“What’s wrong? Weren’t you two a perfect match?” Elizabeth’s words were cut off by a look from Lila. She then smiled. “I’m just kidding. I actually don’t want you to be with someone like Kieran, who has status and position.” She glanced at Kieran, who didn’t have enough time to spend with Lila. Lila’s job was already busy, and with Kieran being even busier, they shouldn’t see each other much throughout the year.
And there’s another important point. Lila had many admirers, and so did Kieran. Their admirers came from different fields. Although they seemed well-matched in many ways, there were countless ways in which they were not.
“Elizabeth, I was never going to be with Kieran. Don’t overthink it,” Lila said softly, not forgetting to glance at Kieran, who was still chatting with friends in the distance.
Hearing Lila’s words, Elizabeth felt relieved. She just thought her own marriage was already a mess, and she didn’t want Lila’s marriage to be a disaster too. If Lila’s career was stable now, it was better to prioritize career development.
“Elizabeth,” Lila called her.
Elizabeth looked up, puzzled.
“Are you afraid of being hurt by Alexander?” Lila asked her.
Elizabeth was silent. It would be a lie to say she wasn’t afraid of it. But to say she was completely terrified of him wasn’t true either. He was just a man. And she couldn’t let him leave a lifelong scar on her heart. She couldn’t let herself be afraid to love again for the rest of her life.
“No,” Elizabeth answered Lila seriously, “I just think it’s too hard for women. We’re always the ones who fall the hardest. I hope all women don’t get trapped in the whirlpool of love. Love when it’s time to love, but if you find out the other person doesn’t love you, then you need to pull yourself out and see the relationship clearly.”
‘Women are like water,’ Rose used to say this, and Elizabeth didn’t understand before. Now she gradually understood.
Women need to be cherished. The more you love and pamper her, the more gentle and lovely she becomes. But if a woman is worn down by life, all she’ll get in return is a man saying, “Why have you changed?”
“Elizabeth, I know you’ve been hurt in love. But if a good relationship comes your way, I still hope you can embrace it bravely. Because you deserve it,” Lila gently comforted Elizabeth.

Elizabeth smiled. She thought to herself, Wasn’t she supposed to be the one telling how to protect herself? How did it turn into Lila comforting her?
“Elizabeth, I’ll always be by your side. I’ll never be like Esme.” Lila held Elizabeth’s hand, her eyes full of sincerity. She would be Elizabeth’s best friend for life. And she would never betray her and would always support any decision she made!
“Got it.” Elizabeth always believed that Lila would be her lifelong friend.
Lila squinted and smiled, her eyes incredibly gentle.
When Kieran glanced over, he saw Lila smiling so beautifully. Lila’s smile for Elizabeth was genuine. Her smile for Kieran was just perfunctory.
“Did you bring a driver? Want to have a drink?” Lila handed Elizabeth a glass of wine. After all, it was a banquet, and having a drink would make it more interesting.
Elizabeth thought that one drink shouldn’t be a big deal. She then clinked glasses with Lila, only to find that after the first drink, there was a second.
