Chapter 260
At the top of Eaglecrest Mountain, a crowd had gathered, making the place buzz with energy. Elizabeth looked down at the forest and roads below, feeling a rush of excitement.
โThinking of joining in?โ Lila asked from beside her.
Elizabeth turned to see Lila, dressed in black with a mask and hat, keeping a low profile. โYou know me too well!โ Elizabeth grinned.
Tonight, Elizabeth wore a black cropped top and a skirt-pants combo. Her curly hair flowed down her back, and her makeup was on point.
โThen go for it. Just be safe,โ Lila said, pointing to the registration area.
Elizabeth felt a bit nervous. โItโs been a while since I last raced.โ
โAfraid of losing?โ Lila teased.
Elizabethโs smile widened. โIโm afraid theyโll be bummed losing to someone who hasnโt raced in years.โ
Lila nudged her. โYou wonโt regret it a month from now, right?โ
โWhat did you say?โ Elizabeth leaned in, pretending not to hear.
Lila pouted, knowing Elizabeth was messing with her. โA month from now, when you get the divorce papers, you wonโt regret it, right?โ
โLila, I take back my compliment,โ Elizabeth joked.
Just then, Felix ran over, excited. โThis time, someone from a professional team is joining the race!โ
It seemed tonightโs race was going to be different. Originally, it was just a casual race organized by the Wildman Team for fun. But with a pro joining, the competition got serious.
โWant to join?โ Felix asked Elizabeth.
โI canโt keep up,โ Elizabeth said, shaking her head.
Felix pouted. โStop being modest.โ
Nearby, someone said, โEver since Steve left, these races have been so dull.โ
โYeah, everyone thinks theyโre the best. No respect!โ
โI miss the days when Steve was around. Wonder if Iโll ever see her race again.โ
Elizabeth turned to see a few men in their thirties, smoking and reminiscing. She looked down at the sports cars already in position, waiting for the race to start at eleven.
Suddenly, Lila got bumped, causing her to stumble. Elizabeth quickly steadied her. Elizabeth saw a young man, looking like a thug, eyeing Lila.
โYouโre Lila, right?โ Victor Scott leaned in and asked.
Elizabeth stepped forward, shielding Lila. โNo, youโve got the wrong person.โ
โYouโre Elizabeth from the Percy family, right?โ Victor pointed at her. He looked at Elizabeth, then at Lila. โThey say beautiful people hang out together. Didnโt believe it before, but now I do. Hey, Lila, take off your hat and mask, will you?โ Victor whistled, acting sleazy.
Elizabeth frowned. โShow some respect.โ
โRespect? Arenโt celebrities just for entertainment?โ Victor sneered, pushing Elizabeth aside to get to Lila.
โIf you take another step, donโt blame me for being rude,โ Elizabeth said coldly, slapping his arm away.
Victor sensed her assertiveness. He stared at her for a moment. People around them started to gather, waiting for a show. Lila kept her head down, thinking her disguise would work, but she was wrong.
โThink youโre special?โ Victor sneered, turning to leave. โWho knows how many men have had their way with you behind the scenes,โ
Elizabeth grabbed Victor by the collar. โApologize to her.โ
โWhat if I donโt? What are you gonna do about it?โ Victor challenged her.
