Unrepairable Love

Chapter 412

Celine was about to answer Claire Riveraโ€™s question when she noticed Claireโ€™s attention shift to Elizabeth. Claire asked, โ€œMrs. Percy, whyโ€™d you bring someone who shouldnโ€™t be here to the lab?โ€

โ€œWhat do you mean, shouldnโ€™t be? This is my granddaughter!โ€ Celine snapped back, clearly annoyed.

Claire gave Elizabeth a once-over, her expression anything but friendly. Elizabeth shrugged off Claireโ€™s glare; she knew she was an outsider here.

โ€œClaire Rivera, this is my granddaughter. Sheโ€™s not an outsider,โ€ Celine repeated, more firmly this time.

Claire was a big deal in the lab, but she had a bit of an ego, always aiming high and looking down on others. Still, because she was a rare talent, handpicked from a hundred candidates, Celine and the others put up with her. After all, Claire did have the chops.

Claire didnโ€™t seem to care. She turned to Celine and said, โ€œMrs. Percy, Iโ€™ve been in this lab for years, and I need to tell you something.โ€

Celine gestured for her to go ahead.

Even though Celine had a lot of clout here, she never threw her weight around. She knew everyone was in this together for the project. But, of course, not everyone fit in perfectly.

โ€œWeโ€™ve been at this for years with no success. Itโ€™s clear this thing is unsolvable. I think when this deadline hits, we should just call it quits,โ€ Claire suggested, her tone icy.

Celineโ€™s face hardened. She had poured years and a ton of money into this research, and now Claire was talking about quitting. Research was a one-way street; once you started, there was no turning back!

โ€œWe havenโ€™t had any major breakthroughs for years, and there wonโ€™t be any in the future either. Mrs. Percy, Iโ€™m really thinking about whatโ€™s best for the team and for you!โ€ Claire continued, sounding almost sincere.

โ€œWeโ€™re on the verge of a major breakthrough,โ€ Celine said confidently. But Claire didnโ€™t seem to care.

Celine frowned. โ€œClaire, I told you when you first joined the lab that we canโ€™t give up halfway.โ€

โ€œWe wonโ€™t,โ€ Celine insisted.

Claire was exasperated. โ€œBut we havenโ€™t succeeded in years. Why keep going? We havenโ€™t had a breakthrough in ages, and we wonโ€™t have one anytime soon!โ€

โ€œWhat if there is a breakthrough?โ€ Elizabeth suddenly chimed in.

Claire looked Elizabeth up and down, her disdain obvious. Elizabeth squinted as Claire said, โ€œWhat breakthrough? Youโ€™re just kidding yourselves!โ€ Then Claire took her work badge and said coldly, โ€œIโ€™ve already submitted my transfer report. When this year ends, Iโ€™m out.โ€

Celine reminded her, โ€œClaire, we signed an agreement. If Claire left, thereโ€™d be no one to fill her shoes.โ€

โ€œI just canโ€™t do this job anymore.โ€ Claire thought that even though she was still young, she needed to work on successful projects to make a name for herself. She came here right after graduation, and in over ten years, she hadnโ€™t completed a single project. What was the point of being unknown for so long?

Celine was silent for a few seconds. She picked up the Serenity Leaf in her hand and asked, โ€œCan you guess what this is?โ€

Claire looked at Celine, puzzled. She figured it wasnโ€™t anything important to the project, so she didnโ€™t bother to look.

โ€œThis is the Serenity Leaf,โ€ Celine said seriously. โ€œClaire, think about it. How much will you lose if you quit now?โ€

With that, Celine left with Elizabeth. Elizabeth turned to watch Claireโ€™s reaction. Claire first frowned, processing what Celine had just said, then her eyes widened, and finally, she looked shocked.

Claire swallowed hard and asked, โ€œSerenity Leaf?โ€

Elizabeth smiled. โ€œGrandma, if she wants to leave, why not let her go? This lab wonโ€™t fall apart without her,โ€ Elizabeth said, holding Celineโ€™s arm, clearly puzzled.

Celine sighed. โ€œLeave? Do you really believe that? Our research has hit a wall for years, and everyoneโ€™s frustrated. If we talk to her, sheโ€™ll stay.โ€
