Chapter 634
Jamison asked, โSo is she staying in the hospital, or did she leave?โ
โSheโs still here. Insisted on being admitted, actually. And she demanded we use the best medication to prevent a miscarriageโbut Dr. Ludwig, she hasnโt paid her medical bills, and sheโs HIV positive. This is a real headache!โ
The OBโGYN muttered under her breath, clearly unhappy about having this problem dropped in her lap by Jamison.
โShe has family. Tell her to contact them and have someone come pay the bill. If she refuses, call the police.โ Jamisonโs tone was cold and firm.
โUnderstood.โ The doctor had only grumbled because she didnโt know what this patientโs connection to Jamison was. Now, hearing his clipped, authoritative response, she finally relaxed.
After hanging up, Jamison changed out of his white coat and headed home.
By then, the bodyguards Boyd Ludwig had arranged were already stationed at Ivyโs side.
Jamison wanted them to keep a low profile, worried Ivy would be uncomfortable being followed around like some celebrity. But Ivy was more practical than heโd given her credit for: she asked Boyd for the guardsโ contact info, called them herself, and told them to stick close and help her carry her things.
When Jamison arrived at the restaurant to meet his wife for dinner, he was momentarily taken aback by the sight of two hulking men seated at her table. For a split second, the scene reminded him of one of those wealthy women who keep young male companionsโa mental image that immediately called to mind Baillie Windsorโs notorious benefactress.
Ivy explained, โIt was my idea. Itโs easier if they just stick with me. But when weโre on campus, I told them to ditch the black suits and sunglasses. They look too much like mobstersโso I just bought them a couple sets of tracksuits. From now on, theyโll blend in as college guys.โ
That way, sheโd finally get some peace from all the guys at school hitting on her.
Jamison couldnโt help but laugh and shake his head. He sat down, eyeing his wifeโthis situation was justโฆ impossible to judge! On the one hand, it was dief [original text was unreadable], on the other, he couldnโt help but feel a stab of jealousy.
After Ivy finished speaking, the two bodyguards picked up on Jamisonโs mood and immediately stood up to bow politely. โMr. Ludwig, Mrs. Ludwig, please enjoy your meal. Weโll be nearby if you need us.โ
As they left, one of them turned back and bowed again. โThank you for your generosity today, maโam.โ
Ivy waved it off. โDonโt mention it. Just take the clothes with you.โ
โThank you, maโam.โ
They gathered the shopping bags from the chairs and relocated them to a table behind.
Jamison shook his head again, finally unable to resist a playful jab. โI never thought Iโd see the day you bought clothes for other menโespecially men who spend more time with you than your actual husband.โ
Ivy grinned. โIf it really bothers you, just send them away.โ
โNo way. Theyโre sticking with you, whether I like it or not. Emma and the Carters are both loose cannonsโฆโ Even while sulking, Jamison knew better than to risk her safety.
Ivy knew he was just talking tough. In reality, he was a hundred times more anxious about her than heโd ever admit. She chuckled and offered him a bit of flattery, โRelaxโthere isnโt a man in this whole city who could hold a candle to you. Iโm not about to go looking elsewhere.โ
Jamison raised an eyebrow. โSo, whatโyouโd only consider it if you found someone better outside the city?โ
Ivy rolled her eyes and tossed the menu at him. โJust order dinner already, Iโm starving!โ
He laughed, slid into the seat beside her, and leaned in to kiss her before finally turning to the menu.
Ivy, still distracted by thoughts of Emma, asked about her. Jamison relayed the OBโGYNโs report.
โItโs honestly bizarre,โ Ivy muttered. โEmma acts like sheโs trying to lose that baby every day, yet somehow, itโs hanging on for dear life.โ She couldnโt help but feel a pang of envy.
She wished she could get pregnant herself, but her chances were slim.
Meanwhile, Emma kept getting pregnant by accident. Sheโd lost Micahโs baby last time, and barely three months later, she was expecting again.
With the way Emmaโs life had been falling apart latelyโnot to mention all the abuse sheโd been taking from SheridanโIvy had assumed this pregnancy wouldnโt last either. But against all odds, the child was still there, stubborn as ever.
