Chapter 278: She Used To Love Me Deeply

Nathanielโ€™s screen displayed a message: "Thank you for your assistance. To be honest, I've needed collaboration lately. Also, I'm not sure why you inquired about my divorce, but I want to assure you that while my marriage wasn't perfect, it doesn't mean all marriages are doomed. If you're having marital issues, I hope you find a resolution. I wish you and your wife happiness."

A complex mix of emotions surged through Nathaniel as he read the lengthy message. He typed a response: "But it seems like she doesn't love me anymore. What should I do?"

Cecilia was startled by her ringing phone. It was a message from the contractor she'd worked with. She hadn't anticipated his marital problems, nor his candid response. She typed back: "Is there a misunderstanding between you two?"

Nathaniel paused, then carefully typed: "I wasn't good to her in the pastโ€ฆ" He quickly added: "She used to love me deeply," but deleted it. After all, Cecilia had never been the one he loved.

After a long silence, he finally sent: "I treated her poorly. Now, she's with someone else; they even have a child."

Cecilia couldn't believe she was speaking to Nathaniel. She replied: "I'm sorry, I don't know how to help you."

A quick reply came: "It's all right. I won't let her go, even if she doesn't love me."

Cecilia was about to reply when he logged off. She considered a comforting message when a knock came at her bedroom door. Nathaniel stood there. "Awake?" he asked. "Get up and have breakfast."

Cecilia quickly put away her phone. Nathaniel, noticing her subtle actions, asked pointedly, "Who were you texting?"

Cecilia rose, her expression unchanged, and lied, "Vivian." Nathaniel didn't press her.

After freshening up, Cecilia sat down to breakfast. Her appetite had increased, but meat made her nauseous. Unable to conceal her discomfort, she excused herself to the restroom and vomited.

After breakfast, Nathaniel helped her into several layers of clothing and draped his overcoat over her. "Where are we going?" Cecilia asked, feeling unwell.

"The car's warm. Get in first, and you won't feel cold," he replied gently.

Cecilia reluctantly entered the car. Recognizing the route, she realized where they were going. Half an hour later, they arrived at the Smith residence.

Cecilia was surprised Nathaniel had bought the house. It was immaculately clean, much as it had always been. The heating was on, making it comfortably warm.

"How did Stella agree to sell it to you?" Cecilia asked. She had tried to buy it back upon her return to Tudela, but Stella had refused, boasting, "Did you know? The first time I visited your house as a child, I swore this place would be mine one day."
