Chapter 53

Seeing what was about to happen, Rosetta immediately stood up to block her daughterโ€™s path.

โ€œWhat now? Didnโ€™t I just talk to you about this a couple of days ago?โ€ she chided. โ€œYou canโ€™t keep picking fights with him. Men need to be handled gentlyโ€“keep throwing tantrums, and youโ€™ll only push him away. Do you understand?โ€

Emma was quick-tempered and far too sensitive. Her motherโ€™s words made her pause and finally cool down a little.

Just then, Micah got out of the car and walked over, greeting Rosetta. She nodded in return, then turned directly to her future son-in-law.

โ€œSo, Micah, when are you planning to reschedule the engagement party?โ€

Micah froze for a second, glancing at Emma, clearly hesitant. Emma shot him a sharp, warning look, making her intentions painfully clear.

He had no choice but to hurry and reply, โ€œWhenever you and Mr. Windsor decide, Iโ€™m ready.โ€

That was exactly what Rosetta wanted to hear. She worried that her youngest daughterโ€™s dramatic streak would scare off such a catch sooner or later. The sooner they locked in the wedding, the better.

The Windsor familyโ€™s business had been on the decline these past few years. All their hopes now rested on this alliance with the Shepherds, praying it would bring the family back to its former glory.

โ€œAlright, I checked the calendar yesterdayโ€“this Saturday looks perfect,โ€ Rosetta said, glancing at the couple. โ€œHow does that sound to you both?โ€

Emma pouted in silence, but after a nudge from her motherโ€™s gaze, she finally nodded. โ€œSaturdayโ€™s fine.โ€

Micah could only agree. โ€œSureโ€ฆ Saturday it is.โ€

That evening, Micah stayed for dinner at the Windsorsโ€™ to iron out details for the engagement. With the ruby necklace broken, Micah made an impressive gesture, offering to buy Emma a new car.

Emma, whoโ€™d been sulking all night, suddenly brightened. She jumped at the offer. โ€œThereโ€™s a Bentley Iโ€™ve had my eye onโ€“about half a million. We can go test drive it tomorrow.โ€

Both Adkins and Baillie looked over in surprise. Even the cars they drove only cost around three hundred thousand. Yet Emma didnโ€™t hesitate to ask for something pricier.

The rest of the Windsor clan looked at Micah, their expressions a mixture of hope and awkwardness.

Micah hesitated, uncertain. โ€œHalf a millionโ€ฆ donโ€™t you think thatโ€™s a bit much? I think something around a hundred thousand is more than enough.โ€

โ€œYou lent my sister a hundred thousand without blinking, but now that weโ€™re engaged, youโ€™re being stingy about a car?โ€ Emmaโ€™s face fell instantly, her tone accusatory.

Micah gritted his teeth. To avoid another argument, he gave in. โ€œAlright, fineโ€“weโ€™ll go take a look tomorrow.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re the best, Micah.โ€ Emma beamed, immediately looping her arm through his, all smiles once again.

The other Windsors visibly relaxed, joining in with forced laughter and praise. โ€œNo one spoils you like Micah does. Youโ€™d better appreciate himโ€”there arenโ€™t many men like him left.โ€

Emma gazed at her fiancรฉ with mock sincerity. โ€œOf course, Micah and I are solid as a rock.โ€

After dinner, Micah glanced out the window several times, wondering why Ivy still hadnโ€™t come home.

โ€œMicah, what are you looking at?โ€ Emma noticed how distracted he was, concern coloring her voice.

โ€œOh, nothing. I should get goingโ€“need to tell my parents about the engagement date,โ€ Micah said quickly, careful not to mention anything about waiting for Ivy.

โ€œYouโ€™re right. Drive safe, okay?โ€

Once Micah had left, the Windsors gathered for a family meeting.

โ€œMom,โ€ Emma started, โ€œsince the engagement partyโ€™s on Saturday, shouldnโ€™t we ask Ivy to stay away for a while? Otherwise, whoโ€™d feel comfortable coming here as a guest?โ€

Emma had dreamed of getting Ivy out of the house for ages and seized every opportunity to bring it up.

Rosetta sighed, her brow creased in worry. โ€œThat depends on whether sheโ€™ll actually agree to it.โ€

Adkins suddenly spoke up. โ€œShe went to the station this morning and still isnโ€™t back?โ€

Rosetta answered, โ€œShe came back at noon. Edna said she grabbed her car keys and left again.โ€

Baillie frowned in confusion. โ€œSheโ€™s out all the timeโ€“what on earth is she doing? Donโ€™t tell me sheโ€™s actually mixed up in something shady.โ€

Adkinsโ€˜ face darkened, but he said nothing.
