Chapter 164

"Let's see if we can climb out,โ€ Winifred said, glancing around to check their surroundings.

Amber shook her head. โ€œItโ€™s way too deep and slippery, and itโ€™s still raining. Thereโ€™s no way weโ€™re getting out of here.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t bother trying. Youโ€™re not getting out of here โ€“ just wait here to die. Soon, youโ€™ll hear a loud boom, and thatโ€™ll be Sienna dying before you.โ€ With a laugh, Jocelynโ€™s voice echoed from above, dripping with malice.

Winifred clenched her fists, furious. She dragged Sienna into this too? Why? Why did she have to pull her in? God damn Jocelyn Turner! she thought, her heart burning with anger.

โ€œSo, are you excited? Thrilled? Iโ€™m sending you three sisters to reunite in the underworld. Too bad Vivian slipped away and ran off abroad,โ€ Jocelyn taunted, her voice full of mockery.

Before Jocelyn could finish her crazed rant, Amber screamed again. There was a loud bang โ€“ Winifred raised her gun and shot Jocelyn right in the head as she poked her head out.

โ€œYouโ€ฆ you killed her!โ€ Amber stammered. She couldnโ€™t see what happened, but with Jocelynโ€™s voice suddenly gone, she knew for sure Jocelyn was dead.

Jocelyn had gambled everything, brazenly stealing money from the criminal underworld and hatching this insane plan. Even if she survived Winifred, there was no way sheโ€™d escape the mobโ€™s blade. And anyway, Sienna never intended for her to walk away alive.

โ€œIf I didnโ€™t kill her, what โ€“ wait around for her to kill you instead?โ€ Winifred retorted.

Winifredโ€™s words left Amber completely at a loss. She ducked her head, anxiety gnawing at her. She wouldnโ€™t actually kill me, too, right? she fretted, her heart thumping wildly.

Winifred could see right through her. Seriously? Does she just have to show her mind on her face? What an idiot, she thought.

โ€œWhat are you sneaking glances for! I have zero interest in morons. Killing you would just stain my gun. Stay away from me,โ€ Winifred snapped.

โ€œHey!โ€ Amber fumed, stomping her foot in anger โ€“ only then did she notice the water in the pit was rising fast. Panic flickered across her face. Is this really how Iโ€™m going to die? she thought, her heart pounding.

โ€œGet on my shoulders and see if you can reach the edge,โ€ Winifred said.

Amber glanced up at the distance and shook her head. โ€œNo way. Itโ€™s too far. I already measured โ€“ even if we stack up, we still canโ€™t reach.โ€

Winifred snapped, "Just get on my shoulders. Hurry up!"

Amber grudgingly stepped onto Winifredโ€™s shoulders, letting her support her weight. โ€œI told you it wouldnโ€™t work, but you wouldnโ€™t listen. Look, thereโ€™s still a huge gap up there! How are we supposed to getโ€ฆโ€

Winifred handed her a small knife. โ€œDig out the dirt and make yourself some steps to climb on.โ€

Amber hesitated. โ€œButโ€ฆโ€

โ€œNo buts. If you want to live, just do as I say. Once youโ€™re out, pull me up too,โ€ Winifred said.

Winifred shouted over the pouring rain. If this kept up, neither of them would make it out alive. They had to find a way to escape before the pit filled up with water.

Amber finally nodded. โ€œAlright.โ€

Amber had only just started digging when she suddenly felt Winifred wobble beneath her โ€“ her footing almost gave out as Winifred staggered. โ€œAre you okay?โ€ Amber asked, a hint of worry in her voice.

Winifred gritted her teeth. โ€œIโ€™m fine. This canโ€™t kill me.โ€

Part of her legs had gotten caught.

Trip, but luckily, she was quick enough to keep it from snapping her bone.

โ€œIโ€™ll stay down here, and you dig,โ€ Amber suggested.

Before she could even brash, Winifred cut her off. โ€œNot! Youโ€™re way too scrawny to hold me up!โ€

Amber bristled, crouched down, and slid along the pit wall. โ€œWho are you calling scrawny? Come on, get on my shoulders.โ€

โ€œAmber, quit acting crazy! We donโ€™t have time for this โ€“ the rainโ€™s coming down even harder,โ€ Winifred snapped, urgency in her voice.

โ€œYou donโ€™t have the strength, so Iโ€™ll stay down here.โ€

Winifred had nothing to say to that; she had to admit, Amber was right.

โ€œJust hold steady, Iโ€™m going up,โ€ Winifred said.

Amber nodded. โ€œGo ahead, step on me. I didnโ€™t finish a whole big pizza for lunch for nothing.โ€

Winifred snorted. โ€œFor someone so tiny, you sure can pack it away.โ€

โ€œOh, will you shut up already! Youโ€™re the one who can pack it away!โ€ Amber shot back.

Winifred was speechless. โ€œIs that seriously all you know what to say in a fight?โ€

She thought helplessly, What an idiot.
