Chapter 28

The tension was thick, and Esme quickly interjected, โ€œAlexander, Alexander, why do you always pick fights with Elizabeth the moment you see her?โ€ Alexander averted his gaze, his expression hardening. He forced a smile. โ€œYou two were married once. Even if you donโ€™t care about her anymore, sheโ€™s still a woman. Canโ€™t you just let it go?โ€

Elizabeth tuned out Esmeโ€™s words. She knew Esme was trying to rub her relationship with Alexander in her face and make her feel small. Just being in her presence was aggravating.

โ€œSince we bumped into each other, itโ€™s fate. Elizabeth, how about a game? Loser has to do whatever the winner says. Deal?โ€ Esme approached with a fake-friendly vibe.

Elizabeth smirked; Esme was up to her old tricks. Esme knew Elizabeth sucked at golf, and now she wanted to play a game with her. Esme blinked, playing dumb. โ€œElizabeth, you scared? Donโ€™t know how to play golf?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t you already know if I can play or not?โ€ Elizabeth shot back.

Esme didnโ€™t expect Elizabeth to be so bold. She clung to Alexanderโ€™s arm. That little move made Elizabethโ€™s heart ache. She envied Esme. No matter what, Alexander always had her back.

โ€œDoes she really need to know if you can play?โ€ Alexander snapped.

Elizabeth looked at him, a mix of emotions swirling inside. He always took Esmeโ€™s side. I just love you. Why do you treat me like this? she thought.

โ€œElizabethโ€™s not great at golf. How about this, Ms. Russell, Iโ€™ll play withโ€”,โ€ Joseph said, pulling Elizabeth behind him.

For the first time, Elizabeth felt safe, something she never felt with Alexander. Looking at Josephโ€™s back, she felt a wave of gratitude. Alexander glared at Joseph, eyes blazing.

Esme glanced at Joseph but didnโ€™t bite. She just smiled at Elizabeth and said, โ€œI still want to play with Elizabeth.โ€ No matter what, Alexander would back her up. So Esme didnโ€™t mind being a bit arrogant.

โ€œMs. Russell, isnโ€™t it a bit much to force someone?โ€ Joseph said, smirking.

โ€œDidnโ€™t Elizabeth come here to have fun? Weโ€™re just having a good time. Whatโ€™s so unreasonable about that?โ€ Esme shot back, her face smug.

Elizabethโ€™s throat tightened as she stared at Esme. Hard to believe they used to be so close. Theyโ€™d skipped school together, wore matching dresses, bought the same jewelryโ€”practically inseparable, almost like lovers. But now? Everything was different.

โ€œIf Elizabeth doesnโ€™t want to play, she can just sit and hold my stuff, right?โ€ Esme raised an eyebrow, a glint of malice in her eyes.

Elizabethโ€™s face went cold. Does she think Iโ€™m her servant? The nerve! she thought.

โ€œMs. Russell, are you serious? This is Elizabeth. You want her to serve you?โ€ Josephโ€™s eyes darkened, losing their warmth.

โ€œIf Elizabeth wonโ€™t play golf or do anything else, did she come here just to flirt with men?โ€ Esme snapped, unable to hold back. Her words got nastier by the second.

Elizabeth had enough. โ€œFine, Iโ€™ll play golf with you,โ€ she said coldly. She was always straightforward, never afraid of a challenge; otherwise, she wouldnโ€™t have married Alexander.

Alexander frowned, surprised Elizabeth agreed. Esme squinted, mocking Elizabeth for being so clueless. Elizabeth had barely touched a golf club, while Esme had been playing for years. Yet, Elizabeth dared to challenge her.

โ€œAlright! Letโ€™s make this bet even juicier! Loser has to kiss the first guy they see after leaving!โ€
