Chapter 5

Third Person's POV

Months later, as Charlotte's due date approached, Kayden became her constant shadow. When labor began, he found himself trapped in the sterile hospital hallway, pacing a well-worn path in the floor. Feeling utterly useless, he could only wait and hope for the best.

He wasn't the only one anxious. Ryan, Charlotte's childhood friend, was also there. Kayden's jaw tightened—of course, he would show up now. Usually, Ryan wasn't even on his radar. They had a history, of course, but Charlotte wasn't some small-town girl easily impressed by charm and good looks. Her lifestyle demanded substantial wealth. She had built her own empire and was attracted to power. That's why Kayden had waited to solidify his success before making his move.

Ryan might be her best friend, but she'd never settle for someone living paycheck to paycheck. Kayden felt secure enough to tolerate Ryan's presence, annoying as it was.

An hour later, the doors opened. A nurse emerged with their son—the gender was no surprise, thanks to their private clinic. While Kayden remained composed, Ryan openly wept.

They wheeled Charlotte out, Kayden on her left, Ryan on her right. Kayden wouldn't lower himself to compete with someone so irrelevant, but it stung when Charlotte's first glance went to Ryan. His expression darkened, though he relaxed slightly when Ryan remained behind.

"Jesus," Kayden muttered. "You'd think he was the baby daddy, getting all emotional like that."

Charlotte tensed. "Don't start. He's my oldest friend—we grew up together. He's just happy for me."

Kayden dropped it. She always used the same defense, and if he pushed, she'd bring up Gabriella.

Gabriella. The thought twisted his gut. How long had it been? Was she truly done with him?

He drifted into memories until Charlotte's sharp voice yanked him back. She glared at him, tears of rage in her eyes.

"Which slut are you daydreaming about now, Kayden? Bet it's that little bitch Gabriella, isn't it?"
