Chapter 500
The rain started up again that night. By 8:30 in the morning, Elizabeth finally stepped out of the operating room. Instead of heading to the emergency room entrance, she avoided it. She couldnโt bear to see the disappointment on her familyโs faces. With nowhere else to go, she hid out at Base M.
When Felix saw her return, he rushed over. โElizabeth, howโs your grandma?โ
Elizabeth glanced around. She looked at all the electronic gear in Base M, thought about Celine, and couldnโt help but laugh. These gadgets were the result of these researchersโ lifelong efforts.
โElizabeth,โ Fรฉlix said, panicking. Her laughter freaked him out. Oliver walked over and handed her a cup of water. Elizabeth looked at the two young men in front of her and finally spoke, her voice hoarse and barely audible, โI did my best.โ
She really did. Nick and she had tried everything. But Celine was just too old and too hurt; they could only save her arm. At the hospitalโs emergency room entrance, when Grant heard the news, he collapsed onto a bench. โDad,โ Rose and Declan shouted. Chaos erupted at the emergency room entrance. Celineโs right hand was paralyzed. From the initial coldness to the final purple hue, Elizabeth watched Celineโs arm become untreatable.
Elizabeth always thought she was invincible, always believed medicine was advanced enough. It wasnโt until she truly said, โI did my best,โ that she realized how powerless they were.
Felix couldnโt believe it. โEven you canโt do it?โ
โFelix, Elizabeth is human, not God,โ Oliver gently reminded him.
Felix didnโt know what to say. But in their hearts, Elizabeth was like a god who would sacrifice herself for others. โSo you ran here, what about over there?โ Felix asked her.
Elizabeth sighed. โMy familyโs all there; they can handle it.โ What she was really worried about now was what to do when Celine woke up. Celine was so old, and even though sheโd always been in good shape, this illness was too much for her.
โMaybe this is to keep you from leaving. Itโs just that the price is too high,โ Oliver said to Elizabeth.
Elizabeth looked at him. โOliver, youโre young, but you have a lot of wisdom.โ She forced a smile. Seeing her sadness, Felix patted her shoulder and then left with Oliver.
Elizabeth needed some rest. She needed some peace and quiet. Sheโd been through so much lately. After all, she was only twenty-four. Felix closed the door, not daring to sigh in front of her. It wasnโt until he was outside that he took a deep breath. It was too much.
โI really donโt know what Iโd do if it were me,โ Felix shook his head and sighed again. Oliver sighed too, and the two young men walked away, sighing. This puzzled Margaret, who had just come back. โWhatโs up with you two?โ They sighed again.
