Chapter 0379

That night, Mirandaโ€™s bank account suddenly showed an extra two million. When she received the balance notification, she froze for a moment. Then she immediately threw off her covers, got up, and ran to the next room. โ€œMom, why did you transfer money to me?โ€ she asked.

Mindy and Lionel exchanged a glance, as if they had expected this reaction. โ€œYour dad and I discussed it. You already spent so much money buying that villa. We couldnโ€™t help before, but now that we can, we thought weโ€™d contribute a bit. Itโ€™s not enough, but itโ€™s something.โ€ โ€œI donโ€™t need the money!โ€ โ€œI know,โ€ Mindy replied gently, smiling. โ€œI didnโ€™t transfer it because you needed it. The villa is where your dad and I live now. Since we have some extra funds, itโ€™s only right that we contribute to the cost.โ€ โ€œBut weโ€™re family. Thereโ€™s no need to be overly concerned about these things.โ€ โ€œI agree,โ€ Mindy countered. โ€œSo why are you trying to be that way with us?โ€

Miranda was momentarily speechless. โ€œButโ€”โ€ โ€œNo more โ€˜buts,โ€™โ€ Lionel interrupted. โ€œListen to your mom. Besides, if we need money later, would you refuse to help us out?โ€ โ€œโ€ฆNo.โ€ โ€œExactly. Now, itโ€™s getting late, and we have a train to catch tomorrow. Go get some sleep.โ€ โ€œAlright, but Iโ€™ll hold onto the money for now. If you need it, just let me know.โ€ โ€œOkay, okay, go on now.โ€

Miranda finally turned back to her room. Mindy sighed. โ€œThat silly girl is probably overthinking again.โ€ Lionel said, โ€œHonestly, Mimi probably doesnโ€™t care about the moneyโ€ฆโ€ He had a sense that their daughter had a substantial amount saved, though he never asked for specifics. It had to be at least in the eight-figure range. Mindy suddenly grew serious. โ€œWhatever she has, itโ€™s hers. What we give, no matter how little, is a gesture from us as her parents. Itโ€™s not about how much or whether she needs it.โ€ โ€œWe couldnโ€™t give her a villa when she was young. Now, weโ€™re benefiting from her hard work and living in such a nice house, but none of this should be taken for granted.โ€ Lionel sighed, โ€œI feel so uselessโ€ฆโ€ โ€œBut youโ€™re not.โ€ โ€œHoneyโ€ฆโ€ Lionel felt a bit emotional. โ€œWithout you, I couldnโ€™t have had a child on my own. Thereโ€™d be no Mรญmi.โ€

The next morning at nine, Miranda took her parents to the train station. She stood by the gate, watching them walk away until they were out of sight before she left. When she got back home, she happened to see Paul holding a stack of papers, about to knock on her door. โ€œDr. Jefferson.โ€ Miranda climbed the last step and stood face to face with him. โ€œIs your dad home?โ€ Paul asked. โ€œMy parents left today. Were you looking for him?โ€ โ€œHe asked me to help him find some research papers. I printed them all out.โ€ He patted the stack in his hand. โ€œOh? They just leftโ€ฆโ€ โ€œNo problem. I have an electronic copy. Iโ€™ll send it to you, and you can forward it to him.โ€ โ€œThank you, Dr. Jefferson. I really appreciate it!โ€ โ€œYouโ€™re welcome. Your dad isโ€ฆ quite an interesting person.โ€ Except for one thingโ€”his insistence on becoming Paulโ€™s brother.

With her parents gone, Mirandaโ€™s life returned to its routine. She spent her days shuttling between home and the library. Time flew by, and before she knew it, September arrivedโ€”the start of her graduate school.
