Listen to this chapter:

Mirandaโ€™s words insulted not only Hank but also Sophie and the rest of her group.

โ€œSo, youโ€™re that older graduate student?โ€ Sophie finally gave Miranda a glance, her eyes filled with disdain as she sneered, โ€œYou certainly have a sharp tongue. I wonder if your abilities match your words.โ€

Hank chimed in, โ€œExactly! What kind of normal student waits until theyโ€™re nearly 30 to get in?โ€

โ€œEither your brainโ€™s messed up, or youโ€™re just not that talented. Has the bar for academia dropped this low?โ€

Miranda remained calm, her expression unchanged. โ€œWhether thereโ€™s something wrong with my brain isnโ€™t for you to judge, but as for youโ€“thereโ€™s definitely something wrong up there.โ€

Sebastian, who had been silent until now, added, โ€œItโ€™s probably rabiesโ€“biting everyone he comes across.โ€ He then turned his gaze to Sophie. โ€œIf I were the owner, Iโ€™d put down a disobedient dog like this before it bites back.โ€

A chill ran down Sophieโ€™s spine.

Hank yelled at the top of his lungs, โ€œWho are you calling a dog? Youโ€™re the ones who are dogs! Youโ€™re all sick!โ€

Miranda replied coolly, โ€œWhoeverโ€™s barking, thatโ€™s who. Dr. Young, letโ€™s go. Thereโ€™s no need to waste our time with these strays.โ€

Christine, who had been fuming, suddenly felt a sense of calm wash over her. โ€œAlright,โ€ she agreed.

The group of four started to walk away.

Just then, Sophie called out, โ€œThe departmental research funds have been officially approved. Youโ€™ve gone years without producing a decent paper. If I were you, Iโ€™d step down and make room for someone more capable.โ€

Christine froze momentarily.

โ€œResources should go to those who can actually make use of them,โ€ Sophie continued. โ€œNot to those who just coast along, resting on their laurels. Donโ€™t you agree, Dr. Young?โ€

Miranda turned back and responded icily, โ€œWhether itโ€™s wasted or not isnโ€™t up to you to decide. Academic achievements will ultimately prove who truly deserves those resources.โ€

โ€œWell said!โ€ Sophie applauded sarcastically. โ€œThen Iโ€™ll eagerly await seeing what kind of academic results you and your team produce.โ€

As Mirandaโ€™s group left, Hank sneered, โ€œWith Joll on our side, you guys are nothing!โ€

The next day was the opening ceremony.

Everyone was seated according to their department. Naturally, Miranda, Madison, and Sebastian ended up next to each other.

Following tradition, the school leaders gave their speeches first, followed by the departmental leaders, and then the student representatives.

The trio was almost dozing off from boredom when a commotion broke out at the back of the academyโ€™s section. They heard whispers spreading rapidly.

โ€œDid I just see Joli walk by?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s definitely him!โ€

โ€œBut isnโ€™t he supposed to be incredibly busy? Why would he attend the opening ceremony?โ€

โ€œWho knows? Maybe heโ€™s here just to check things out?โ€

โ€œJust to check things outโ€ฆ You think the walking SCI paper has that much free time?โ€

โ€œThe walking SCI paper? Whatโ€™s that supposed to mean?โ€

โ€œYou seriously donโ€™t know?โ€

โ€œUhโ€ฆ Know what?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s Joli Clifford, Dr. Xanderโ€™s protรฉgรฉ. He got into Bedford College as the top science student of his year. He started publishing papers during his undergrad. In his final year, he managed to get three SCI papers published in one go, which led to his direct admission to grad school. Every year since, heโ€™s produced outstanding academic work.โ€

โ€œHonestly, you could say he carries half the academic reputation of our Faculty of Bioinformatics. Dr. Xander values him highly, and even the department heads treat him with warmth and respect.โ€

This was the second time in just two days that Miranda had heard the name โ€œJollโ€.
