Joseph got out of the car and walked over. Elizabeth took a couple of steps back, keeping her distance from Alexander. That retreat made Alexander's heart ache.
โElizabeth, am I late?โ Joseph joked.
โNo,โ Joseph was on time; Alexander had just arrived. โWant me to go with you to the hospital for your follow-up?โ he asked.
She was about to leave with Joseph when Alexander grabbed her wrist, harder this time. Under the sycamore tree, morning sunlight streamed through the branches, casting dappled light on them. Alexander looked at Elizabethโs trembling wrist and swallowed. He whispered, โAre you sure you want to go with him?โ
Elizabeth looked at Alexander. Their eyes met. His emotions were unreadable, and she couldnโt figure him out. Maybe she never really understood Alexander. She remembered the summer of their senior year when Alexander brought her to school to break off their engagement. It was the same scene, except Alexander was holding Esmeโs hand. She had tried to hold Alexanderโs hand, asking, โAre you sure you want to break off the engagement?โ He had pushed her away and left with Esme, leaving her humiliated in front of the whole school.
โAlexander, stop it.โ Elizabethโs tone was calm.
Alexanderโs turned sullen as he watched Elizabeth push his hand away and walk towards Joseph. Joseph opened the car door for Elizabeth and smiled at Alexander. โMr. Tudor, Iโll take care of Elizabeth. Donโt worry.โ
Elizabeth paused at the car door and looked at Alexander. The light illuminated his face, and he looked at her with a burning gaze. Her heart skipped a beat. She bent down to get into the car. Alexander swallowed, his eyes darkening, and suddenly strode towards her. Joseph frowned, sensing Alexanderโs intention, and moved to stop him. But Alexander grabbed Elizabethโs arm and picked her up.
โAlexander!โ Elizabeth called out, โYouโre crazy!โ
He ignored Elizabeth and shot Joseph a cold, harsh glare, snapping, โMr. Stewart, my wifeโs matters are none of your concern.โ
Elizabeth was stunned. She looked at Alexander, confused. What was he doing? Was this some weird possessiveness? โAlexander, put me down.โ Elizabeth pushed against his chest, frustrated. โDo you even know what youโre doing?โ she whispered angrily.
Alexander looked down at her, his voice low. โElizabeth, if you still want a divorce, be good.โ
โWhat do you mean?โ she asked, confused.
He placed her in the passenger seat and looked at her. โExactly what it sounds like!โ
