Chapter 563

Before she came, Ivy had braced herself for an ugly showdown. Sheโ€™d pictured Jamison dropping everything and rushing over, standing up to his mother for her sake, only to have the old woman so furious sheโ€™d end up back in the hospital. In the aftermath, Ivy would become public enemy number one in the Ludwig family.

Sheโ€™d prepared for the worst, but things had turned out surprisingly well.

The thought that sheโ€™d managed to hold her own against Adela Ludwigโ€“and secured three years of breathing room for herself and Jamisonโ€“left her in a genuinely buoyant mood.

There were still plenty of dishes left on the table; she picked up her fork and continued eating at a leisurely pace.

Her phone buzzedโ€“a FaceTime request.

She didnโ€™t even need to check the caller ID to know who it was.

She swiped to accept, and Jamisonโ€™s handsome, sharpโ€“featured face appeared on the screen, framed by his white doctorโ€™s coat.

Dr. Handsome, indeed.

โ€œAre you still eating?โ€ Jamison sounded worried. The moment he finished his shift and got back to his office, heโ€™d called her, ready to rush to her defenseโ€“only to find his wife calmly enjoying her meal.

Ivyโ€™s mouth was nearly full, her words muffled. โ€œYeahโ€ฆ Have you eaten yet?โ€

โ€œNot yet.โ€

โ€œThen go eat! You keep skipping meals, working lateโ€“one day youโ€™ll be old and balding, and I wonโ€™t want you anymore,โ€ she scolded him, teasing to lighten the mood.

But Jamison wasnโ€™t in the mood for jokes. He cut straight to the point, โ€œWhereโ€™s my mom? Is she still with you?โ€

โ€œNo, sheโ€™s already left.โ€

โ€œSo youโ€™re eating alone?โ€

โ€œMmโ€“hmm. The food hereโ€™s pretty good. Thereโ€™s still a ton leftโ€“Iโ€™d hate to waste it. Youโ€™ll have to bring me back here next time.โ€

Jamison couldnโ€™t help but laugh at her easyโ€“going attitude. โ€œDid you chase her off and then dig in by yourself?โ€

โ€œMy husband is really smartโ€“no wonder youโ€™re a medical prodigy,โ€ Ivy grinned.

Jamison rolled his eyes and got back on topic. โ€œSo, what did my mom want to talk to you about? Was it about my health?โ€

Ivy kept eating, her tone unhurried. โ€œNo, not that. She knows youโ€™ve been lying to her. She also knows itโ€™s my problemโ€“we canโ€™t have kids for now.โ€

โ€œWhat? She knows? Did she give you a hard time?โ€ Jamisonโ€™s anxiety spiked.

โ€œNo, I told her Iโ€™m actively getting treatment, and thereโ€™s still hope. I just asked her to take care of herself and wait for the day things change.โ€

Ivy didnโ€™t mention the threeโ€“year agreement. She was worried Jamison would lose his temper and go pick another fight with his mother.

Sheโ€™d suggested the threeโ€“year deadline herself. It was generous, and the fact that Adela had agreed was already a small miracle.

Jamison didnโ€™t fully buy it. โ€œShe really didnโ€™t pressure you to leave me? Or are you just pretending everythingโ€™s fine because youโ€™re afraid Iโ€™ll get upset?โ€

โ€œShe really didnโ€™t. Itโ€™s Fridayโ€“Iโ€™ll be home tonight. Why would I lie to you?โ€

Jamison, for the moment, believed her. But another problem surfacedโ€“who had spilled the secret?

โ€œHow did Mom find out, anyway? Could it have been your sisterโ€ฆโ€ Ivy was wondering the same thing, and didnโ€™t wait for him to finish.

That night, Carla Ludwig had overheard a conversation between Jamison and his brotherโ€“sheโ€™d realized Jamison was lying.

โ€œProbably. The day Mom went in for her checkโ€“up, Carla stopped by the house.โ€ Jamisonโ€™s first suspicion was Carla, and irritation flickered across his face.

Ivy caught his look and knew he was about to go confront someone. She tried to calm him down. โ€œJust let it go. She was bound to find out sooner or later. Now that itโ€™s out in the open, we donโ€™t have to keep lying.โ€

She really did feel lighter.

First, she no longer had to โ€œjinxโ€ her husband. Sometimes these things were hard to explainโ€“if she kept repeating that Jamison had fertility issues, what if she accidentally spoke it into reality?

Second, she could stop lyingโ€“no more mental gymnastics every time Adela questioned her. Deceiving someone that age never sat right with her.

Jamison didnโ€™t want her to worry. โ€œI get it,โ€ he said quietly.

Remembering his mother had left, he changed the subject. โ€œHow are you getting back to campus? Iโ€™ll have Boyd pick you up.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s okay. Iโ€™m going to stop by The Book Nook to pick up some textbooks, then Iโ€™ll just grab a cab.โ€

Jamison was about to say more, but a colleague entered with his lunch. Ivy heard and cut him off, โ€œGo eat! Donโ€™t worry about meโ€“Iโ€™m not a kid.โ€

Without waiting for his reply, she hung up the call.
