Chapter 222: A Child for Two Billion

Upon arriving at Rainsworth Manor, Cecilia breakfasted with Nathaniel. Shortly afterward, she received a text from Elena, requesting a meeting to discuss important matters. Cecilia informed Nathaniel, who firmly advised, "Just say no if you don't want to go." Unsure of his sincerity, Cecilia agreed to meet.

In the garden, Elena, in a traditional gown, was tending flowers. Noticing Cecilia, she delegated the task to her housekeeper, instructing, "Replace all those that didn't bloom." This, Cecilia understood, was a veiled reference to her childlessness. Remaining composed, they drove to their destination.

During the journey, Elena was unusually calm. "I recently saw an adorable child who remarkably resembles Nathaniel as a boy," she began, adding pointedly, "It's a shame he's not Nathaniel's." Cecilia's apprehension grew. "You should know our childlessness isn't solely my fault," she retorted, aware of Nathaniel's infrequent presence at home during their three-year marriage.

Elena shifted the conversation. "Has your relationship with Nathaniel improved?" she asked, her reliance on Stella clearly waning after witnessing a passionate embrace between Cecilia and Nathaniel. Hopeful, Elena pinned her hopes on Cecilia.

Cecilia nodded slightly. A flicker of joy crossed Elena's face, quickly masked. "I admit my past actions were wrong. If you bear Nathaniel's child, I promise to treat both you and the child well." The prospect of a grandson, it seemed, could alone humble the formidable heiress. Her tone softened considerably; taking Cecilia's hand, Elena declared sincerely, "I'll give you whatever you want."

Cecilia, sensing ulterior motives, withdrew her hand. "I can't make any promises," she stated firmly. Elena's smile faltered. "A child for two billion. What do you say?" she offered, adding, "A thorough checkup is essential, and a Rainsworth family member must assume responsibility after the birth." The implicationโ€”that the child should be shielded from Cecilia's hearing impairmentโ€”was unmistakable.

A wry smile touched Cecilia's lips. "Madam Elena, you misunderstand. I have sufficient funds for my lifestyle and can care for a child myself."

Elena attempted further persuasion, but their car reached a preschool gate. Seeing the familiar building, Cecilia was shocked. How did Elena know to be here? The children were dismissed early. As Cecilia exited the car, she spotted Jonathan. Overwhelmed with the urge to embrace him, she realized the potential repercussions if he called out to her and Elena overheard.
