The sudden flood of memories caught Miranda off guard. Was she really the one who had stubbornly grabbed his collar and refused to let go?
Facing Paulโs teasing gaze, she felt so embarrassed she wished the ground would swallow her up.
โRemember now?โ Paul asked with an amused tone.
โSorry, Iโฆโ She started, her voice trailing off.
โDo you even need to ask? Of course not. Who would want their head knocked? Iโm not a drum, and you said yourself that getting hit too much would make someone stupid,โ he said, dissolving half of her embarrassment with a single line.
โThen why did you hit my head?โ she muttered under her breath while sulking. As she recalled that part, earlier fragments of the memory became clearerโhe had started it.
Paul straightened up, speaking earnestly, โIโll say it again. You can drink, but donโt overdo it.โ
โUh-huh.โ Miranda nodded obediently like a scolded child, not daring to disagree.
โWhat are you two chatting about?โ Lionel asked, returning after washing his hands and taking a gulp of pear soup.
Paul took a bite of his cobbler with a faint smile. โWe were just talking about drinkingโฆโ
โOh, right! Speaking of that, Paul, why donโt you stay for lunch? We can have a little drink together. You were telling me about that new nuclear power technology last timeโit was fascinating. Letโs continue that conversation today!โ Lionel suggested.
Instead of agreeing right away, Paul turned to Miranda. โWhat do you think?โ
โWโWeโd better not drink,โ she stammered anxiously. Drinking caused nothing but trouble! She added, โYouโve got to go to the lab this afternoon, remember? Itโs best not to drink. And Dad, you shouldnโt either. A meal will do.โ
Lionel nodded. โAlright then, Paul canโt drink. I guess weโll have a little on our own.โ
โOh?โ Paul raised an eyebrow. โDoes Miranda enjoy drinking?โ
โShe does! She even said yesterday sheโd have a drink with me, but her mother stopped her,โ Lionel replied.
Mirandaโs scalp tingled with discomfort, thinking, โDad, did you not notice I was winking for you to stop!โ
โBut sheโs always been a sensible kid,โ Lionel quickly added, as if recalling something. โShe rarely drinks, just a sip now and then. Last time was an exception.โ
Mirandaโs face flushed with embarrassment.
Paul chuckled, nodding thoughtfully, โYes, sheโs always been quite measured and responsible.โ
โYes, she isโฆโ Lionel beamed with fatherly pride, grinning foolishly at the compliment.
At noon, Lionel took charge of cooking again. Quick and efficient, he soon prepared a table full of dishes, all different from the last time.
At the dining table, Lionel said, โPaul, eat up! Donโt be shy.โ He encouraged, then glanced at Miranda. โWhy didnโt you grab a glass? Let me get oneโโ
โDad! No, waitโโ Miranda quickly stopped him.
โHuh?โ Lionel was puzzled.
โAlcohol isnโt good for our health, letโs skip it this time,โ she insisted.
Lionel looked at her with an expression that seemed to say, โYou canโt be serious.โ They had just talked about having a drink together privately!
Miranda straightened up. โIโve suddenly realized my previous mindset wasnโt very mature. Iโve finally woken up. Dad, you shouldnโt drink. Letโs all not drink.โ
Lionel stood there, speechless.
โMom doesnโt like it when you drink, right?โ Miranda turned to Mindy for support.
Lionel sighed. What a traitor!
After lunch, Paul instinctively rolled up his sleeves, offering to help clear the table.
Lionel quickly urged him to leave it. โNo need, leave it, leave itโIโll handle it.โ
Paul replied, โYou didnโt treat me as an outsider when you invited me for lunch, so donโt start now.โ
โUmโฆโ
Before Lionel could argue, Paul had already gathered the dishes and carried them into the kitchen. Mindy watched him with surprise as he walked away.
โWell, what do you think? Surprising, huh? Not many men are as diligent as Paul,โ Lionel said proudly. โItโs no wonder he and I get along so well.โ
