Chapter 379: Searched for Queenie
Cassandra's mother was a woman named Queenie Jamieson.
An hour later, Cecilia received information confirming she'd hired someone to investigate Cassandra. Because Cassandra was a public figure, details about her were readily available. Cecilia's primary concern was the exact nature of Cassandra's relationship with Paula. Muttering as she read, Cecilia learned, "Five years ago, Paula traveled abroad, where she met Cassandra's father. They fell in love and married, making her Cassandra's stepmother."
Stepmother... Cecilia recalled Paula repeatedly calling Cassandra her daughter during their conversation and found it hard to believe Paula was merely Cassandra's stepmother. She knew Paula well; if she could be so ruthless to her own biological daughter, she wouldn't treat a stepdaughter any better.
"What about her biological mother?" Cecilia asked.
The investigator replied, "Do you mean Queenie? Cassandra's father was a matrilocal son-in-law. After joining the Jamieson family, he and Queenie didn't get along. They divorced five years ago. Queenie only has Cassandra as her daughter, and she spoils her."
With no further information, Cecilia ended the call. The similarity between Cassandra's and Paula's dancing sparked an idea, though she hesitated to explore it further. She leaned back, resting.
Meanwhile, Nicholas received word that their collaboration was canceled. He didn't inquire further. Elena received similar news, much to her surprise. "Who could possibly offer a higher price than us?"
Her secretary shook his head. "When you mentioned collaborating with Ms. Cecille, I alerted other entertainment companies. No one dared compete with us."
"Find out who's so audacious," Elena instructed.
"Understood."
After returning to town, Cecilia visited Elliot before going home. Nathaniel hadn't returned, but she wasn't worried, spending her time chatting with Martha.
Outside the town hospital, Nathaniel and Mason sat in the car.
"Is the other child here?" Nathaniel asked.
"Yes, the children are identical. However, Eli is frail and has spent much time in the hospital," Mason replied.
"What's his illness?"
"Leukemia, it seems," Mason said, explaining that he'd arranged for a medical team when he brought Elliot to Tudela.
"Let's go back," Nathaniel said gravely.
"Okay."
On the way back, Nathaniel closed his eyes, the doctor's words echoing in his mind: "Mr. Rainsworth, judging by your treatment progress, your memory should be fully restored in less than a month."
One monthโฆ Nathaniel had noticed his memory improving, yet this recovery brought increasing discomfort. He arrived home unnoticed; Mason had to remind him. He opened his eyes and stepped out of the car.
From a distance, he heard a woman playing the piano. A voice echoed in his mind: "I've been mistaken. The person I truly love isn't you." A sharp pain pulsed in his head, forcing him to dismiss the thought.
Hearing the front door open, Cecilia descended from upstairs and saw Nathaniel.
"Why are you only just back?" she asked.
"I was working overtime," Nathaniel replied, technically not lying; he'd been busy establishing the new company. Approaching Cecilia, he asked, "Ceci, be honest. The child you're carrying isn't mine, is it?" His fragmented memories included distinct recollections of their intimate encounters.
Cecilia, instantly nervous, responded, "Of course not." Once his memory returned fully, he would discover the truth about the child's conception.
