Chapter 263
โIโll pick out a few investors with questionable reputations for them. When Adkins tries to win them over, heโll pull out every trick in the book. The Windsors will bend over backward to keep Emma aroundโthey wonโt kick her out for your sake, not when sheโs still useful to them. Theyโre just squeezing every last drop out of her,โ Jamison said, his tone calm but laced with irony.
Ivy listened quietly, a cold smile pulling at her lips. โExactly. Wouldnโt put it past them to try seducing the investors, or even stoop to some dirtier tricks. Whatever happens, if Emma gets tangled up with any of those men, sheโs doomed. Thereโs no way she comes out of that unscathed.โ
Jamisonโs eyes twinkled with good-natured amusement. โThatโs what I thought. Talking to someone sharp like you is such a relief.โ
Ivy actually laughedโa real, warm laugh this time, not the cold one from before.
Thinking back on what sheโd said to the Windsors earlier, she felt a pang of guilt. She turned to Jamison, her expression earnest. โBy the way, about what I said just now, I was just trying to get under their skin. Donโt take it to heart.โ
Of course Jamison understood.
But since sheโd brought it up, he figured he might as well address it. โAre you sure you didnโt mean any of it?โ
โOf course not. I know exactly how you treat me. If I still thought that way about you, Iโd be hopeless.โ
He grinned and nodded. โGood. So youโre not a little traitor after all. That puts my mind at ease.โ
Ivy smirked mischievously, then added, โBut honestly, when we first met, you were insufferableโaloof, cold, always keeping people at armโs length. Back then I thought, โWhat a waste of a handsome face.โโ
The smile froze on Jamisonโs face.
What had he ever done, really? Maybe talked less, kept a straight faceโwas that a crime?
Given his background and all the attention he attracted, if he didnโt keep people at bay, heโd spend every day just fending off women.
Seeing his silence, Ivy leaned in a little, teasing, โWhat, are you mad now?โ
โWhat do you think? Iโve softened up for you, but your sharp tongue hasnโt dulled a bit,โ Jamisonโs smile was half amusement, half mock protest.
โCome on, I was talking about before. Iโm much nicer to you now, arenโt I?โ
โHavenโt noticed.โ
โSo what should I do to make you notice?โ she asked, genuinely curious.
Jamison had been waiting for this. He thought it over, then replied with mock seriousness, โIโd like it if you were a bit more affectionateโlike a couple in love is supposed to be.โ
โAffectionate?โ Ivy blinked, puzzled. โYou meanโฆ that way? But I told you, even though we got married in a hurry, Iโm not ready for the whole married couple thing just yet.โ
Sheโd made it clear a few days agoโshe needed time before diving into that side of marriage.
Jamison realized sheโd misunderstood and hastily clarified, โOf course not. Being affectionate doesnโt only mean that. I just meant hugs and kissesโthose count too.โ
Ivy stared at him, speechless. So thatโs all he wantedโjust more hugs and kisses?
โBut you always do that whenever weโre togetherโฆโ
โThatโs because Iโm always the one making the move. I want you to take the initiative sometimes.โ
She considered this seriously. โAlright, Iโll do my best.โ
When they pulled up outside Ivyโs building, Jamison parked and turned to her, his expression growing more focused. โWeโll tackle the Windsors on two fronts. On your end, start quietly buying up their shares. On my side, Iโll set things up so Emma walks right into their trap.โ
He reached out, unable to resist gently tracing her cheek with his finger, and his stern expression melted into a smile.
