Listen to this chapter:

Bob shrieked, starry-eyed, โ€œOh my god! Dale said earlier that Dr. Ludwig is super tallโ€“like, at least six-foot-three. I didnโ€™t believe him!โ€

โ€œAnd Mrs. Smith, youโ€™re so tiny and gorgeous! You donโ€™t look anything like your screen name. I pictured someone totally different!โ€

Bobโ€™s real name was Sophia. Despite the nickname, she was a woman in her early thirties who ran a cozy little coffee shop down in Montclairโ€“a spot that had become a minor social media sensation in the area.

Sheโ€™d just turned thirty, never married, no kids, and not even a whisper of a relationship.

But watching Jamison and Ivy standing togetherโ€“such a perfect-looking coupleโ€“she found herself suddenly daydreaming about love.

Dale Sullivan had arrived first and already blended right in with everyone.

After Sophia finished gushing, Dale stepped forward, friendly as ever. โ€œHey there, Mrs. Smithโ€“I mean, Ivy. Iโ€™m Dale Sullivan, just Dale from the group chat.โ€

โ€œDale, donโ€™t call her Mrs. Smith! Youโ€™re making her sound ancient,โ€ Sophia teased, grinning.

Before Dale could explain, the rest of the group chimed in with introductions.

โ€œIโ€™m Jayโ€“yep, real nameโ€™s Jay. Iโ€™m the bandโ€™s lead singer.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m Coach Murphyโ€“real name, Scales Murphy. Dale and I have already grabbed dinner together before, so we go way back.โ€

Jamison waited for everyone to finish, then nodded and spoke up. โ€œIโ€™m Dr. Handsomeโ€“Jamison, as you probably know. And this is my wife, Ivyโ€“sheโ€™s our Mrs. Smith from the group.โ€

Ivy gave a polite nod. โ€œHi, everyone. Just call me Ivy, no need for the โ€˜Mrs. Smithโ€™ stuff. Thank you all for coming all this way to see me.โ€

โ€œIvy, how old are you anyway? You look like you just walked out of college!โ€ Sophia was still hung up on the age thing.

Jamison, ever the gentleman, pulled out a chair for his wife and gave her a reassuring tap.

Ivy didnโ€™t even have to look to know what he meant. She sat down, gracefully, smiling. โ€œWell, I actually am in collegeโ€“sort of. I lost three years, so I still havenโ€™t finished my undergrad. Iโ€™m back to finish my degree now. As for my ageโ€“Iโ€™ll be twenty-four soon, so Iโ€™m not that young, right?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re the baby of the group!โ€ Sophia laughed, eyes sparkling. โ€œSeriously, youโ€™re the prettiest girl Iโ€™ve ever met in real life. No wonder Dr. Ludwig only has eyes for you.โ€

Ivy blushed under the compliments and glanced at Jamison. Their eyes met, and both of them were smiling.

The dinner began, with Dale Sullivan taking charge as an impromptu host.

โ€œDr. Ludwig, you and Ivy kept your secret from us for ages. Time to pay upโ€“three drinks as a penalty!โ€

Normally, Jamison barely touched alcoholโ€“a self-imposed rule for a surgeon. But tonight, he knew there was no getting out of it.

He agreed easily, โ€œYouโ€™re right, I owe you. But Ivyโ€™s sitting this outโ€“doctorโ€™s orders.โ€

โ€œShe can use tea instead,โ€ someone suggested.

So the two of them stood up, Jamison downing three drinks in quick succession while Ivy gamely emptied three cups of tea.

โ€œHappy now?โ€ Jamison flipped his empty glass upside-down to prove his sincerity.

โ€œAlright, alright, youโ€™re a good sport!โ€

As they sat back down, Ivy leaned in and whispered, โ€œAre you sure you wonโ€™t get drunk?โ€

Jamison replied quietly, โ€œDonโ€™t worry, I know my limits.โ€

He sounded confident, but Ivy wasnโ€™t convinced.

Their little tรชte-ร -tรชte didnโ€™t go unnoticed; the rest of the group immediately started teasing.

โ€œDr. Ludwig, you and Ivy have all the time in the world to whisper to each other at home. Tonight, youโ€™re stuck with us!โ€

โ€œYeah, no flirting tonightโ€“you two have to hang out with us!โ€

Embarrassed, Ivy sat up straighter.

As the waiter continued bringing out dishes, Ivy remembered her own situation and quickly reminded everyone, โ€œDonโ€™t forget to use serving utensils tonight. Iโ€™ve taken medication to block infection, so the risk is really low, but letโ€™s still be careful, Iโ€™d hate for any of you to be at risk because of a careless mistake.โ€

Theyโ€™d all discussed this in the group chat before, but Ivy wanted to make sure.

Her words brought a slight hush over the table.

Jamison jumped in, reassuring, โ€œIvyโ€™s already had the most accurate HIV test availableโ€“sheโ€™s clear. Sheโ€™ll be tested again at three and six months, just to be absolutely safe. So, really, itโ€™s just a precaution.โ€

Dale responded immediately, โ€œOf course. Ivyโ€™s just being responsible. Weโ€™ll all use the serving spoons.โ€

The mood quickly lightened again, and soon everyone was raising their glasses to Jamison.

โ€œSo, are we the official witnesses to your love story or what? Some of us even played matchmaker! Dr. Ludwig, you definitely owe us a big thank-you tonight!โ€

Everyone knew Jamison came from a prestigious background, but since most of them werenโ€™t part of that world, there was no need for stiff formality. The conversation stayed relaxed and easy.

Jamison, usually reserved, was much more outgoing around these friends he shared with Ivy.

Coach Murphy called for a round in his honor, and Jamison obliged, working his way around the table. By the end, his cheeks were flushed from the drinks.

Ivy watched with concern and whispered for him to slow down, but Jamison leaned closer, warm breath tickling her cheek, eyes bright with laughter. โ€œRelax. If I get drunk, youโ€™ll just have to take care of me.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know the first thing about looking after a drunk!โ€ Ivy protested.

He grinned. โ€œNo worries. Iโ€™m a happy drunk. Just help me home and put me to bed.โ€ Ivy could only sigh.

After watching him show off on the basketball court, tonight she was seeing another side of Jamisonโ€“uninhibited and lively after a few drinks.

The group got rowdier as the night went on, egging the couple on to drink a โ€œwedding toastโ€โ€“a sort of rehearsal for the real thing.

Ivy was mortified, but Jamison, loosened up by the alcohol, looked like a whole new man.

โ€œCome on, letโ€™s do it. You can use tea,โ€ he said, pouring himself another drink and turning to Ivy with a grin.
