Chapter 23
โThatโs right! You and Mr. Quinn have been together for three years now. Itโs about time, isnโt it?โ another chimed in. They all knew about her relationship with Mason. Heโd picked her up from the office more than once.
Vivianโs hands stilled. โNo,โ she said, her voice calm. โWe broke up. There wonโt be a wedding. Weโre over.โ
The sudden announcement left her colleagues speechless, but they were tactful enough not to press the issue.
โWell, out with the old, in with the new,โ one of them said cheerfully. โYouโll meet someone better.โ
โI think so too,โ Vivian said, smiling brightly.
Just then, their boss, Richard Wood, a middle-aged man in a gray shirt, rushed in, wiping sweat from his brow. โEveryone, listen up! I have an announcement.โ
โA major corporation wants to acquire Dynastis,โ he said, his voice trembling with excitement. โAs you all know, weโre a small company, barely staying afloat. This deal could change everything. Itโs the opportunity of a lifetime. So who wants to take the lead on this?โ
โMr. Wood, what company is it?โ someone asked.
โThe international SIE Corporation,โ answered Richard. A collective gasp went through the room.
โSIE? The global top five conglomerate? Mr. Wood, are you sure youโre not dreaming?โ one of the staff exclaimed.
โI think Iโm the one whoโs dreaming,โ the secretary said, her usually stoic expression completely shattered. โBut itโs true. Theyโre coming to the office this afternoon!โ
โIs this for real! Should we go home and change?โ someone added.
โYes! I need to do my makeup!โ another agreed.
โI need a haircut!โ the third also chimed.
Vivian was just as stunned as everyone else. How could this tiny company be acquired by a giant like SIE? She was confused.
โNo need,โ Richard said. โTheyโre just doing a preliminary visit. The actual negotiation will happen at a hotel. I need to choose someone to go with me.โ
Everyone immediately looked down, including Vivian. But Richardโs eyes were fixed on her. In terms of looks, talent, and work ethic, no one came close.
โVivian, youโre coming with me,โ said Richard. โGo home, change into something nice. Weโre meeting the people from SIE.โ
โMe?โ Vivian stammered, still reeling from the shock. โMr. Wood, are you sure I can handle it?โ
โYou can. Youโre the perfect fit,โ he said. Her beauty alone was enough to elevate the companyโs image. Hiring her had been a stroke of genius.
Vivian nodded, a new sense of determination filling her. She would not fall.
Chloe, meanwhile, was seething. The memory of Vivianโs insults fueled her rage. She was punching her pillow, her face a mask of ugly fury. But when Mason walked in, she immediately composed herself, shifting her expression to one of heartbreaking vulnerability.
โMason, youโre finally here,โ she whispered. โYou didnโt answer my calls, you didnโt reply to my texts. I thought youโd abandoned me. If you want to end things, just tell me. Please, donโt just give me the silent treatment. I canโt bear it.โ
Masonโs heart ached with guilt. He rushed to her side, pulling her into his arms. โChloe, what are you talking about? I would never do that. I was at my grandparentsโ house all night. You know their health isnโt good. I canโt be on my phone when Iโm with them.โ
He took her hand and made to slap his own face. โIโm so sorry. If youโre still angry, you can hit me.โ
He was lying, of course. It was the first time he had ever lied to her, and he believed it was all Vivianโs fault. If she hadnโt been so unreasonable, he wouldnโt have to deceive the woman he loved.
Chloe snatched her hand back as if sheโd been burned. โNo, Mason, I believe you. Donโt be like that. Iโve always been afraid Iโm a burden to you. Iโm sorry. I was just so scared that you would all leave me.โ
Seeing her so fragile, so full of love for him, Masonโs guilt deepened. โChloe, what nonsense are you talking about! You are the love of my life. I will never leave you.โ
โReally?โ Chloe nodded, sniffling. โBut Mason, I canโt be with you forever. Iโm not worthy of you. You and Vivianโฆ youโre the ones who should be together?โ
At the mention of Vivianโs name, a surge of anger went through Mason. Vivian had dared to defy him and still hadnโt come to him to apologize. โDonโt mention her to me,โ he snapped. โIโm going to end the engagement and marry you.โ
Chloeโs eyes lit up, but she quickly masked her elation. โMason, you donโt have to do that. I saved your life because I wanted to, not because I expected anything in return. Marrying Vivian is whatโs best for your family.โ
Mason stroked her hair, his heart aching. To him, Chloe was such a good person. She had sacrificed her health for him. He couldnโt betray her. โStop talking nonsense. I love you. My relationship with Vivian was just an arrangement.โ
Chloe coughed, her face paling. โMason, just hearing you say that is enough for me. I never dared to dream of anything more.โ
Her coughing grew more violent, and Mason panicked, calling for a doctor.
โShe didnโt do the blood transfusion this month yet, right?โ the doctor examined Chloeโs condition and asked. But then, Chloeโs sister, Lily Zalton, who was also a nurse, rushed in.
โMason, are you trying to kill my sister!โ she shrieked, her voice echoing down the hall. โSheโs lying in this bed because of you! If it werenโt for her, you wouldnโt even be standing here! All she needs is a little blood each month, and you canโt even provide that! Youโre just an ungrateful bastard, planning to throw her away?โ
Chloe struggled to sit up. โLily, donโt say that about Mason! He has his reasons! If you say one more bad thing about him, Iโll be really angry!โ
Lily just looked at Mason with disgust. โChloe is too kind. Do you really think anyone else would treat you with such selfless devotion? Search your conscience, Mason. She doesnโt even want to be your wife, she just wants you to be happy. And this is how you repay her!โ
