Chapter 707
โJamison was speechless too. Iโm not that over the top, you know.โ
If he got jealous of every random stranger, heโd die of it.
โHa, you just donโt realize it.โ
They ordered their food, and the owner brought it over in no time. The weather was getting colder, and a bowl of hot soup warmed them right up. Ivy remembered running into Roberta earlier that day and brought it up casually.
Jamison took a sip of soup and nodded. โYou did the right thing. Once you give someone that money, you canโt take it back, or youโre still indebted to them. If she really refuses, just donate it to charityโitโs a good way to let it go.โ
โExactly. I hate owing people favors.โ
A lot of times, favors were more troublesome than money.
โShe said her ex is still bothering you? You never mentioned that before.โ Jamison glanced at her.
โIt was just that one time we bumped into each other on the street. Nothing since. Iโve got a bodyguard, remember? You can relax.โ
โGood.โ Jamisonโs expression softened. โMMAโs case is over, but Iโm honestly surprised youโre still letting the bodyguard stick around.โ
He knew Ivyโindependent, strong-willed, never one for being โwatchedโ all the time. Besides, having a male bodyguard shadow you around campus was bound to attract odd looks. Heโd even considered arranging protection behind her back if she refused outright, but to his surprise, sheโd agreed to it without fuss.
Ivy caught his meaning, toying with her spoon as she spoke with a hint of mischief. โI know you worry about me. Why start another fight over it? Anyway, Iโm under your nose every day lately. Youโre not worried Iโll run off with someone else, are you?โ
Jamison stopped mid-sip, frowning as he set his spoon down.
โIvy, itโs not that I donโt trust you.โ Realizing sheโd misunderstood, he hurried to explain. โSure, we got married on a whim, but I know you. Youโve got standards, youโre sharp. Men are just background noise to youโnever enough to slow you down.โ
โWell, arenโt you perceptive.โ Ivy flashed him a teasing smile. โSince youโre so understanding, when I start my internship next week, I donโt need a bodyguard on my heels, right? He can just drive me to and from workโwhat do you think?โ
Jamison studied his wife for a long moment, then gave a helpless chuckle.
โNo wonder Naylor Wilson calls you a โlotus-root siren.โ Youโve just laid a trap for your own husband.โ
Full circleโthe conversation landed right where she wanted it. If he disagreed now, heโd only be contradicting everything heโd just said.
Ivy arched a brow. โNaylor really called me that?โ
โYeah. Regretting introducing your best friend to him yet?โ Jamison baited her with a grin.
But Ivy didnโt bite. She just shrugged, smiling lightly. โAs long as he treats Katrina well and theyโre happy together, I donโt care how he talks about me. Iโm not the one dating him.โ
Jamison paused, quietly amazed at how clearheaded this woman was.
Seeing him yield, Ivy pressed her point. โSo itโs settled. When I start my internship, the bodyguard just drives meโno tailing me everywhere.โ
โAlright. But if anything happens, call me or the driver. Donโt do anything reckless. That fall you took last time gave me nightmares for weeksโI canโt go through that again. If youโre safe, Iโm safe.โ
Something in those words hit Ivy unexpectedly. She waved over the waiter for the check, then shot Dr. Ludwig a playful wink. โDinnerโs on me tonightโto soothe your wounded heart.โ
โHah, if Iโd known that, I wouldโve ordered more.โ
With their hunger satisfied, the two of them strolled hand in hand through the campus.
