Chapter 309: Help Me Pick Out the Carrots

Cecilia descended the stairs quickly, responding to a loud noise from below. Finding Nathaniel's door shut, she decided against investigating, reasoning he would leave when ready.

The next day, Cecilia prepared breakfast, deliberately including carrots, knowing Nathaniel's aversion to themโ€”a trait shared by their son, Jonathan. After setting aside Martha's portion, Nathaniel emerged, revealing a large wound on his forehead, explaining the previous night's commotion.

Pretending not to notice, Cecilia announced breakfast. Nathaniel carefully navigated the furniture, wary of further mishaps. Anticipating his clumsiness, Cecilia guided him, preventing a collision with the wall. His embarrassed blush was evident.

His surprising grace at the table and agreeable demeanor surprised Cecilia. She regretted his memory loss, despite his past coldness. Offering him eggs, she was taken aback by his offer to help.

"You can't see; how could you help?" she asked.

His voice softened. "You don't have to work. You can move back to Daltonia Villa with Martha. I'll take care of you both."

Cecilia, nearly choking on her eggs, retorted, "I don't need your help. I can support myself."

Nathaniel presented a gold payroll card. Cecilia refused it, but he insisted. She dismissed the subject, urging him to eat, needing to compose music.

He ate, then frowned. "Ceciโ€ฆ could you do me a favor? I'm not fond of carrots. Could you help me pick them out?"

Cecilia complied, removing the carrots and returning his plate. "All right, it's ready to eat now."

His question, "Did you really pick them all out?" elicited a dismissive response. Cecilia left, instructing him to wash dishes.

His reactionโ€”silently finishing the eggs, carrots included, and washing the dishesโ€”was a stark contrast to his pre-amnesia self. The irony of a man accustomed to luxury performing such a task wasn't lost on Cecilia.

Upon returning to her room, Cecilia found Martha, the kitchen now filled with soapy bubbles.
