Chapter 95

Driving away from the stables, Charlene felt lost. Connie and Stewart were preoccupied. She considered returning to the Ross estate, but with Jasmine absent, going back alone would only worry the matriarch. As she weighed her options, she passed a wetland park teeming with families enjoying a sunny day. Watching the happy couples and families stirred a mix of envy and sadness within her.

After driving for a while, she impulsively pulled over and, after a moment's hesitation, called her mother. "Hello, how's my mother doing?" she asked.

An hour and a half later, she stood in the courtyard of Harmony Health Retreat. From a distance, Charlene observed Sybil Ross. Her mother sat, looking frail and vacant, a stark contrast to the vibrant woman of Charlene's childhood memories. Despite the familiarity of this sight, Charlene's heart ached.

"The same as always, no change," the director murmured after a while. Sybil couldn't interact with people from her past without risking a relapse. Currently in a rare state of calm, Charlene chose not to disturb her. After a brief pause, concerned Sybil might see her, Charlene quietly left the courtyard. She thanked the director and staff caring for her mother. "Ms. Ross, it's our duty," they replied.

After one last look through the glass, leaving behind some books and personal items for Sybil, Charlene departed, her mood heavy. Passing the wetland park again, the sight of kites dancing in the sky prompted her to turn around.

The park was breezy and sunny, picturesque. Yet, alone among the groups of people, she felt out of place. Contemplating a kite purchase, a small hand tugged at her fingers. "Lady," a voice said.

Surprised, Charlene looked down to see Daisy, who nodded without letting go. "Daisy—"

Granger appeared, pausing, then approached. "Are you here for some fun, too?"

"Yeah," Charlene replied.

"Came with Minnie?"

Looking down, Charlene's voice was soft. "No, just me."

Understanding her situation, Granger fell silent. As Charlene considered leaving, given their superficial acquaintance, Daisy looked up. "Lady, let's fly a kite together."

"I can't, sweetie. I have other things to do," Charlene gently declined.

Daisy's face fell. "Oh…"

Granger interjected, "Why not join us? It's just the two of us. I'll just watch over. It's like giving Daisy another playmate."

Charlene genuinely liked Daisy. She really didn't want to be alone. She didn't refuse.

Together, they chose a kite—a blue butterfly, a favorite of both. Charlene had experience with kites from past outings with Jasmine. But this kite was large and tricky for Daisy to manage alone. Granger silently helped, facilitating an unexpected moment of companionship.
