Jamison ignored her, but inside, resentment burned. This woman! She had never truly cared for himโalways saw him as a gullible foolโyet somehow, she could fake concern so convincingly that even he almost believed it.
After a long, heavy silence, he shot back with icy sarcasm. โMust be tough for you.โ
โWhatโs that supposed to mean? Why are you being so passive-aggressive?โ
Ivy played dumb, though she understood perfectly wellโand was barely suppressing a smile. Feigning confusion, she asked in a tone of earnestness, โYou were fine when you showered earlier, but after you went to your study you came out looking like youโd swallowed a stick of dynamite. Are you sure you were just reviewing project files in there?โ
He didnโt answer, but her words made him strangely uneasy. Could she be suspicious about something?
โOr maybe you were talking to someone in the study? Did someone piss you off, and now youโre taking it out on me?โ Ivy pressed, her eyes glinting with mischief.
Jamison grew even more flustered, so he could only bark out a denial. โNo. Youโre overthinking it. I just got irritated thinking about you going back to campus, living in a dorm. Iโve done so much for you, and all you do is scheme to get away from me instead of showing any gratitude.โ
Ivy felt wronged. โHow am I ungrateful? Iโve given you everythingโwhat more do you want? Besides, Iโm just going back to school, not filing for divorce. How is that running away?โ
โWhen exactly did you give me everything?โ Jamison seized on her words.
โLoveโฆโ Ivy hesitated, suddenly remembering theyโd never actually slept together. She faltered, but quickly added, โThat was because I had issues, which you knew about. You respected me and didnโt force thingsโฆ So why are you blaming me now?โ
โThatโs not what Iโm saying.โ
โThatโs exactly what youโre saying.โ Ivy sat up, determined to hash it out. โAre you just picking a fight because youโre frustrated we havenโt slept together yet?โ
Jamison looked up at her, his expression unreadable. โIs that really how little you think of me?โ
โHow would I know? You guys are impossible to figure outโwho knows what youโre really thinking. You change moods so fast it gives me whiplash.โ
He opened his mouth as if to say something, then just sighed and muttered, โForget it. Letโs just go to sleep.โ
With that, he shut his eyes. But Ivy wasnโt ready to let it drop.
โIf you want it that badly, itโs not like Iโm refusing. But youโre still recovering, so we canโt just jump into things. Once youโre healed, weโll see what happens.โ
In truth, Ivy was curious herselfโwas she finally over her psychological barrier? If she could get past it and accept intimacy, then that โenergy-balancingโ therapy could finally be an option. Her period was coming up again, and the thought of her crippling cramps made her nervous.
Jamisonโs eyes widened in surprise. He studied her for a moment before asking, โYouโฆ think you could handle it now?โ
Ivy blushed, looking away. โIโm not sure. I guess weโll have to try and see. Maybe I can.โ
Jamison grew even more confused. From what he knew of Ivy, she wasnโt the type to take intimacy lightly. Sheโd never sleep with a man she didnโt loveโespecially not when she still had so much emotional baggage to overcome.
So, which was the real Ivy? The one who chatted easily online, or the one sitting beside him now?
โItโs late. You should get some rest. Tomorrowโs going to be a busy day.โ Ivy picked up her phone, her voice calm and distant.
Jamison frowned, watching her. โYouโre not going to sleep?โ
โI just need to reply to a message.โ
The moment she said it, he tensed up againโhe knew exactly who she was texting.
