Chapter 72
Ivy gave a crooked smile. โYeah, things are going great for you now. But how long do you think thatโll last?โ
Emmaโs face stiffened. โWhatโs that supposed to mean?โ
โThe police already have a lead. It wonโt be long before the people who trafficked me are arrested. If I were you, Iโd turn myself in now and hope for a lighter sentence.โ
Ivy watched Emma closely, a half-smile playing on her lips, as she waited for her reaction.
Emmaโs expression flashed with panic, but she quickly forced a friendly smile. โSis, I have no idea what youโre talking about. Youโve misunderstood me so deeply, but itโs fine; I wonโt hold it against you. After all, youโve suffered so much these past three years โ itโs understandable if youโre not thinking straight.โ
Ivy hadnโt expected her to stay this composed, and she let out a short laugh. โEmma, you never fail to surprise me.โ
Emma flashed a defiant grin and was just about to retort when she caught a glimpse of someone stepping out of the house.
Thinking fast, she hurried forward and grabbed Ivyโs hand, her expression instantly transforming. โIvy, I know you canโt let go of Micah, but Iโm pregnant with his child now, Iโโ
โWhat? Youโre pregnant?โ Ivy stared at her in shock, her gaze instinctively dropping to Emmaโs stomach, then to the high heels on her feet.
Pregnant, and still wearing stilettos?
โYes. I just found out yesterday. Micahโs over the moon, and so are Mom and Dad.โ
Seizing Ivyโs hand, Emma continued her pitiful plea, โSo please, Ivy, I canโt lose Micah. My baby needs a father. Iโm begging youโdonโt take Micah from meโฆโ
Ivy watched Emma suddenly switch to the damsel-in-distress routine and step closer, and she knew right away Emma was up to something. She quickly shook off Emmaโs grip.
But Emma lunged after her, and, as if right on cue, her ankle twisted in those heels. She let out a dramatic cry and collapsed onto the ground.
โEmma!โ Micah rushed over, lifting her up in a panic. โEmma, are you hurt? Did you fall badly?โ
โIโm okay,โ Emma whimpered, clutching Micahโs arm and laying it on a bit too thick. โDonโt blame Ivyโit wasnโt her fault.โ
Ivy stood back, arms crossed, seeing straight through Emmaโs little act.
She let out a cold laugh. โEmma, I just said you surprised me, but I didnโt expect youโd pull such a cheap trick so fast.โ
โI didnโt!โ Emmaโs eyes welled with tears as she pleaded helplessly. โYou pushed me, I know you did! Youโre just jealous Iโm having Micahโs babyโyou want me to lose itโฆโ
Micahโs face darkened. โIvy, Iโm the one who wronged you. If youโre angry, take it out on me. Donโt target Emma. Sheโs pregnantโshe canโt be put at risk.โ
Ivy sneered, her voice full of contempt. โMicah, are you really not worried about having a child with someone like her? Donโt you think youโre tempting fate?โ
โIvy! How could you curse an unborn baby like that?โ Micah snapped, his anger flaring.
Before Ivy could reply, Emma let out a feeble moan, bending over and clutching her stomach. โMicah, my belly hurtsโฆIt mustโve been the fallโฆโ
Micahโs nerves instantly went on edge. โWhat should I do? Iโll get you to the hospital!โ
โNo, just carry me inside to restโฆ hurryโฆโ
Without another word, Micah scooped Emma into his arms and hurried back inside.
Emma clung to his neck, shooting a triumphant look over his shoulder at Ivyโher message clear: See? Micah still cares about me. Youโll never win.
Tch.
Ivy watched the scene unfold, so unimpressed she couldnโt even be bothered to scoff. She headed for the house.
But as soon as she walked in, Rosetta rounded on her, voice sharp with accusation. โIvy, Emmaโs carrying a Shepherd child! If anything happens to her, how will we answer to the Shepherds? From now on, youโre forbidden from laying a hand on Emma!โ
Adkins glared at her, his fury barely contained. โDonโt wait for โfrom now on.โ Youโre leaving today! Baillie! Goโthrow all her things out!โ
