Chapter 361

Adela Ludwig couldnโ€™t help but complain a few times, insisting their trip had taken a tollโ€“no wonder Jamison had lost so much weight and looked so worn out. She kept reminding him to take it easy for a few days, to rest up and not rush back to work.

Jamison, thinking of the wound on his back, knew he couldnโ€™t work even if he wanted to, so he just nodded along with his motherโ€™s fussing.

After dinner, he was eager to make his escape, but Danny called him back.

โ€œJamison, come to my study for a minute.โ€

Jamison hesitated. โ€œCanโ€™t it wait a couple of days? Iโ€™m exhausted. I just want to go home and rest tonight.โ€

He really was at the end of his rope and just wanted to leave.

But to his father, those words only sounded like rebellion from an ungrateful son.

โ€œSo what now? I canโ€™t even get you to listen to me anymore?โ€ Dannyโ€™s eyebrows shot up in irritation.

Thad, knowing his brotherโ€™s condition, tried to intercede. โ€œDad, look at him. Heโ€™s worn out. Let him and Ivy head home.โ€

But the old man was stubborn as ever. With a stony face, he snapped, โ€œItโ€™ll only take a few minutes. Upstairs. Now.โ€ Then he marched off toward the study.

Jamison wanted nothing more than to turn and walk out, but Ivy whispered, โ€œJust go up for a bit. If youโ€™re not back down in ten minutes, Iโ€™ll come get you and say I need to leave.โ€

He shot her a wry look. โ€œDidnโ€™t know youโ€™d make such a good mediator.โ€

Dr. Ludwig didnโ€™t care about saving face in front of his parents, but he still listened to Ivy and headed upstairs.

Downstairs, Halley came running over, brightโ€“eyed and excited. โ€œAunt Ivy, come on! I want to show you my pets!โ€ She grabbed Ivyโ€™s hand and pulled her away.

Upstairs in the study, Danny settled into his chair and fixed his youngest son with a penetrating stare. โ€œAre you really planning to build a life with Ivy?โ€

Jamison sat down, quirking a smile. โ€œDo you really think I treat marriage as some kind of joke?โ€

His father shot him a look, then after a pause said, โ€œShe seems levelโ€“headed enough, and sheโ€™s good to you. If youโ€™re sure about this, your mother and I wonโ€™t stand in your way. But thereโ€™s one thingโ€“donโ€™t throw money into the Windsor familyโ€™s bottomless pit.โ€

The Ludwigs had spent the past few days thinking this over. There was no winning against their stubborn youngest son, so theyโ€™d decided to just go with the flowโ€“but some things needed to be said.

Jamison replied lazily, โ€œDidnโ€™t she already say at the hospital that sheโ€™d cut ties with her family? So you two can stop worrying.โ€

โ€œCut ties? Thatโ€™s easy to say, but blood is blood. You canโ€™t just sever it, and the law wonโ€™t recognize it either. If the Windsors go bankrupt or something happens to her parents, sheโ€™ll still be responsible for them.โ€

โ€œBeing responsible comes in different flavors. Sure, you can support someone with gourmet meals and silk sheets, but you can also just make sure theyโ€™re fed and clothed. The second option hardly costs anything.โ€

Dannyโ€™s face turned red with anger. โ€œYou really are unbelievable.โ€

Jamison just shrugged. โ€œMom always says, โ€˜Like father, like son.โ€™ So if Iโ€™m a scoundrel, Dad, youโ€™ve only got yourself to blame.โ€

Dannyโ€™s expression darkened. He snatched up a heavy wooden paperweight from his desk, ready to hurl it across the room, when suddenly the door burst open.

โ€œWhat do you think youโ€™re doing? At your age, still losing your temper and throwing things!โ€ Adela Ludwig rushed in, worry etched on her face. Sheโ€™d been lurking near the door, ready to intervene the moment this inevitable fatherโ€“son clash exploded.

Danny glowered at her. โ€œDid you hear what he just said?โ€

โ€œI heard it. And heโ€™s not wrong. Look at youโ€“still flying off the handle at your age. Heโ€™s young and stubborn, itโ€™s only natural.โ€
