โIf you donโt want to wait, you can leave. Itโs not like anyoneโs itching to see you.โ Winter smirked. โHow do you expect anyone to help you with that attitude?โ
Zach took a deep breath and felt the weight of the pressure bearing down on him. He knew she practiced Taekwondo; if he upset her, he would be the one to suffer.
โCalm down, okay?โ He forced a smile. โI told you itโs an emergency. Since youโre so relaxed about this, I definitely have something planned.โ
โCut to the chase,โ Winter said, glancing into his car. โBy the wayโฆ do you have any cigarettes left?โ
โWhy?โ
โJust give me one.โ
With a resigned sigh, Zach returned to his car and grabbed a cigarette and lighter to hand to her.
Winter didnโt take it. Instead, she crossed her arms, looked at him, and smiled ambiguously.
โFine.โ He nodded. โIโm not on the hunt for a date, but Iโve found myself dealing with a drill sergeant.โ As he spoke, he bent down and lit a cigarette for her.
It was the first time he had ever done that for a woman, and it was the first time he had seen someone smoke with such grace.
โLetโs hear it. Whatโs going on?โ Winter exhaled a smoke ring. The white mist swirled upward, slowly blurring her features.
Zach said, โMy mom caught wind of us supposedly dating. Sheโs insisting I bring you home to meet her. I just got the ultimatum.โ
โWe agreed that we would help each other out, providing cover for one another, while keeping our own lives separate and not interfering with each other. You remember that?โ
โYes,โ Winter replied with a nod.
โIโve already dealt with your mom for you, so now itโs your turn to help me.โ
โSure,โ Winter replied confidently. โItโs just meeting the parents, right? Donโt worry, Iโve got your back.โ
Zach hesitated before asking, โReally?โ He sounded doubtful.
โBut I have a small request.โ
โI knew it. Whatโs the request? Let me hear it,โ he replied.
โI need to borrow your car for a couple of days.โ Winter moved closer, with one hand holding the cigarette and the other tapping the hood twice.
Zachโs heart missed a beat. โHey, be careful! Donโt break it.โ
โDeal or no deal?โ Winter asked.
โFine.โ He tossed her the keys. โJust two days, okay?โ That was his limit.
Winter caught the keys and weighed them in her hand. โThanks. Text me the details, like the time and place. Also, what does your mom look for in her future daughter-in-law? Long hair or short? What kind of dressing style does she like?โ
โIs this really necessary?โ
โOf course.โ She raised an eyebrow. โI take my work seriously.โ
Winter finished her cigarette and stubbed it out on the utility pole. Then, she tossed it perfectly into the trash can with a flick. Zach couldnโt tear his eyes away.
โCome here.โ She raised her chin.
โWhy?โ he asked, but he obediently stepped closer.
โPut your hand on my shoulder.โ
โIs that really okay? Hehโฆโ As soon as he said that, his hand was already on her shoulder.
Seeing that he didnโt hold back, Winterโs lips twitched. โWhat do you call me?โ
โWinter Jefferson?โ he said.
โWrong,โ she responded.
โSweetheart?โ
โWrong,โ Winter replied.
โBabe?โ
โZach, donโt you find that repulsive?โ
โFirecracker?โ Zach said.
โDo you want a punch? Call me properly.โ
โWinter.โ
โNow thatโs more like it,โ she said.
Zach scratched his nose. โBut I didnโt say that.โ
Winter suddenly realized what he meant.
They both turned to see Miranda with a bag in hand at the alley entrance. She stared at them in shock.
