Chapter 31
โYouโre still my wife. Even if you donโt care about your reputation, I care about mine!โ he snapped, teeth clenched, brows furrowed. If Lily found out, their divorce would be public knowledge. No way Alexander would let this mess happen on his watch! Until the divorce was final, Elizabeth had to play nice!
โWhen youโre flaunting your fiancรฉe, itโs fine. But when I kiss someone, itโs shameful?โ Elizabeth shot back.
Alexanderโs throat tightened, his gaze darkening, his grip tightening. He lowered his voice. โElizabeth, Iโm giving you a way out. Donโt push it.โ He didnโt believe she really wanted to kiss that guy.
Seeing his anger, Elizabeth smiled seductively. โAre you offering me an excuse, or just losing your cool?โ Elizabethโs lips curled as she scrutinized Alexanderโs handsome face.
Alexander frowned, annoyed she could read him so well. He swallowed, his gaze turning icy. โElizabeth, weโre getting divorced. You really think I still care?โ
Elizabethโs heart skipped a beat, memories flooding back of what heโd said that day. โElizabeth, donโt fool yourself into thinking I could ever love you!โ And now, here he was, same tone. โYou still think I care?โ
Alexander let go of her hand, his face blank. โEven if youโre not concerned about the media or Grandma Lily finding out, you should at least consider your dateโs feelings.โ
Elizabeth bit her lip, staring at him, sadness welling up. After a moment, she whispered, โYouโre right.โ Her words only made Alexander angrier. Elizabeth turned to Joseph, eyes full of apology. โJoseph, Iโm sorry. Just nowโฆโ
โItโs okay,โ Joseph cut her off.
โElizabeth, ran into a friend? Itโs pretty lively here,โ came Declanโs cheerful voice from behind.
Everyone turned. Declanโs smile vanished the moment he saw Alexander. He hadnโt expected to see him here. Declan stormed over, putting himself between Elizabeth and Alexander. โDid he mess with you, Elizabeth?โ he demanded.
Elizabethโs eyes went dull. โNo, Dad.โ
Alexander, keeping his cool, nodded. โDad.โ Theyโd crossed paths in business so many times, calling him โDadโ had become second nature.
โDonโt call me that!โ Declan snapped. โElizabethโs not good enough for you. You donโt need to call me Dad.โ
Alexander was at a loss for words. โElizabeth, letโs go! Weโre not staying in this cursed place!โ Declan grabbed her hand and pulled her away.
Alexander watched her leave, eyes dark and brooding. He slumped into a chair, troubled.
โAlexander.โ Esme knelt beside him, taking his hand. โI know itโs tough. Iโm here with you.โ
He looked down, gently stroking her hair before hugging her. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Elizabeth hesitate at the door. Elizabethโs breath caught seeing them together. Even though she knew how much they loved each other, it still hurt. She walked over to grab her forgotten phone. Alexander let go of Esme and stood up, looking like he wanted to say something.
Outside, Joseph asked, โElizabeth, did you find your phone?โ
Alexander felt a tug on his fingers. He looked down to see Esme staring up at him, confused.
