Chapter 698
Ivy knew Jamison was still at work, and she didnโt want to disturb him. Lying back on the hospital bed, she said coldly, โGo on, do what you need to. Iโm tired.โ
Jamison stood there, his face stormy, glancing at his wife several times as if he wanted to say something but held back. In the end, he left the room without another word.
Once the door closed, Ivy rolled over to stare at the ceiling, quietly fuming.
She understoodโnobodyโs perfect. Even the best partner canโt agree with you on everything. But when it came to her career, the thing she cared most about, Jamison always seemed to be on a different page. That was what truly frustrated her.
Maybe Edmond really did have feelings for her. But even if she changed jobs for something more stable, would that really solve anything?
Wherever people gather, thereโs always dramaโpetty conflicts, power plays, messes of all kinds.
Itโs the same in every field.
The real challenge isnโt about avoiding certain circles, but about keeping your own hands cleanโstaying true to yourself even when things around you get ugly.
She decided to cool off for now, and maybe give Jamison some time to really think things through.
But Dr. Ludwig clearly had other plans.
At lunchtime, Jamison came back.
He was carrying a massive bouquet of tulipsโbigger and more beautifully wrapped than the one Edmond had sent.
โYou like flowers, right? Iโll bring you some every day from now on,โ he said, holding the bouquet out to her.
Ivy glanced at the flowers, unimpressed.
Was this really what their argument this morning had been aboutโflowers?
He was dodging the real issue, and it was painfully obvious he didnโt want to face it head-on.
โJust put them over there,โ she said, nodding toward a table.
โYou sure you donโt want to take a look? Theyโre beautiful.โ
โI can see them from here.โ
She answered every question, but her unhappiness was plain on her face.
Jamison noticed.
But after seeing Edmond today, and realizing that man had feelings for his wife, Jamison found it impossible to just ignore it all.
They ate together in silence.
Then Jamisonโs phone rang. It was a call from his department.
He finished the call and turned to Ivy. โI have to head back downstairs. Get some rest. Youโve got a few more tests this afternoon, and if Iโm free, Iโll come with you.โ
She was scheduled to be discharged tomorrow, but they needed to make sure she was fully recovered.
After all, sheโd lost an organโsheโd have to come back regularly for checkups.
Ivy almost told him not to bother, but she couldnโt bring herself to push him away completely. After a momentโs hesitation, she nodded.
But when it came time for her afternoon tests, Jamison didnโt show.
She figured he must have been caught up at work, so she didnโt call him. Instead, she had the nurseโs aide go with her.
Just as the last test was wrapping up, Jamison finally arrived, still in his scrubs, obviously just off the operating table.
โThere was a sudden emergency in surgery. I got delayed,โ he said, coming over and taking her hand, his voice low.
Ivy nodded, waiting for the doctor to finish putting away the equipment before she wiped off the gel and sat up.
โGo take care of your work, Iโve got this,โ she said, straightening her clothes and preparing to head back to her room.
Jamison watched her silently and walked beside her.
They didnโt speak on the way back. Once they reached the room, Jamison helped her into bed and tucked her in, but he didnโt leave right away.
Ivy looked at him. โWhatโs wrong? You should goโdonโt you have things to do?โ
Jamison let out a heavy sigh. Finally, he couldnโt hold it in anymore. โIvy, if youโre upset, just say so. Donโt just shut me out.โ
Ivy met his eyes and answered seriously, โIโm not really mad. Iโve just been cooped up in this hospital for too long. Itโs making me miserable; my moodโs not great.โ
โYouโll be home tomorrow,โ he reminded her.
โI know.โ She nodded and picked up a book by her bed. โGo on, get back to work. Iโll read for a bit and sleep when Iโm tired.โ
โAlright.โ
He said the words, but his expression stayed grim as he turned and left.
This was probably the first real fight theyโd had since getting married.
There had been no raised voices, no icy silent treatmentโjust this quiet, stubborn distance that neither seemed able to cross.
