Chapter 404

The family had always been quite satisfied with their future son-in-law and were about to let Micah ruin things now.

Ivy was just as puzzled, muttering under her breath, โ€œWhatโ€™s Micah even doing here? Emma couldnโ€™t have been foolish enough to send him an invitation, right?โ€

Jamison shook his head slightly. โ€œHe doesnโ€™t have an invitation. If he did, security wouldnโ€™t be stopping him.โ€

โ€œTrue! So he just showed up uninvited, looking for trouble,โ€ Ivy thought to herself. This party was turning into one dramatic scene after another.

Meanwhile, by the ballroom entrance, security staff were blocking Micah, who was trying to force his way in. The commotion quickly caught Sheridan Carterโ€™s attention.

Emma spotted her ex and was just as stunned.

When her parents briskly walked toward Micah, Emma grabbed Sheridanโ€™s arm as he was about to follow them and urged him, โ€œLet my parents take care of it. We should keep mingling with the guests.โ€

Sheridan shot her a sharp look, his tone irritated. โ€œYouโ€™re still in touch with him?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€

โ€œThen why is he here?โ€

โ€œHow should I know?โ€ Emma shot back, then paused and added, โ€œMaybeโ€ฆ maybe he heard about the engagement and regrets breaking up.โ€

As she said it, a hint of pride crept into her voice, convinced that Micah still couldnโ€™t let her go.

But Sheridanโ€™s eyes narrowed, cold and intense, pinning her in place.

Emma suddenly felt guilty for her slip, quickly lowering her gaze and falling silent.

Across the room, Adkins and Rosetta stepped forward, blocking Micahโ€™s way.

โ€œWhat are you doing here? Youโ€™re not welcome,โ€ Adkins said bluntly, making it clear Micah should leave.

Micah, dressed in a sharp suit and appearing perfectly calm, didnโ€™t look like heโ€™d come to cause trouble.

โ€œAdkins, Emma and I were in love once. Now that sheโ€™s engaged, is it really so wrong for me to come and wish her well?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not necessary. You need to leaveโ€“now.โ€ Adkins moved forward, shoving him toward the exit.

Security joined in, trying to pull Micah away.

But Micah wouldnโ€™t budge.

He craned his neck, scanning the crowded room. โ€œEmma! Emma!โ€ he called out.

His shout made every guest turn their head, eager for more drama.

In the lounge area, Ivy looked even more bewildered. โ€œWhatโ€™s he playing at? Is he here to crash the wedding?โ€

Jamison scoffed. โ€œAs if heโ€™d have the guts.โ€

Inside the ballroom, Rosetta saw all the guests craning their necks with curiosity and grew even more anxious. โ€œMicah, get out! Emma was hurt enough by youโ€“sheโ€™s finally found someone good, so what exactly are you after?โ€

โ€œAunt Rosetta, youโ€™re misunderstanding. I really just came to wish Emma happiness. Please, let me speak to her for a moment.โ€ Micahโ€™s tone was polite, almost deferential.

โ€œNo! She doesnโ€™t want to see you. Just leaveโ€“now!โ€

As the argument got more heated, the Carters looked on in fury, grinding their teeth. They motioned for their son to hurry up and deal with the situation before it got even more embarrassing.

Sheridan couldnโ€™t hold back any longer; his face darkened as he strode over, ready to intervene.

โ€œHoney, please, honey!โ€ Emma stopped him again, desperate to prevent a bigger scene. She tried to soothe him, โ€œGo take care of our guests. Iโ€™ll get rid of him myself.โ€

โ€œYou just want to see your old flame, donโ€™t you?โ€ Sheridanโ€™s expression was thunderous.

โ€œOf course not! Heโ€™s nothing compared to you. I canโ€™t stand the sight of him anymore.โ€ Emma was an expert at calming men down; a few soft words and Sheridan relented, letting her go as she gathered her dress and pushed through the crowd.

Chapter 404E

She really did hate Micah.

If it hadnโ€™t been for him, her reputation wouldnโ€™t have been ruined, and she wouldnโ€™t have been forced to settle for someone like Sheridan.

But even if Sheridan wasnโ€™t perfect, the Carter family was wealthy and influential.

Emma was grateful they didnโ€™t hold her past against her and were willing to accept her.
