Chapter 23

โ€œThatโ€™s right! You and Mr. Quinn have been together for three years now. Itโ€™s about time, isnโ€™t it?โ€ another chimed in. They all knew about her relationship with Mason. Heโ€™d picked her up from the office more than once.

Vivianโ€™s hands stilled. โ€œNo,โ€ she said, her voice calm. โ€œWe broke up. There wonโ€™t be a wedding. Weโ€™re over.โ€

The sudden announcement left her colleagues speechless, but they were tactful enough not to press the issue.

โ€œWell, out with the old, in with the new,โ€ one of them said cheerfully. โ€œYouโ€™ll meet someone better.โ€

โ€œI think so too,โ€ Vivian said, smiling brightly.

Just then, their boss, Richard Wood, a middle-aged man in a gray shirt, rushed in, wiping sweat from his brow. โ€œEveryone, listen up! I have an announcement.โ€

โ€œA major corporation wants to acquire Dynastis,โ€ he said, his voice trembling with excitement. โ€œAs you all know, weโ€™re a small company, barely staying afloat. This deal could change everything. Itโ€™s the opportunity of a lifetime. So who wants to take the lead on this?โ€

โ€œMr. Wood, what company is it?โ€ someone asked.

โ€œThe international SIE Corporation,โ€ answered Richard. A collective gasp went through the room.

โ€œSIE? The global top five conglomerate? Mr. Wood, are you sure youโ€™re not dreaming?โ€ one of the staff exclaimed.

โ€œI think Iโ€™m the one whoโ€™s dreaming,โ€ the secretary said, her usually stoic expression completely shattered. โ€œBut itโ€™s true. Theyโ€™re coming to the office this afternoon!โ€

โ€œIs this for real! Should we go home and change?โ€ someone added.

โ€œYes! I need to do my makeup!โ€ another agreed.

โ€œI need a haircut!โ€ the third also chimed.

Vivian was just as stunned as everyone else. How could this tiny company be acquired by a giant like SIE? She was confused.

โ€œNo need,โ€ Richard said. โ€œTheyโ€™re just doing a preliminary visit. The actual negotiation will happen at a hotel. I need to choose someone to go with me.โ€

Everyone immediately looked down, including Vivian. But Richardโ€™s eyes were fixed on her. In terms of looks, talent, and work ethic, no one came close.

โ€œVivian, youโ€™re coming with me,โ€ said Richard. โ€œGo home, change into something nice. Weโ€™re meeting the people from SIE.โ€

โ€œMe?โ€ Vivian stammered, still reeling from the shock. โ€œMr. Wood, are you sure I can handle it?โ€

โ€œYou can. Youโ€™re the perfect fit,โ€ he said. Her beauty alone was enough to elevate the companyโ€™s image. Hiring her had been a stroke of genius.

Vivian nodded, a new sense of determination filling her. She would not fall.

Chloe, meanwhile, was seething. The memory of Vivianโ€™s insults fueled her rage. She was punching her pillow, her face a mask of ugly fury. But when Mason walked in, she immediately composed herself, shifting her expression to one of heartbreaking vulnerability.

โ€œMason, youโ€™re finally here,โ€ she whispered. โ€œYou didnโ€™t answer my calls, you didnโ€™t reply to my texts. I thought youโ€™d abandoned me. If you want to end things, just tell me. Please, donโ€™t just give me the silent treatment. I canโ€™t bear it.โ€

Masonโ€™s heart ached with guilt. He rushed to her side, pulling her into his arms. โ€œChloe, what are you talking about? I would never do that. I was at my grandparentsโ€™ house all night. You know their health isnโ€™t good. I canโ€™t be on my phone when Iโ€™m with them.โ€

He took her hand and made to slap his own face. โ€œIโ€™m so sorry. If youโ€™re still angry, you can hit me.โ€

He was lying, of course. It was the first time he had ever lied to her, and he believed it was all Vivianโ€™s fault. If she hadnโ€™t been so unreasonable, he wouldnโ€™t have to deceive the woman he loved.

Chloe snatched her hand back as if sheโ€™d been burned. โ€œNo, Mason, I believe you. Donโ€™t be like that. Iโ€™ve always been afraid Iโ€™m a burden to you. Iโ€™m sorry. I was just so scared that you would all leave me.โ€

Seeing her so fragile, so full of love for him, Masonโ€™s guilt deepened. โ€œChloe, what nonsense are you talking about! You are the love of my life. I will never leave you.โ€

โ€œReally?โ€ Chloe nodded, sniffling. โ€œBut Mason, I canโ€™t be with you forever. Iโ€™m not worthy of you. You and Vivianโ€ฆ youโ€™re the ones who should be together?โ€

At the mention of Vivianโ€™s name, a surge of anger went through Mason. Vivian had dared to defy him and still hadnโ€™t come to him to apologize. โ€œDonโ€™t mention her to me,โ€ he snapped. โ€œIโ€™m going to end the engagement and marry you.โ€

Chloeโ€™s eyes lit up, but she quickly masked her elation. โ€œMason, you donโ€™t have to do that. I saved your life because I wanted to, not because I expected anything in return. Marrying Vivian is whatโ€™s best for your family.โ€

Mason stroked her hair, his heart aching. To him, Chloe was such a good person. She had sacrificed her health for him. He couldnโ€™t betray her. โ€œStop talking nonsense. I love you. My relationship with Vivian was just an arrangement.โ€

Chloe coughed, her face paling. โ€œMason, just hearing you say that is enough for me. I never dared to dream of anything more.โ€

Her coughing grew more violent, and Mason panicked, calling for a doctor.

โ€œShe didnโ€™t do the blood transfusion this month yet, right?โ€ the doctor examined Chloeโ€™s condition and asked. But then, Chloeโ€™s sister, Lily Zalton, who was also a nurse, rushed in.

โ€œMason, are you trying to kill my sister!โ€ she shrieked, her voice echoing down the hall. โ€œSheโ€™s lying in this bed because of you! If it werenโ€™t for her, you wouldnโ€™t even be standing here! All she needs is a little blood each month, and you canโ€™t even provide that! Youโ€™re just an ungrateful bastard, planning to throw her away?โ€

Chloe struggled to sit up. โ€œLily, donโ€™t say that about Mason! He has his reasons! If you say one more bad thing about him, Iโ€™ll be really angry!โ€

Lily just looked at Mason with disgust. โ€œChloe is too kind. Do you really think anyone else would treat you with such selfless devotion? Search your conscience, Mason. She doesnโ€™t even want to be your wife, she just wants you to be happy. And this is how you repay her!โ€
