She stared, motionless, as Rosetta busied herselfโso much so that when Rosetta finally turned and their gazes met, Ivy still didnโt look away.
Katrina, noticing the scene, looked equally taken aback, then a smug satisfaction flickered across her face.
Well, what goes around comes around.
Rosetta was clearly flustered. Sheโd never imagined Ivy would catch her in such a humbling position, bending over backwards to please customers. No matter how good or bad their relationship was, being seen like this by her own daughter was unbearably humiliating.
An awkward silence blanketed the boutique. Even the sales associates on the side looked mortified, practically curling their toes in embarrassment for Rosetta.
But Mrs. Burke, who never missed a chance to stir the pot, watched with gleaming eyes and piped up, โMrs. Windsor, since youโve run into your eldest daughter, why not just ask her directly? The project payment is only two millionโsurely thatโs pocket change for Mr. Jamison.โ
Rosetta snapped out of her daze, her face going pale as she quickly straightened up. โIvy, youโฆ youโre here shopping for clothes too?โ
Ivyโs expression was unreadable. โHas the Windsor family come to this? Is the lady of the house now working retail to make ends meet?โ
She made no effort to save face for the Windsorsโon the contrary, her words were sharp and cutting in front of everyone.
Rosettaโs face froze, her humiliation deepening.
Mrs. Burke let out a peal of laughter, her tone dripping with disapproval. โMiss Ivy, thatโs too much. After all, sheโs your motherโshe gave you life, raised you. And now that youโve married up, you wonโt even acknowledge your own mother? Arenโt you afraid of tempting fate?โ
It was obvious Mrs. Burke wasnโt standing up for Rosetta. She was trying to guilt-trip Ivy, to force her hand and make her foot the bill for the Windsor familyโso she could get her money back sooner.
Everyone had heard the rumors: the Windsors were on the brink of bankruptcy. If they really went under, Mrs. Burkeโs project payment would be lost for good.
Ivy turned her cool gaze on the outspoken woman.
Since Ivy was standing while Mrs. Burke sat trying on shoes, Ivyโs eyes naturally looked down on her.
โSo youโre Mrs. Burke? Funny, I couldโve sworn I just heard you say it was the Windsors who kicked me out of the house. Now youโve done a quick turnaround, speaking up for them?โ
โGuilt trips wonโt work on me. The Windsors owe you money, not me. Whether itโs two million or two dollars, I donโt have it.โ
Mrs. Burkeโs composure cracked. โYou married Mr. Jamisonโhow could you not have money? The Ludwigs are worth billions. Even if Mr. Jamison never inherits the family fortune, heโs got to be worth tens of millions by himself.โ
โTens of millions?โ Ivy arched a brow, her voice suddenly soft and lilting. โYou really underestimate himโฆโ
Katrina shot her a lookโwhat did that mean?
Mrs. Burkeโs eyes lit up, thinking Ivy was about to change her mind. She smiled eagerly, โIf Mr. Jamison is so wealthy, and heโs so good to you-โ
But Ivy cut her off, her tone light but cold, โEven if he had a fortune of billions, he wouldnโt waste a penny bailing out the Windsors.โ
The hope in Mrs. Burkeโs eyes was snuffed out in an instant. She sneered, โHmph! More like he wonโt spend a dime on you.โ
Ivy raised her brows, feigning innocence. โExactly! You understand perfectlyโso why are you pressuring me? Actually, Iโm a bit strapped for cash myself these days. Maybe youโd like to lend me something, Mrs. Burke? Call it a charitable act.โ
She smiled, but there was no warmth in it.
Katrina couldnโt hold back a laugh, her shoulders shaking.
Realizing sheโd been played, Mrs. Burkeโs face darkened. She shot to her feet and snapped, โIvy, are you out of your mind? You have the nerve to ask me for money?โ Ivyโs smile remained icy. โWell, youโre asking me for moneyโso whereโs your shame?โ
โYou-โ Mrs. Burke was practically purple with rage and lurched forward, ready to lash out. But sheโd only managed to get one foot into her high heel while the other was still bare; as she tried to step forward, she lost her balance and pitched face-first toward the floor.
โAh! Mrs. Burke-!โ
โCareful!โ
Rosetta and the two sales associates rushed to catch her, but they were a second too late.
Watching the heavyset woman sprawled on the floor, Ivyโs smile grew even sweeter. โNo need to bow to me, Mrs. Burke.โ
With that, she turned and strolled out, utterly unbothered.
โIvy! You just wait!โ Mrs. Burke screamed from the floor, pounding it with her fist.
When Ivy was gone, Mrs. Burke rounded on Rosetta. โNone of you Windsors are worth a damn! Iโm telling you, if the payment isnโt in my account in three days, expect a summons from the court!โ
Rosetta, helping Mrs. Burke up, pleaded in a whisper, โPlease, donโt sue. If our assets are frozen, the Windsor family will be finishedโฆโ
โI donโt care! You Windsors have gone too far!โ
Out on the street, Ivy could still hear Mrs. Burkeโs shrill tirade behind her. A cold, amused smile flickered across her striking features.
Katrina looked at her, frowning slightly. โYouโre deliberately making enemies for the Windsors. Sure, itโs satisfying, but youโre giving yourself a bad reputation. Soon everyone will be saying that Dr. Ludwig wonโt give you a penny, and youโre a Windsor in name only.โ
Ivy smiled faintly, utterly unconcerned. โThatโs exactly what I want.โ
