Listen to this chapter:

โ€œIf you donโ€™t want to wait, you can leave. Itโ€™s not like anyoneโ€™s itching to see you.โ€ Winter smirked. โ€œHow do you expect anyone to help you with that attitude?โ€

Zach took a deep breath and felt the weight of the pressure bearing down on him. He knew she practiced Taekwondo; if he upset her, he would be the one to suffer.

โ€œCalm down, okay?โ€ He forced a smile. โ€œI told you itโ€™s an emergency. Since youโ€™re so relaxed about this, I definitely have something planned.โ€

โ€œCut to the chase,โ€ Winter said, glancing into his car. โ€œBy the wayโ€ฆ do you have any cigarettes left?โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œJust give me one.โ€

With a resigned sigh, Zach returned to his car and grabbed a cigarette and lighter to hand to her.

Winter didnโ€™t take it. Instead, she crossed her arms, looked at him, and smiled ambiguously.

โ€œFine.โ€ He nodded. โ€œIโ€™m not on the hunt for a date, but Iโ€™ve found myself dealing with a drill sergeant.โ€ As he spoke, he bent down and lit a cigarette for her.

It was the first time he had ever done that for a woman, and it was the first time he had seen someone smoke with such grace.

โ€œLetโ€™s hear it. Whatโ€™s going on?โ€ Winter exhaled a smoke ring. The white mist swirled upward, slowly blurring her features.

Zach said, โ€œMy mom caught wind of us supposedly dating. Sheโ€™s insisting I bring you home to meet her. I just got the ultimatum.โ€

โ€œWe agreed that we would help each other out, providing cover for one another, while keeping our own lives separate and not interfering with each other. You remember that?โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ Winter replied with a nod.

โ€œIโ€™ve already dealt with your mom for you, so now itโ€™s your turn to help me.โ€

โ€œSure,โ€ Winter replied confidently. โ€œItโ€™s just meeting the parents, right? Donโ€™t worry, Iโ€™ve got your back.โ€

Zach hesitated before asking, โ€œReally?โ€ He sounded doubtful.

โ€œBut I have a small request.โ€

โ€œI knew it. Whatโ€™s the request? Let me hear it,โ€ he replied.

โ€œI need to borrow your car for a couple of days.โ€ Winter moved closer, with one hand holding the cigarette and the other tapping the hood twice.

Zachโ€™s heart missed a beat. โ€œHey, be careful! Donโ€™t break it.โ€

โ€œDeal or no deal?โ€ Winter asked.

โ€œFine.โ€ He tossed her the keys. โ€œJust two days, okay?โ€ That was his limit.

Winter caught the keys and weighed them in her hand. โ€œThanks. Text me the details, like the time and place. Also, what does your mom look for in her future daughter-in-law? Long hair or short? What kind of dressing style does she like?โ€

โ€œIs this really necessary?โ€

โ€œOf course.โ€ She raised an eyebrow. โ€œI take my work seriously.โ€

Winter finished her cigarette and stubbed it out on the utility pole. Then, she tossed it perfectly into the trash can with a flick. Zach couldnโ€™t tear his eyes away.

โ€œCome here.โ€ She raised her chin.

โ€œWhy?โ€ he asked, but he obediently stepped closer.

โ€œPut your hand on my shoulder.โ€

โ€œIs that really okay? Hehโ€ฆโ€ As soon as he said that, his hand was already on her shoulder.

Seeing that he didnโ€™t hold back, Winterโ€™s lips twitched. โ€œWhat do you call me?โ€

โ€œWinter Jefferson?โ€ he said.

โ€œWrong,โ€ she responded.

โ€œSweetheart?โ€

โ€œWrong,โ€ Winter replied.

โ€œBabe?โ€

โ€œZach, donโ€™t you find that repulsive?โ€

โ€œFirecracker?โ€ Zach said.

โ€œDo you want a punch? Call me properly.โ€

โ€œWinter.โ€

โ€œNow thatโ€™s more like it,โ€ she said.

Zach scratched his nose. โ€œBut I didnโ€™t say that.โ€

Winter suddenly realized what he meant.

They both turned to see Miranda with a bag in hand at the alley entrance. She stared at them in shock.
