When fate plays its hand

Listen to this chapter:

The Sutton men had impressive genetics, and Lionel was no exception. He was tall, broad-shouldered, and even in middle age, he hadnโ€™t put on much weight. He tried on several suits, and each one fit perfectly.

โ€œHoney, which one do you think looks best?โ€ Lionel asked Mindy.

Miranda instinctively turned her gaze to her mother as well.

Mindy paused for a moment, then said, โ€œThey all look great.โ€

โ€œSo how do I choose?โ€

Mindy replied, โ€œNo need to choose. Weโ€™ll take them all.โ€

โ€œNo, no. Thatโ€™s too much! How much is all this going to cost? I only need one suit; Iโ€™ve got plenty at home.โ€ But Mindy had already taken out her bank card and handed it to the sales assistant. โ€œWeโ€™ll take all three suits, please. Could you wrap them up for us? Thank you.โ€

โ€œMy pleasure!โ€ the sales assistant replied cheerfully as she headed off to finalize the purchase.

Lionel, feeling a bit embarrassed, tugged at Mindyโ€™s sleeve and said, โ€œHoney, thatโ€™s too expensive. Just one suit costs a few thousand.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t worry, Iโ€™m buying,โ€ Mindy replied gently. โ€œI just received a royalty payment yesterday. It was over 100 thousand.โ€

Lionel was stunned. โ€œTโ€“That much?โ€

โ€œYup.โ€ She nodded playfully.

โ€œWow, honey, youโ€™re amazing!โ€ Lionel exclaimed, his eyes filled with admiration.

Mindyโ€™s cheeks turned rosy from this.

Just then, Miranda cleared her throat loudly, reminding them that she was still there. Could the two of them dial it down a bit?

Lionel was quick and decisive when he shopped, but Mindy took her time in the womenโ€™s section on the second floor. She browsed through several stores without finding anything that truly satisfied her.

Some dresses she dismissed with just a glance, not even bothering to try them on.

Miranda suddenly remembered a small, niche Franelia brand in the mall. It was so obscure that its store was tucked away in a far corner, well away from the main elevator.

Despite its out-of-the-way location, the clothes were beautiful. As soon as Mindy stepped inside, her eyes lit up.

Without needing Mirandaโ€™s help to choose, Mindy showed her own sense of style. She picked out two dresses to try on โ€“ one orange, one blue, each with a different cut but both flattering her skin tone.

The skirts featured lace and embroidered details that gave them a touch of classic elegance, with innovative touches like lace cuffs and tassels on the bodice. Still, they lacked a certain something.

As Mindy continued browsing, her gaze suddenly stopped on a black dress displayed in the window. She couldnโ€™t take another step; it had captivated her completely.

The black dress was simpler in design compared to the previous two, with fewer embellishments.

Its monochrome color might have seemed a bit dull at first glance, but a white sash cinched at the waist added just the right touch, draping lightly and blending seamlessly with the black fabric.

It was a simple yet romantic, very Franelian design.

Susan, who rarely had the time to go shopping, happened to be out that day. She didnโ€™t stick to specific brands; instead, she chose to follow her instincts.

When she passed the same small boutique tucked away in the corner, the black dress in the window immediately caught her eye. Its understated design allowed the sash at the waist to stand out beautifully.

She entered the store and tried on several dresses, only to find that the black dress from earlier was still the most stunning.

Just as she was about to ask the sales assistant to wrap it up, she turned and saw that the very dress she had tried on was now being worn by another woman.

Susanโ€™s brow furrowed slightly.

The sales assistant, who was anticipating trouble, mentally braced herself for a confrontation. She was about to explain when she noticed Susan walking straight over to Mindy.

The sales assistant could already picture the drama that was about to unfold. After all, these two women, with their elegant attire and confident air, were clearly not ordinary customers.

Susan looked formidable and commanding, while Mindy exuded grace and sophistication. And if there was one thing that these high-society ladies despised the most, it was having the same outfit as...
