Chapter 498

โ€œThisโ€ฆ Iโ€™m the one who gave birth to you. What does that so-called priest have to do with anything?โ€ Rosetta was so stunned she could barely get the words out. โ€œIvy, your father and Iโ€”weโ€™re your parents! You owe us your very existence. Even if weโ€™ve let you down, you canโ€™t just turn your back on us. Itโ€™sโ€”itโ€™s practically a sin!โ€

Ivyโ€™s patience had worn thin. Her voice was colder than ever. โ€œIf there really were a God that punished evil, youโ€™d have been struck down the moment you forgot me, threw me out, and abandoned me. The fact youโ€™re still standing here says enough.โ€ So why should she be the one to face judgment now?

Rosetta fell silent, her expression crumpling as she looked helplessly at Adkins, who sat slumped on the couch. He looked equally lost.

Without another word, Ivy turned away and crossed back to the sofa. โ€œYou should leave. I donโ€™t want to see either of you again.โ€

โ€œButโ€ฆ what about the company?โ€ Rosettaโ€™s eyes pleaded with her daughter. After a pause, she mustered up the last bit of courage. โ€œYouโ€™re still in school, you canโ€™t possibly run a company. Whyโ€”why not justโ€”โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t worry. I donโ€™t want the company anymore.โ€ Ivyโ€™s voice was suddenly nonchalant.

Jamison turned in surprise. โ€œIvyโ€”โ€

โ€œItโ€™s just an empty shell now. Even if I took it, itโ€™d be nothing but trouble. Take it backโ€”call it repayment for raising me. But from now on, weโ€™re done. Donโ€™t ever come looking for me again.โ€

Adkins stood up, shamelessly spitting out, โ€œThereโ€™s no law that severs the bond between father and daughter. When weโ€™re old and sick, youโ€™ll still have to take care of us, or Iโ€™ll take you to court!โ€

Their cruelty had long since numbed Ivy. She shot back without hesitation, โ€œIf youโ€™re going to force my hand, then maybe Iโ€™ll just sell the company out from under you.โ€

โ€œNo! Ivy, your fatherโ€™s just upset, pay him no mind.โ€ Rosetta rushed to smooth things over, forcing a conciliatory smile. โ€œWeโ€™re still young, we wonโ€™t burden you in the future. Just let us keep the companyโ€”thank you, darling, for not leaving us with nothing.โ€

At that moment, Baillieโ€”whoโ€™d been sitting on the floor nursing a bloody lipโ€”scrambled to her feet and shouted, โ€œMom, are you out of your mind? Sheโ€™s already ruined the company! Her shares are second only to Dadโ€™sโ€”doesnโ€™t that mean weโ€™ll all be working for her now? Unless we can buy back her shares, weโ€™re finished!โ€

Ivy took a sip of water and smiled faintly. โ€œDonโ€™t worry, I doubt youโ€™ll get the chance to work for me. The way things are, even if I never lift a finger again, the company wonโ€™t last a week. Bankruptcy is just a matter of time.โ€

Adkinsโ€™ face turned ashen. โ€œIf you know that, why do this at all? If the company goes under, your shares will be worthless.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s just money. I donโ€™t care. My husband already saidโ€”making money is easy for me. But dragging you all down with me? Thatโ€™s worth more than any profit.โ€

She smiled as she spoke. Adkins was so furious he couldnโ€™t speak, his hand shaking as he pointed at her. โ€œYouโ€ฆ you ungrateful wretch! If Iโ€™d known youโ€™d turn out like this, Iโ€™d have smothered you in your crib!โ€

Sensing the warning signs of another heart attack, Jamison stepped in calmly. โ€œMrs. Windsor, you should get your husband to a hospital. Itโ€™s not worth risking his lifeโ€”thereโ€™s still plenty of time to sort things out. Staying alive is what matters most.โ€

Rosetta, panicked by Adkinsโ€™ worsening condition, hurriedly called for Baillie. โ€œQuick, help your father to the car!โ€

Boyd, catching Jamisonโ€™s glance, stepped forward to help, but Baillie shoved him aside. โ€œWe donโ€™t need your fake sympathy!โ€

Swallowing his frustration, Boyd simply went to open the door for them instead.

Rosetta and Baillie half-carried Adkins to the door. Just as they were leaving, Rosetta spun around, her face twisted with spite. โ€œYouโ€™ll get whatโ€™s coming to you, Ivy. Just wait and see!โ€

Ivy didnโ€™t flinch. โ€œIโ€™ll be waiting.โ€

When the last of them had gone, Jamison turned to Ivy and pulled her into a tight embrace.

โ€œIf you need to cry,โ€ he murmured, โ€œgo ahead. I wonโ€™t judge you.โ€

Ivy nestled quietly against his chest, comforted by the steady beat of his heart. โ€œIโ€™m not going to cryโ€ฆ just tired, thatโ€™s all,โ€ she whispered, her voice barely audible.

Jamison pressed a gentle kiss to her hair. โ€œThen letโ€™s skip school for today. Stay home, rest. Iโ€™ll drive you back in the morning.โ€

She shook her head against his chest. โ€œNoโ€ฆ Just let me stay like this for a while.โ€

Before he could answer, she nuzzled closer, wrapping her arms around his lean waist.

Jamison relished her quiet need for comfort and held her without another word, letting her heal in the safety of his arms.

After a long while, Ivy finally stirred, feeling a bit steadier. She pulled away, her composure restored.

โ€œItโ€™s getting late. I should head back to campusโ€”and you need to get to work at the hospital,โ€ she said briskly, as if nothing had ever happened.
