The car stopped at the entrance of an alley, and Miranda got out. Sebastian and Madison had already gotten out ahead of her.
Miranda walked in the direction of her apartment. Illuminated by the gentle moonlight, a few sparse stars dotted the night sky. The wind wasnโt cooling as it carried the lingering heat of summer.
Suddenly, she stopped in her tracks. Leaning against a tree at the entrance of her apartment building, a man stood with his hands in his pockets. The moment he saw Miranda, he instinctively straightened up and smiled at her.
โWhatโs the matter? Are you surprised to see me?โ Sam walked up to her.
Miranda was stunned for a couple of seconds. โA little.โ
โHave you gotten used to the new semester?โ
โYeah.โ
โIs your schedule packed?โ
His question hit Miranda right in a sore spot. It was more than packedโher schedule was overwhelming!
Sam shrugged. โI already know the answer by your expression.โ
โAm I that obvious?โ Miranda touched her face.
โNot really.โ
โThen how did you guess?โ
Sam replied, โIโve got sharp eyes.โ
Mirandaโs lips twitched with mirth.
He continued, โItโs too hot outside, but I know you wonโt invite me up to your place. How about we find a cooler place to sit?โ
โSam is rather self-aware,โ Miranda thought.
โI bet youโre thinking that Iโm a tactful guy who is quite self-aware,โ Sam quipped.
Miranda was taken aback.
โLooks like I guessed right again, didnโt I?โ
She didnโt know how to respond.
The two headed to the same cafรฉ they had visited before that was right across the street. It had air conditioning and was nice and cool.
However, Sam seemed out of place in the casual atmosphere of the cafรฉ. Dressed in a business suit, he drew plenty of attention from others in the shop.
Miranda asked, โWhat do you want to drink? My treat.โ
โOreo latteโฆโ
โHuh?โ
โWhy are you looking at me like that?โ Sam rubbed his chin thoughtfully.
Miranda fell silent for two seconds before ordering at the counter, โTwo Oreo lattes, less ice with added sugar.โ
As soon as she spoke, Sam chuckled softly. โSo, you like that too. Does this mean that weโre fated?โ
Miranda replied, โItโs just a coincidence.โ
Sam merely smiled. What were the odds that such coincidences could happen?
Over the years, he hadnโt figured out Mirandaโs food preferences completely, but he certainly knew her better than Hansel.
Soon, the lattes were ready. They sat down to chat while sipping their drinks.
Miranda asked, โAlright, what did you want to talk about?โ
โCanโt I just come to see you for no reason?โ Sam raised an eyebrow.
She hesitated for a moment before speaking, โI donโt think you would do that.โ
If Sam merely wanted to chat, he wouldnโt have suggested finding a cooler place to talk. Moreover, he wouldnโt have shown up outside her building at night without a reason.
Even if he had come just to see her, Sam would have found a suitable excuse without appearing at her doorstep unannounced.
โSo, who was the person who showed up unannounced?โ A sharp glint appeared in Samโs eyes.
Miranda was at a loss for words. Was this the reason why he came?
โDid Hansel come to see you recently?โ
Miranda didnโt want to answer his question.
However, Sam wasnโt ready to drop the subject. He gave her a meaningful smile and said, โLet me guess. First, he definitely showed up, and it wasnโt at night.โ
She didnโt respond.
โI bet he brought a bouquet of flowers too.โ
Miranda was taken aback at this point.
Sam continued, โHe definitely didnโt show up at the entrance of your apartment. It wasnโt at night, so it mustโve been during the day. Since itโs during the day, you would be on campus most of the time, soโฆ Did Hansel come to look for you on campus?โ
Sam nailed everything completely!
Miranda couldnโt help but laugh. โYouโre so good at guessing. Why donโt you become a fortune teller?โ
โIโm not interested in other peopleโs destiny.โ
She quipped, โThen, what are you interested in?โ
