Listen to this chapter:

Vivian glanced at Siennaโ€™s face. She had inherited their motherโ€™s poised beauty and their fatherโ€™s striking features, giving her a powerful, captivating aura. Her presence was unmistakably like their motherโ€™s โ€“ the same protective strength that once sheltered them under her wings.

Vivianโ€™s lonely heart finally had an anchor. โ€œOkay,โ€ she whispered.

Meanwhile, at the Hartโ€™s residence, Aiden slammed his hand on the table.

โ€œThat Vivian!โ€ he raged at the sharp-faced woman beside him. โ€œSheโ€™s really gotten bold! The nerve of her, saying she wants to break the engagement! Itโ€™s infuriating! When she gets back, Iโ€™m going to teach her a lesson.โ€

Linda Lambert smiled sweetly, rubbing Aidenโ€™s back with practiced ease. โ€œNow, now, donโ€™t get so worked up over a kid. You know Iโ€™m their stepmother, and as the saying goes, a stepmomโ€™s never as good as a real mother. Itโ€™s no surprise they donโ€™t like me.โ€

Seeing Aiden start to settle down, she pressed on. โ€œTonightโ€™s my birthday. All I wanted was for you and the girls to be under one roof. The Quinns are here too โ€“ perfect timing to talk wedding plans. I never thought Vivian would be the one to bring up ending things with Mason.โ€

โ€œLinda, youโ€™re too good. That girl is just ungrateful. Youโ€™re always thinking of them, and they resent you for it,โ€ Aiden took her hand, sighing. โ€œDonโ€™t worry. She will be here tonight to celebrate your birthday.โ€

As he spoke, he noticed her attire. The burgundy dress, the jewelry, the earrings โ€“ they had all belonged to his late wife. For a split second, an image of his late wife, Selina Bayerโ€™s face flashed in his mind.

He frowned. โ€œDidnโ€™t I tell you not to touch these things?โ€

Lindaโ€™s face fell. She dabbed at her eyes with a handkerchief, her voice thick with tears. โ€œDarling, I didnโ€™t mean any harm. I justโ€ฆ I knew Vivian would be here tonight, and I wanted her to feel a sense of her motherโ€™s love. I truly had no other motive.โ€

Hearing this, Aidenโ€™s anger melted away again. He pulled her into a comforting embrace. โ€œIโ€™m sorry. I didnโ€™t mean to get angry with you.โ€

โ€œSir, Madam,โ€ the butler chimed in and announced. โ€œMr. Mason has arrived.โ€

Mason had planned to attend a friendโ€™s party, but after waiting for Vivian for what felt like an eternity, heโ€™d gotten angry and told Aiden about her threat to end the engagement.

Hearing it was Lindaโ€™s birthday, he knew Vivian would have to show up. So heโ€™d ditched his friendโ€™s party to confront her. Heโ€™d made up his mind: if Vivian didnโ€™t bow down and apologize, the engagement was off.

He stepped into the Hart living room, where Aiden and Linda quickly came forward to greet him.

โ€œMason, my boy, what are you doing here?โ€ Aiden said warmly. โ€œI thought just your parents were coming.โ€

โ€œMr. Hart, Iโ€™m here to find Vivian,โ€ Mason replied. โ€œHasnโ€™t she returned yet?โ€

Before Aiden could answer, Linda smiled. โ€œSheโ€™ll be here soon. We just called to remind her to be careful on the road. You know how these kids are, insisting on living outside when they have a perfectly good home. Itโ€™s not as safe out there, is it?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re right, Ms. Lambert,โ€ Mason said. โ€œVivian is just too immature. Last night she was going on about breaking up with me, making a clean break. I didnโ€™t want to argue with her, so I went to see her this morning, and she completely ignored me.โ€

Aidenโ€™s face darkened. โ€œDonโ€™t worry. When she gets back, Iโ€™ll be sure to teach her a lesson.โ€

On the other hand, under Siennaโ€™s guidance, Vivian had been transformed. With exquisite makeup and a flowing white gown, she looked graceful, pure, and stunningly beautiful.

When she showed up at the Hartโ€™s residence, everyone stared. Even Mason, seeing this elegant and regal version of Vivian for the first time, felt his heart skip a beat. Only Linda narrowed her eyes, looking displeased.
