Chapter 561

But no matter how beautiful a face may be, time will eventually catch up with it. If a couple never has children, just spending day after day gazing at each other, even the deepest love will wear thin.

Adela Ludwigโ€™s displeasure was written all over her face.

Ivy noticed that the older woman had been staring at her in silence, her expression shiftingโ€”first a flash of approving surprise, then settling into a stern gravity. It only confirmed Ivyโ€™s suspicion: Adela knew something, and had called her here for an interrogation.

Well, at worst, theyโ€™d try to break her and Jamison up. Ivy steeled herselfโ€”she could ignore the coldness. Jamison had never insisted she cozy up to the Ludwig family anyway. If things were tense, so be it.

With that thought, Ivy felt a surprising calm settle over her. She smiled, taking the initiative. โ€œMom, howโ€™s your recovery coming along?โ€

The word โ€œMomโ€ snapped Adela from her drifting thoughts. She looked at her youngest daughter-in-law and replied coolly, โ€œI hear you donโ€™t even call your own mother anymore, yet you seem to say it to me so naturally.โ€

Ivyโ€™s smile faltered for a second, but she quickly composed herself. โ€œYouโ€™ve known about my relationship with the Windsor family for a long time, havenโ€™t you? Do you really think those kinds of parents are worth missing?โ€

โ€œThey still brought you into this world.โ€

โ€œYes, and when theyโ€™re old and sick and need care, Iโ€™ll fulfill my legal obligations as their daughter.โ€

She and Jamison had talked about this before.

Since blood ties couldnโ€™t be dissolved by law, she couldnโ€™t shirk her duty to support her parents. But whether she did so in comfort and luxury, or just met the bare minimum, that would depend entirely on her mood.

Adela looked at her, surprised. โ€œYou seem so delicate and gentle, but youโ€™re actually ruthless and decisive.โ€

Ivyโ€™s expression darkened. โ€œIf I werenโ€™t, Iโ€™d have been buried and forgotten by now.โ€

Adela said nothing more. She dropped her gaze to the food on the table. โ€œLetโ€™s eat.โ€

Eat?

Ivy was taken aback. Eat? She hadnโ€™t even gotten to the real reason she was here.

She didnโ€™t have the appetite. After a pause, she pressed on. โ€œYou didnโ€™t invite me here just for dinner, did you?โ€

The older woman had already picked up her fork, but at Ivyโ€™s words, she looked up. โ€œThey say youโ€™re clever. So tell meโ€”why do you think I asked you here?โ€

Ivyโ€™s heart skipped, but she steadied herself and spoke boldly. โ€œYouโ€™ve found out that Jamison lied about being infertile, havenโ€™t you? You know itโ€™s actually my problem. So you brought me here today to confront meโ€”and maybe to persuade me to leave.โ€

She was nervous after saying that. If sheโ€™d misjudged the situation, sheโ€™d have exposed herself and made things even harder for Jamison.

But to her luckโ€”and misfortuneโ€”sheโ€™d guessed right.

Adelaโ€™s expression betrayed her shock. She stared at Ivy for two long seconds, then gave a cold, mocking laugh. โ€œYou really are clever. I thought Jamison was only drawn to your looks.โ€

Ivy forced her heartbeat to steady and replied without missing a beat. โ€œYou underestimate your son.โ€

โ€œAnd what use is cleverness? If you canโ€™t have children, what do you have to offer? Jamison loves kidsโ€”youโ€™ve seen how he is with Hal. Heโ€™s blinded by love right now, says he doesnโ€™t care about having children, but give it three or five years. Once the novelty wears off, once heโ€™s tired, do you really think he wonโ€™t change his mind?โ€

Now that the truth was out, Adela spoke bluntly.

Ivy listened quietly, then asked directly, โ€œSo what do you want? Are you telling me to leave him?โ€

Her composure caught Adela off guard.

Sheโ€™d expected Ivy to be flustered and intimidated, but instead, the girlโ€”clearly at a disadvantageโ€”was calm and unruffled.

Annoyed, Adela shot back, โ€œWhat do you think? You werenโ€™t born into a family that matches ours, and now you canโ€™t even give him children. Do you really think you have the right to hold him back?โ€

Ivy nodded. โ€œYouโ€™re right.โ€

Adela was momentarily speechless.

โ€œBut right now, he hasnโ€™t grown tired of me. If I were to leave suddenly, it would devastate him. And if he found out it was because you forced me, wellโ€ฆโ€ Ivy looked at Adela, noticing her face growing stormy, and quickly changed tack. โ€œYou know your own son best. With his temperament, I doubt heโ€™d take it quietly.โ€

Adela huffed impatiently. โ€œCanโ€™t you just keep it from him? Say you donโ€™t love him anymore, or that youโ€™ve fallen for someone else.โ€

Ivy wasnโ€™t angryโ€”in fact, she smiled. โ€œMom, do you really think your son is that easy to fool? Where am I supposed to find someone in this city whoโ€™s better than him, who treats me the way he does? As long as I canโ€™t, heโ€™ll never believe Iโ€™d leave him for someone else.โ€

Adela was left momentarily speechless, caught off guard by Ivyโ€™s calm and logical responses.

Concerned for the womanโ€™s healthโ€”she was still recovering from major surgeryโ€”Ivy decided to soften the conversation a little.

โ€œMom, Iโ€™m not sure where you heard that I canโ€™t have childrenโ€”but thatโ€™s not entirely true.โ€

Adelaโ€™s gaze sharpened, and her voice lost some of its edge. โ€œWhat do you mean?โ€
