Chapter 51

I shook my head before addressing Lukas. "I believe further action is unnecessary, Mr. Strakovski. While Hugo may have temporarily diverted public attention, the damage to Trifleming Jewelry's reputation remains, and his notoriety is difficult to overcome. To reinvigorate the company, they'll likely need a new CEO.

"However, given his disposition, I doubt he'll readily relinquish his hard-earned gains. Therefore, Trifleming Jewelry seems destined for stagnation within the industry. Frankly, that might be the most fitting retribution."

Lukas's eyes flickered. "You seem to possess a perceptive understanding of the matter."

"Thank you, Mr. Strakovski," I replied with a modest nod.

A chill settled over the room, and Lukas subtly cleared his throat, ending the moment. "Unless there's anything else, you may return to the design department."

I nodded. "Very well, then. I shall take my leave."

My steps carried me toward the exit, but Lukas's voice stopped me. "Oh, and before I forget, you needn't wait for a ride after work. I have personal matters to attend to."

Realizing I had used Lukas's vehicle that morning, I nodded gracefully. "Certainly, I'll make my own arrangements."

A sense of relief washed over me as I left the meeting room. Lukas's words resonated in my mind, prompting a faint smile. Over the past two days, I had indeed overstepped.

Ava's earlier suggestion that Lukas's assistance was motivated by deeper feelings now took on a new perspective. No wonder Lukas was often described as distant and ruthless, his demeanor anything but accommodating.

I reflected on my own naiveté, acknowledging that my initial perception of Lukas was overly simplistic. The man was neither amicable nor easygoing! Perhaps my attempt to seek consolation elsewhere after being hurt by Hugo was misguided. Such mistakes must not be repeated.

It's ironic. I joked about making Bella pay a stupidity tax, and now the joke's on me.

As the workday ended, Ava called, inviting me to dinner. Usually immersed in her computer, she displayed unusual curiosity upon seeing me.

"Your husband seems rather smitten with you. He treats you quite generously."

My mind conjured the meeting room scene; my expression tensed slightly as I shook my head. "You're reading too much into it. Our relationship is based on mutual gain. His actions primarily benefit the company and have no personal sentiment."

Ava's brows furrowed. "Are you absolutely sure?"

After dinner, Ava led me to buy painting brushes, for design drafts. I understood: a man's birthday approached.

For years, Ava had bought a set of paintbrushes annually, but each year, she failed to give them away because she couldn't find the intended recipient.

Ava's temperament was cold and indifferent. Since I'd known her, she'd only shown interest in two things: her laptop and Cole.

I accompanied her to the mall and bought the brushes. As we left a men's luxury store, Ava said, "Sophia, would you like to get Lukas a gift as well?"

I was surprised. "Why would I get him a gift?"

Ava looked at me. "To repay him for saving your neck. Yes, his intervention served the company's interests, but he truly saved you last night!"

I recalled confiding in Ava about the previous night's events, and how her usually cool demeanor had turned ashen with anger. Yesterday's events had been a lifesaver; without his intervention, I would have faced a fate worse than death at the hands of Gerald.

I considered Ava's suggestion, finding merit in it. Ava believed in repaying kindness. Her affection for Cole stemmed from his rescuing her after a car accident that hospitalized her. Besides, I intended to clearly distinguish myself from Lukas in the future. Therefore, I needed to address grievances and repay kindness with kindness. Lukas saved me, and I should express gratitude.

With that, I agreed. "Fine. Let's go inside."

I chose a pair of deep-sea blue cufflinks—restrained yet luxurious—that seemed perfect for Lukas.

We made our purchases, and Ava escorted me to a taxi. As we exited the mall, Ava suddenly released my hand and ran off, apparently having spotted something she couldn't resist.

I was stunned and quickly caught up with her. She led me to a nearby bar, Old Barrel, where she finally stopped. "Ava, what's going on?"

Breathless, Ava clung to my hand, her voice hysterical. "I saw Cole, Sophia. I saw him!"
