Chapter 199

Soon, the dishes arrived. Silas caught the scent of the food, instantly piquing his appetite. He picked up a piece of Cajun chicken; the tender meat dripped with sauce.

โ€œThis is delicious!โ€ he exclaimed. โ€œI havenโ€™t had such authentic Cajun chicken in ages. We definitely made the right choice coming here today.โ€

Bryan, intrigued, took a piece. โ€œItโ€™s really good! Lizzy, you should try some.โ€

โ€œNo, Iโ€™m on a diet.โ€

Bryan quickly retracted his fork, placing the chicken back on his plate and laughing. โ€œAlright, then. When youโ€™re not dieting, we can come back, just the two of us.โ€

Elizabeth rolled her eyes. โ€œWho said Iโ€™d come with you?โ€

Playful banter continued at their end of the table. Across from them, a cheerful Sandy glanced at Miranda curiously.

โ€œMiranda, I havenโ€™t asked yetโ€”how old are you? If youโ€™re starting your first year of graduate school in September, you must beโ€ฆ what, twenty-two or twenty-three?โ€ Sandy asked casually.

Miranda replied equally casually, unconcerned. โ€œNo, Iโ€™m twenty-six.โ€

The othersโ€™ reactions, however, were more nuanced. Twenty-six and just starting graduate school?

Bryan glanced at Paul, who remained calm, eating unhurriedly, as if he knew something.

Elizabeth raised an eyebrow, offering her first smile since sitting down. โ€œStarting grad school at twenty-six? How hard did you have to work for that? How many tries did it take?โ€

Bryan nudged her under the table, silently warning, โ€œBe careful; this is someone Dr. Jefferson brought in.โ€

Elizabeth glared at him. It was a clear โ€œMind your own business!โ€

Miranda answered calmly, โ€œI only took the exam once. Both rounds of interviews were straightforward.โ€

โ€œReally?โ€ Elizabeth scoffed, clearly skeptical. โ€œIf it was that easy, why didnโ€™t you take the exam right after undergrad? Why wait until now? Who knows how many times you actually took it?โ€

Miranda replied, โ€œAfter graduating, due to certain reasons, I forfeited my eligibility for a combined masterโ€™s and doctorate program. I regret it now, so I decided to retake the postgraduate admission exam. Is there a problem with that?โ€

โ€œPfft! Thatโ€™s absurd! Since when does Bedford College offer combined masterโ€™s and doctorate programs outside of the medical fields?โ€

Elizabeth had chosen to study abroad for her masterโ€™s because she couldnโ€™t get into a combined program at Bedford College. Except for medical fields, Bedford College didnโ€™t offer such a pathway. Now, someone claimed to have had the opportunity for a combined program at Bedford College but gave it up? What a blatant lie!

Miranda said calmly, โ€œJust because you donโ€™t know, doesnโ€™t mean it doesnโ€™t exist.โ€

Elizabeth laughed. Even now, Miranda wouldnโ€™t admit itโ€”she wouldn't believe it until she saw proof!

โ€œDr. Quinton, you work at Bedford College. Do you know of any combined masterโ€™s and doctorate programs outside the medical fields?โ€

Silas hesitated. โ€œAs far as I knowโ€”and I emphasize, this is only as far as I knowโ€”combined masterโ€™s and doctorate programs are mostly in medical fields. Other disciplines usually donโ€™t offer them.โ€

โ€œHow about that?โ€ Elizabeth raised an eyebrow, glancing at Miranda.

While Elizabeth showed open satisfaction, Miranda remained calm. โ€œIt wasnโ€™t a combined masterโ€™s and doctorate program; it was a combined bachelorโ€™s, masterโ€™s, and doctorate program.โ€

Silas paused, surprised.

Elizabeth sneered. โ€œWhatโ€™s the difference? Now youโ€™re saying it was a combined bachelorโ€™s, masterโ€™s, and doctorate program? Your story keeps getting more and more exaggerated.โ€
