Chapter 563
Before she came, Ivy had braced herself for an ugly showdown. Sheโd pictured Jamison dropping everything and rushing over, standing up to his mother for her sake, only to have the old woman so furious sheโd end up back in the hospital. In the aftermath, Ivy would become public enemy number one in the Ludwig family.
Sheโd prepared for the worst, but things had turned out surprisingly well.
The thought that sheโd managed to hold her own against Adela Ludwigโand secured three years of breathing room for herself and Jamisonโleft her in a genuinely buoyant mood.
There were still plenty of dishes left on the table; she picked up her fork and continued eating at a leisurely pace.
Her phone buzzedโa FaceTime request.
She didnโt even need to check the caller ID to know who it was.
She swiped to accept, and Jamisonโs handsome, sharpโfeatured face appeared on the screen, framed by his white doctorโs coat.
Dr. Handsome, indeed.
โAre you still eating?โ Jamison sounded worried. The moment he finished his shift and got back to his office, heโd called her, ready to rush to her defenseโonly to find his wife calmly enjoying her meal.
Ivyโs mouth was nearly full, her words muffled. โYeahโฆ Have you eaten yet?โ
โNot yet.โ
โThen go eat! You keep skipping meals, working lateโone day youโll be old and balding, and I wonโt want you anymore,โ she scolded him, teasing to lighten the mood.
But Jamison wasnโt in the mood for jokes. He cut straight to the point, โWhereโs my mom? Is she still with you?โ
โNo, sheโs already left.โ
โSo youโre eating alone?โ
โMmโhmm. The food hereโs pretty good. Thereโs still a ton leftโIโd hate to waste it. Youโll have to bring me back here next time.โ
Jamison couldnโt help but laugh at her easyโgoing attitude. โDid you chase her off and then dig in by yourself?โ
โMy husband is really smartโno wonder youโre a medical prodigy,โ Ivy grinned.
Jamison rolled his eyes and got back on topic. โSo, what did my mom want to talk to you about? Was it about my health?โ
Ivy kept eating, her tone unhurried. โNo, not that. She knows youโve been lying to her. She also knows itโs my problemโwe canโt have kids for now.โ
โWhat? She knows? Did she give you a hard time?โ Jamisonโs anxiety spiked.
โNo, I told her Iโm actively getting treatment, and thereโs still hope. I just asked her to take care of herself and wait for the day things change.โ
Ivy didnโt mention the threeโyear agreement. She was worried Jamison would lose his temper and go pick another fight with his mother.
Sheโd suggested the threeโyear deadline herself. It was generous, and the fact that Adela had agreed was already a small miracle.
Jamison didnโt fully buy it. โShe really didnโt pressure you to leave me? Or are you just pretending everythingโs fine because youโre afraid Iโll get upset?โ
โShe really didnโt. Itโs FridayโIโll be home tonight. Why would I lie to you?โ
Jamison, for the moment, believed her. But another problem surfacedโwho had spilled the secret?
โHow did Mom find out, anyway? Could it have been your sisterโฆโ Ivy was wondering the same thing, and didnโt wait for him to finish.
That night, Carla Ludwig had overheard a conversation between Jamison and his brotherโsheโd realized Jamison was lying.
โProbably. The day Mom went in for her checkโup, Carla stopped by the house.โ Jamisonโs first suspicion was Carla, and irritation flickered across his face.
Ivy caught his look and knew he was about to go confront someone. She tried to calm him down. โJust let it go. She was bound to find out sooner or later. Now that itโs out in the open, we donโt have to keep lying.โ
She really did feel lighter.
First, she no longer had to โjinxโ her husband. Sometimes these things were hard to explainโif she kept repeating that Jamison had fertility issues, what if she accidentally spoke it into reality?
Second, she could stop lyingโno more mental gymnastics every time Adela questioned her. Deceiving someone that age never sat right with her.
Jamison didnโt want her to worry. โI get it,โ he said quietly.
Remembering his mother had left, he changed the subject. โHow are you getting back to campus? Iโll have Boyd pick you up.โ
โThatโs okay. Iโm going to stop by The Book Nook to pick up some textbooks, then Iโll just grab a cab.โ
Jamison was about to say more, but a colleague entered with his lunch. Ivy heard and cut him off, โGo eat! Donโt worry about meโIโm not a kid.โ
Without waiting for his reply, she hung up the call.
