Chapter 133
โA writer who canโt produce work or make salesโare they still a writer?โ
Mindy was upset. โI have lots of ideas, butโโ
Edith interrupted. โYour ideas arenโt special or interesting. Writing them would just waste time and wouldnโt make any sales! Do you still think youโre the โQueen of Suspenseโ? Honestly, youโre past your prime! Mindy, you need to face the facts!โ
Miranda, unable to bear it any longer, stepped out from behind the shelf.
Mindy quickly wiped her tears and forced a smile. โDid you get the baking powder?โ
Miranda held up the packet. โHere it is. Itโs getting late, and Dad might be home from school soon. Letโs hurry and check out.โ
โOkay.โ
โWell, Mrs. Jiver, we should get going,โ Miranda said to Edith, speaking for her mother. She could tell Mindy was really upset and didnโt want to deal with Edith anymore.
Edith smiled politely. โOkay, Iโll keep looking around. And Mindy, please think about what I said. Weโve been working together for a long time.โ
Mindy kept her eyes down and said nothing.
Miranda took the shopping cart and led her mother out.
โMom, did you sign a ten-year contract with Mrs. Jiver?โ
โYes.โ
โIf I remember correctly, this should be the last year, right?โ
Mindy did the math and nodded. โYes, it is.โ
โWhat do you think of her?โ Miranda asked.
Mindy thought for a moment and said, โSheโs still very professional.โ
Miranda smiled. โCan you find the contract tonight and show it to me?โ
โSure. But why?โ
โIโm just curious. Is it okay if I look at it?โ
โOf course! You can see anything of mine.โ
โHeheโฆ Mom, youโre the best. And can you send me copies of the novels youโve written over the years?โ
Mindy was surprised. โThose are just practice drafts. Why do you want to read them?โ
โWell, having a writer mom is pretty cool. I want to read your work so I can talk about it if anyone asks. I donโt want them to think Iโm lying!โ
As a child, Miranda had really wanted to read her momโs famous books, โMurder Weaponโ and โThe Deserted School.โ But her mom always said they were โtoo violent,โ โnot for kids,โ and โbetter to read after youโre 18.โ By the time Miranda turned 18, she wasnโt interested anymore and never read them. It wasnโt until after college, while waiting for Hansel to come home, that she finally read those books.
She had to admit that her mother was amazing at writing suspense. The way the stories were put together, with all the twists and turns, was perfect. No wonder those books were still bestsellers.
But in the last ten years, her mother hadnโt published any new suspense novels. Miranda found this odd but hadnโt asked why.
Now, seeing her motherโs editor dressed in fancy clothes and carrying an expensive handbag, Miranda began to understand. How could a publishing editor afford such luxury? What kind of publishing house would make that much money? Why didnโt she know about this before?
