Chapter 140

โ€œOh my! It really is you, Miranda!โ€ Karen Lardenโ€™s loud, surprised voice rang out from the doorway. โ€œI almost didnโ€™t recognize you!โ€

Karen, their boisterous neighbor, was known for her gossiping. Her husband also taught at Earnest High, and they had moved into the staff quarters the same year as Mirandaโ€™s family.

Upon seeing Miranda, Karen rushed over, scrutinizing her from head to toe. โ€œWow! Look at you! They say big cities change people, but this is incredible. Youโ€™ve really made a name for yourself!โ€

Miranda was speechless.

Karen continued, โ€œLook at your outfit, your figure, your clothes, and those shoes! Youโ€™re so stylish!โ€ She chattered cheerfully, โ€œMiranda, itโ€™s wonderful to see youโ€™ve done so well in Elgerson City! I heard you know some important peopleโ€”could you help my younger sister meet someone influential?โ€

Miranda looked puzzled. โ€œHelp her meet whom?โ€

Karen leaned in, lowering her voice conspiratorially. โ€œA rich man! My sisterโ€™s young and pretty, only twenty-two. She could use a chance to meet someone successful.โ€

Mirandaโ€™s expression darkened. โ€œMrs. Larden, youโ€™re mistaken. Iโ€™m not involved in that sort of thing and have no connections to offer.โ€

Karen looked surprised. โ€œBut Miranda, weโ€™re neighbors. If youโ€™ve become so successful, shouldnโ€™t you help others? Itโ€™s only right to share your good fortune.โ€

Mirandaโ€™s frustration was evident, though she managed a tight smile. โ€œI canโ€™t help with that, Mrs. Larden. Youโ€™re expecting far too much of me.โ€

Seeing Mirandaโ€™s refusal, Karenโ€™s smile vanished. โ€œOh, look at her. Now that sheโ€™s successful, she thinks sheโ€™s too good for everyone! I was just joking. What good girl would get involved with those kinds of peopleโ€ฆโ€

โ€œMrs. Larden, watch your language!โ€ Lionel interjected angrily. He tossed his bike aside and quickly stepped in front of Miranda, protectively. His face was red with anger, and his eyes blazed. โ€œYou can say what you want, but you shouldnโ€™t spread lies! My daughter is pure and innocent. Itโ€™s you whoโ€™s spreading garbage!โ€

โ€œOh, Iโ€™m spreading garbage?โ€ Karen snapped back, her longstanding animosity toward the Suttons boiling over. โ€œEveryone around here knows your daughter hasnโ€™t been home for years and is living with a rich man. Itโ€™s not just me talking. Go ahead, try to stop everyone from gossiping!โ€

โ€œYouโ€”โ€ Lionel sputtered, furious, his face crimson and chest heaving. โ€œYouโ€™re just spreading lies!โ€

โ€œEnough! You think you can silence everyone? How hypocritical!โ€ Karen glared at Miranda. โ€œWhat kind of respectable girl dresses like that? Always trying to attract men. Itโ€™s disgusting!โ€

Lionelโ€™s face flushed a deeper red. โ€œYouโ€”get outโ€”โ€ He clutched his chest, struggling to breathe.

โ€œDad!โ€ Miranda quickly administered his blood pressure medication.

Turning back to Karen, Mirandaโ€™s eyes were icy. โ€œI tried to be polite, considering weโ€™re neighbors, but since youโ€™ve come to my door and insulted me, my politeness is over.โ€

Miranda grabbed a damp mop from the corner and swung it at Karen.

Karen screamed, โ€œSheโ€™s hitting me! Sheโ€™s hitting me!โ€

Karen tried to dodge, but most of the dirty mop water splashed onto her.

Miranda said, โ€œOh, I just used this to clean the bathroom. Itโ€™s not even rinsed yet. Perfect timing!โ€

Karenโ€™s face paled as she seemed to register the filth. โ€œYouโ€”little brat! Youโ€™re horrible!โ€
