€™s something else I wanted to discuss with you tonight.โ€ She quickly changed the subject, shifting to the real reason sheโ€™d insisted on dinner.
