Chapter 551

In the hospital room, the head nurse checked the elderly womanโ€™s blood pressure โ€“ twice, in fact โ€“ and both times, the numbers ran high.

โ€œMrs. Ludwig, did you take your medication this morning? Your blood pressure isnโ€™t looking great. If this keeps up, weโ€™ll have to keep you in the hospital again,โ€ the nurse said, her voice edged with concern.

Adela Ludwigโ€™s expression soured. She pulled out her phone and waved the nurse away. โ€œIโ€™m fine. Leave me alone for a moment. I just need to make a call.โ€

The nurse hesitated, but Adela grew even more impatient and had her butler escort the nurse out.

Slipping on her reading glasses, Adela dialed her youngest son, muttering under her breath, โ€œThey must think Iโ€™m senile โ€“ each one bolder than the lastโ€ฆโ€

Before she could finish grumbling, the call connected and Jamison Ludwigโ€™s voice came through, brisk and direct. โ€œMom, Iโ€™m here at the hospital. Iโ€™ll be upstairs in a minute. Are you still doing tests?โ€

โ€œJamison, youโ€“โ€ Adela was ready to let loose with all her grievances, but then she remembered what Celeste Quinn had told her earlier and hesitated.

Sheโ€™d just arrived at the hospital; if she started interrogating him now, itโ€™d be obvious someone inside had tipped her off. She didnโ€™t want to throw Dr. Quinn under the bus.

Not the right time to ask, she thought.

Swallowing her irritation, she found another target for her frustration. โ€œAm I still your mother or not? Youโ€™re never home, and now you canโ€™t even show your face when Iโ€™m sick in the hospital. They say a man forgets his mother when he gets married โ€“ seems itโ€™s true in your case.โ€

Jamison was in the elevator, unfazed by his motherโ€™s theatrics. He gave a lazy chuckle. โ€œDidnโ€™t you keep telling us to give you grandchildren? If Iโ€™m out trying to make that happen, now youโ€™re complaining about that too. What do you want me to do?โ€

Adela bristled, even more annoyed that her son had the nerve to bring up the one thing she was already upset about.

But she couldnโ€™t let on.

She huffed, and snapped, โ€œAre you out of your mind? If youโ€™re sick, what good does it do to chase after your wife?โ€

Jamison took it in stride. โ€œWhy not do both? Maybe Iโ€™ll get lucky and everything will work out.โ€

Adela was left speechless.

By the time Jamison arrived at the VIP suite, Adelaโ€™s frustration had only grown โ€“ just the sight of her son, so captivated by a woman who was clearly beneath him, made her blood boil. The lies, the deception โ€“ it was enough to make her see red all over again.

The head nurse, a little on edge herself, quickly reported, โ€œProfessor Ludwig, your motherโ€™s blood pressure is still elevated. Iโ€™ve checked it several times.โ€

Jamison knit his brow and turned to his mother. โ€œDid you take your meds?โ€

Adela ignored him, waving him off in irritation. โ€œGo on, get out. Youโ€™re the reason my blood pressureโ€™s up in the first place.โ€

Jamison could only stare, exasperated. โ€œItโ€™s barely morning. Whoโ€™s managed to upset you already?โ€

โ€œWho else but you? Go, go, go โ€“ I canโ€™t even stand to look at you,โ€ she snapped, waving him away.

Jamison had a surgery scheduled soon anyway and couldnโ€™t linger. He nodded, resigned. โ€œFine. Iโ€™ll get to work. Take your time with the tests.โ€ He gave the nurse a few instructions and left.

Heโ€™d barely closed the door when his phone rang.

He answered, โ€œHey, big brother.โ€

โ€œJamison, has Mom arrived at the hospital? Howโ€™s she doing?โ€ Thad Ludwig, away on a business trip, wanted an update on their motherโ€™s checkup.

Jamison said, โ€œShe just started the tests. No idea who riled her up this morning, but sheโ€™s been taking it out on me.โ€

Thad chuckled, โ€œProbably arguing with Dad again. You know how it is โ€“ once they get older, theyโ€™re like kids. Donโ€™t take it to heart.โ€

โ€œOf course. Iโ€™d never hold it against her,โ€ Jamison replied lightly. Both brothers were busy, so they kept it brief and hung up.

Back in his office, Jamison quickly changed into scrubs and headed for the OR.

Meanwhile, Celeste sat at her desk nearby. She saw Jamison change and walk out without so much as a glance her way. It was a relief, but left a faint pang of disappointment she couldnโ€™t name.

Adela Ludwig finished her checkup, but Jamison was still in surgery.

The head nurse took her vitals again โ€“ this time, her blood pressure had finally returned to normal.

โ€œAll the test results so far are fine, Mrs. Ludwig. There are two more heart exams, but weโ€™ll have those this afternoon and will update Professor Ludwig directly. Your blood pressureโ€™s normal again โ€“ this morningโ€™s spike was probably just from getting upset. Please, try not to let things get to you,โ€ the nurse advised, personally escorting Adela out.

While waiting for the elevator, they ran into Celeste.

โ€œMrs. Ludwig, finished with your tests?โ€ Celeste greeted her politely.

Adela had once thought about matchmaking her son with this lovely young woman, but now those thoughts only made her feel regret.

What a shame, she mused. If only she were part of our family.

โ€œYes, Iโ€™m done for today. Thank you for your help,โ€ Adela replied with polite reserve, keeping her true feelings to herself.

She might have entertained wild ideas, but she wasnโ€™t unreasonable. Her son was still married, after all; if he ever sought someone new, it would have to be after this marriage ended.

Jamison didnโ€™t get out of surgery until noon.

He called the house right away.

Danny, the housekeeper, answered. โ€œYour motherโ€™s back already โ€“ resting upstairs. Your sisterโ€™s there, keeping her company.โ€

Knowing his mother was in good hands, Jamison relaxed. But before he hung up, he added, โ€œTry not to let them bicker, okay? Youโ€™re both too old to still be bickering. She got so worked up this morning her blood pressure shot up โ€“ it scared the nurses half to death.โ€
