Chapter 72

Ivy gave a crooked smile. โ€œYeah, things are going great for you now. But how long do you think thatโ€™ll last?โ€

Emmaโ€™s face stiffened. โ€œWhatโ€™s that supposed to mean?โ€

โ€œThe police already have a lead. It wonโ€™t be long before the people who trafficked me are arrested. If I were you, Iโ€™d turn myself in now and hope for a lighter sentence.โ€

Ivy watched Emma closely, a half-smile playing on her lips, as she waited for her reaction.

Emmaโ€™s expression flashed with panic, but she quickly forced a friendly smile. โ€œSis, I have no idea what youโ€™re talking about. Youโ€™ve misunderstood me so deeply, but itโ€™s fine; I wonโ€™t hold it against you. After all, youโ€™ve suffered so much these past three years โ€“ itโ€™s understandable if youโ€™re not thinking straight.โ€

Ivy hadnโ€™t expected her to stay this composed, and she let out a short laugh. โ€œEmma, you never fail to surprise me.โ€

Emma flashed a defiant grin and was just about to retort when she caught a glimpse of someone stepping out of the house.

Thinking fast, she hurried forward and grabbed Ivyโ€™s hand, her expression instantly transforming. โ€œIvy, I know you canโ€™t let go of Micah, but Iโ€™m pregnant with his child now, Iโ€“โ€

โ€œWhat? Youโ€™re pregnant?โ€ Ivy stared at her in shock, her gaze instinctively dropping to Emmaโ€™s stomach, then to the high heels on her feet.

Pregnant, and still wearing stilettos?

โ€œYes. I just found out yesterday. Micahโ€™s over the moon, and so are Mom and Dad.โ€

Seizing Ivyโ€™s hand, Emma continued her pitiful plea, โ€œSo please, Ivy, I canโ€™t lose Micah. My baby needs a father. Iโ€™m begging youโ€“donโ€™t take Micah from meโ€ฆโ€

Ivy watched Emma suddenly switch to the damsel-in-distress routine and step closer, and she knew right away Emma was up to something. She quickly shook off Emmaโ€™s grip.

But Emma lunged after her, and, as if right on cue, her ankle twisted in those heels. She let out a dramatic cry and collapsed onto the ground.

โ€œEmma!โ€ Micah rushed over, lifting her up in a panic. โ€œEmma, are you hurt? Did you fall badly?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m okay,โ€ Emma whimpered, clutching Micahโ€™s arm and laying it on a bit too thick. โ€œDonโ€™t blame Ivyโ€“it wasnโ€™t her fault.โ€

Ivy stood back, arms crossed, seeing straight through Emmaโ€™s little act.

She let out a cold laugh. โ€œEmma, I just said you surprised me, but I didnโ€™t expect youโ€™d pull such a cheap trick so fast.โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t!โ€ Emmaโ€™s eyes welled with tears as she pleaded helplessly. โ€œYou pushed me, I know you did! Youโ€™re just jealous Iโ€™m having Micahโ€™s babyโ€“you want me to lose itโ€ฆโ€

Micahโ€™s face darkened. โ€œIvy, Iโ€™m the one who wronged you. If youโ€™re angry, take it out on me. Donโ€™t target Emma. Sheโ€™s pregnantโ€“she canโ€™t be put at risk.โ€

Ivy sneered, her voice full of contempt. โ€œMicah, are you really not worried about having a child with someone like her? Donโ€™t you think youโ€™re tempting fate?โ€

โ€œIvy! How could you curse an unborn baby like that?โ€ Micah snapped, his anger flaring.

Before Ivy could reply, Emma let out a feeble moan, bending over and clutching her stomach. โ€œMicah, my belly hurtsโ€ฆIt mustโ€™ve been the fallโ€ฆโ€

Micahโ€™s nerves instantly went on edge. โ€œWhat should I do? Iโ€™ll get you to the hospital!โ€

โ€œNo, just carry me inside to restโ€ฆ hurryโ€ฆโ€

Without another word, Micah scooped Emma into his arms and hurried back inside.

Emma clung to his neck, shooting a triumphant look over his shoulder at Ivyโ€“her message clear: See? Micah still cares about me. Youโ€™ll never win.

Tch.

Ivy watched the scene unfold, so unimpressed she couldnโ€™t even be bothered to scoff. She headed for the house.

But as soon as she walked in, Rosetta rounded on her, voice sharp with accusation. โ€œIvy, Emmaโ€™s carrying a Shepherd child! If anything happens to her, how will we answer to the Shepherds? From now on, youโ€™re forbidden from laying a hand on Emma!โ€

Adkins glared at her, his fury barely contained. โ€œDonโ€™t wait for โ€˜from now on.โ€™ Youโ€™re leaving today! Baillie! Goโ€“throw all her things out!โ€
