Chapter 533

Jamisonโ€™s composure shattered the moment he heard those words, his voice rising in alarm. โ€œSomething this serious, and youโ€™re only telling me now? Where are you?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m at school, sitting in the little garden outside the library. Donโ€™t worryโ€“Iโ€™m perfectly safe.โ€

But Jamison was far from reassured. He spoke in a low, urgent tone. โ€œGo into the library. Stay somewhere crowded. Iโ€™m coming to get you right now.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not necessary. Everythingโ€™s been handled, you-โ€

โ€œWait for me!โ€

Before Ivy could protest, the call ended abruptly.

She let her phone drop into her lap and sighed, resignation flickering across her face.

Back at the hospital, Jamison wrapped up the call, quickly delegated his remaining cases to colleagues, and practically stormed out, leaving the staff bewildered in his wake.

โ€œWhat on earth happened?โ€ someone wondered aloud.

Another nurse chimed in, โ€œProfessor Ludwigโ€™s finally started acting human since he got married. Used to be all work, all the time.โ€

โ€œTrue. Honestly, itโ€™s more peaceful when heโ€™s not here.โ€

Someone else grinned. โ€œI hope he spends more time with his wife. God forbid he keeps burning the candle at both ends in the department.โ€

Celeste overheard the chatter, her tone cool and clipped as she interjected, โ€œDoctors are supposed to be on call, always ready. Thatโ€™s what earns our patientsโ€˜ trust. If you want an easy life, maybe medicine isnโ€™t the right path.โ€

A few colleagues glanced at her but didnโ€™t bother responding.

One, less intimidated, shot back, โ€œDr. Quinn, everyone deserves a life outside work. Wanting more family time doesnโ€™t mean weโ€™re not dedicated doctors.โ€

Celeste was left speechless, though inwardly, her resentment toward Ivy grew. She was convinced Ivy was a femme fatale, luring a onceโ€“promising, ambitious doctor into trading heroics for domesticity.

Meanwhile, Jamison was stuck in the usual crush of rushโ€“hour traffic, his nerves raw. He called Boyd, wanting to confirm the security detail heโ€™d arranged for Emma.

โ€œThe bodyguardโ€™s been on duty since you called yesterday,โ€ Boyd reported. โ€œEmmaโ€™s still at Sheridanโ€™s place. The Carters and their lawyers went over to see her todayโ€“theyโ€™re all probably scheming about how to get Sheridan out of trouble.โ€

Boyd paused, curiosity getting the better of him. โ€œUncle, whatโ€™s going on?โ€

Jamisonโ€™s voice was tight. โ€œEmma bribed Ivyโ€™s roommate. She tried to hurt Ivy.โ€

โ€œWhat? Sheโ€™s got that kind of reach? Even knows Ivyโ€™s roommate?โ€ Boyd sounded stunned.

โ€œMaybe itโ€™s not just her. Sheridanโ€™s got a hand in this tooโ€“Iโ€™ve crossed him before. He called me not long ago, tried to get a favor. I turned him down, and he lost itโ€“ranted about breaking off the engagement with Emma, refusing to be her fall guy anymore.โ€

โ€œWho knows why he didnโ€™t go through with itโ€“probably worked something out with her. So if heโ€™s helping Emma target me or Ivy, it makes sense.โ€

Jamisonโ€™s jaw tightened with regret. Heโ€™d been too careless. He should have been monitoring Sheridan as closely as heโ€™d watched Emma.

โ€œBoyd, see if you can find a decent apartment complex near Neo Haven University. Ivy canโ€™t stay in the dorms anymoreโ€“she needs to move out.โ€

โ€œGot it. Iโ€™ll check around right away.โ€

After hanging up, Jamison called Ivy again. He only relaxed when she told him she was inside the library. Still, he pressed on, weaving through traffic as fast as he could.

Late summer had slipped into fall, and the sun was setting earlier every day. By the time the city lights blinked on, Jamison finally pulled up outside the library.

Ivyโ€™s stomach was growling from hunger as she answered his call and slipped outside. Under the curious gazes of her classmates, she slid into the passenger seat.

Jamison turned to scrutinize her, searching her face for any sign of distress. โ€œAre you sure youโ€™re okay?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m fine! If something was wrong, I wouldโ€™ve called you ages ago.โ€ Sensing his anxiety, Ivy reached out to reassure him. โ€œCan we just get going? Everyoneโ€™s staring.โ€

โ€œAlright. Letโ€™s get dinner first.โ€

They found a quiet spot in a nearby restaurant and settled into a secluded booth.

โ€œNow tell me exactly what happened. Whereโ€™s your roommate? Did you call the police?โ€ Jamisonโ€™s questions tumbled out, one after another.

Ivy squeezed his hand, trying to calm him. โ€œTake a breath. Iโ€™m right in front of youโ€“no need to panic.โ€

She recounted everything Roberta had told her earlier that day, word for word.

When Jamison learned her roommate had tried to poison the water dispenser, his expression turned dark. โ€œThis is serious. We have to call the police.โ€
