Chapter 133

โ€œA writer who canโ€™t produce work or make salesโ€”are they still a writer?โ€

Mindy was upset. โ€œI have lots of ideas, butโ€”โ€

Edith interrupted. โ€œYour ideas arenโ€™t special or interesting. Writing them would just waste time and wouldnโ€™t make any sales! Do you still think youโ€™re the โ€˜Queen of Suspenseโ€™? Honestly, youโ€™re past your prime! Mindy, you need to face the facts!โ€

Miranda, unable to bear it any longer, stepped out from behind the shelf.

Mindy quickly wiped her tears and forced a smile. โ€œDid you get the baking powder?โ€

Miranda held up the packet. โ€œHere it is. Itโ€™s getting late, and Dad might be home from school soon. Letโ€™s hurry and check out.โ€

โ€œOkay.โ€

โ€œWell, Mrs. Jiver, we should get going,โ€ Miranda said to Edith, speaking for her mother. She could tell Mindy was really upset and didnโ€™t want to deal with Edith anymore.

Edith smiled politely. โ€œOkay, Iโ€™ll keep looking around. And Mindy, please think about what I said. Weโ€™ve been working together for a long time.โ€

Mindy kept her eyes down and said nothing.

Miranda took the shopping cart and led her mother out.

โ€œMom, did you sign a ten-year contract with Mrs. Jiver?โ€

โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œIf I remember correctly, this should be the last year, right?โ€

Mindy did the math and nodded. โ€œYes, it is.โ€

โ€œWhat do you think of her?โ€ Miranda asked.

Mindy thought for a moment and said, โ€œSheโ€™s still very professional.โ€

Miranda smiled. โ€œCan you find the contract tonight and show it to me?โ€

โ€œSure. But why?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m just curious. Is it okay if I look at it?โ€

โ€œOf course! You can see anything of mine.โ€

โ€œHeheโ€ฆ Mom, youโ€™re the best. And can you send me copies of the novels youโ€™ve written over the years?โ€

Mindy was surprised. โ€œThose are just practice drafts. Why do you want to read them?โ€

โ€œWell, having a writer mom is pretty cool. I want to read your work so I can talk about it if anyone asks. I donโ€™t want them to think Iโ€™m lying!โ€

As a child, Miranda had really wanted to read her momโ€™s famous books, โ€œMurder Weaponโ€ and โ€œThe Deserted School.โ€ But her mom always said they were โ€œtoo violent,โ€ โ€œnot for kids,โ€ and โ€œbetter to read after youโ€™re 18.โ€ By the time Miranda turned 18, she wasnโ€™t interested anymore and never read them. It wasnโ€™t until after college, while waiting for Hansel to come home, that she finally read those books.

She had to admit that her mother was amazing at writing suspense. The way the stories were put together, with all the twists and turns, was perfect. No wonder those books were still bestsellers.

But in the last ten years, her mother hadnโ€™t published any new suspense novels. Miranda found this odd but hadnโ€™t asked why.

Now, seeing her motherโ€™s editor dressed in fancy clothes and carrying an expensive handbag, Miranda began to understand. How could a publishing editor afford such luxury? What kind of publishing house would make that much money? Why didnโ€™t she know about this before?
