Chapter 290: The Crash
Due to his profession as a lawyer, Ernest was more meticulous than most. When the foreigners drove off, he secretly followed. Meanwhile, Nathaniel drove with Cecilia in the passenger seat.
Recalling Cecilia's trial testimony, Nathaniel solemnly asked, โDo you truly wish to divorce me?โ He knew the answer but needed to ask again.
โYes,โ Cecilia nodded. โAs long as youโre willing to divorce, I wonโt ask for anything. I just want my freedom.โ
Nathanielโs throat tightened. Instead of pressing further, he asked, โThe things you said in courtโฆ were they true?โ
After a pause, Cecilia replied, โThat doesnโt matter anymore, does it?โ She looked at him, then quickly added, โIf you refuse to divorce me, I will tell the world Iโve been with someone else.โ
Cecilia knew this was a terrible tactic. Nathaniel valued his reputation and wouldnโt tolerate anything that threatened his company.
โDo you know what happens to those who threaten me?โ Nathaniel asked calmly. โYears ago, a tycoon tried to blackmail me. He ended up in the river.โ
Cecilia remembered a period after their marriage when Nathaniel was often unhappy and prone to outbursts. His mood improved after she saw a news report about someone falling into the river one morning.
A flash of shock crossed Ceciliaโs eyes. She forced composure, saying, โAll I want is a divorce.โ
โBut I donโt want to,โ Nathaniel stated coldly.
Lost in their conversation, they were unaware of the large truck rapidly approaching. Nathaniel spotted it first and swerved, but it was too late. A deafening crash followed. Nathaniel shielded Cecilia with his body.
In that instant, Cecilia felt something splash her faceโblood. Everything was awash in red.
โNathanielโฆโ she whispered. He didnโt respond. โNathaniel!โ she cried.
The surroundings fell silent. The truck sped off. One of the occupants was identified as Simon, who lived overseas. Nathanielโs subordinate had previously apprehended one of Simonโs henchmen, leading to this act of revenge. Simon pursued Nathaniel back to Clusia.
Ernest arrived later to find Nathaniel and Ceciliaโs wrecked vehicle, the front window shattered. Nathaniel was unconscious; Cecilia had passed out from blood loss. He immediately called for police and an ambulance.
Beep! Beep! Beep! Cecilia had lost count of her hospital stays. The sound of surgical instruments echoed. She wanted to open her eyes but couldnโt. Car accidents were her greatest fear, due to her fatherโs death.
Why did this have to happen? She desperately wanted to see Nathaniel, but remained unconscious. She heard doctors murmuring, โThis is the Rainsworth Group CEO. We canโt let him die.โ
Nathaniel mustnโt die! If he did, she wouldn't know what to do.
