Chapter 387: He Hit Me

After washing their hands, Elliot, feigning friendliness, guided a visibly upset Nathaniel to the dining table.

โ€œMr. Rainsworth, now that you canโ€™t see, do you often stumble?โ€ Elliot asked, his tone laced with mock innocence.

โ€œNo,โ€ Nathaniel replied curtly.

โ€œSo, youโ€™re not really blind then?โ€ Elliot continued, maintaining his pretense of harmless curiosity.

Nathaniel, patiently, responded, โ€œIโ€™ve memorized the path, so I donโ€™t fall.โ€

โ€œI see,โ€ Elliot said.

โ€œAll right, letโ€™s eat now and chat later,โ€ Cecilia interjected. "Eli always has so many questions."

As they sat, Elliotโ€™s eyes immediately fell upon the shredded carrots. He knew he could eat them without issue, unlike Jonathan. If I got Mommyโ€™s genes, then Jon definitely got our scumbag daddyโ€™s.

With a deliberate movement, Elliot transferred some shredded carrots to Nathanielโ€™s plate. โ€œMr. Rainsworth, you should eat more carrots. My teacher says theyโ€™re good for your eyes,โ€ he remarked, a subtle edge to his seemingly innocent comment.

Jonathan, sensing an opportunity, quickly added, โ€œEli, you silly boy, Mr. Rainsworth is already blind.โ€

Nathaniel was speechless.

โ€œWhat? Carrots donโ€™t help the blind?โ€ Elliot asked, feigning wide-eyed confusion.

The childrenโ€™s repeated use of "blind" echoed how people used to call Cecilia "deaf" in Nathaniel's presence.

Cecilia intervened gently but firmly. โ€œEli, you canโ€™t talk like that. Itโ€™s impolite.โ€ After all, Nathaniel was their biological father.

Noticing Cecilia's displeasure, Elliot focused on his meal, though his mind was already scheming. Heโ€™d continue provoking Nathaniel once his mother left the room.

Though blind, Nathaniel was keenly aware of the boys' mischief, especially Elliot's deliberate provocations. He didn't take it to heartโ€”a child's antics wouldn't faze himโ€”but he wouldn't tolerate bullying without response.

After dinner, Nathaniel asked Elliot, โ€œEli, could you escort me to my room?โ€

Elliotโ€™s eyes lit up. This was his perfect opportunity.

โ€œSure,โ€ he replied, winking at Jonathan before leading Nathaniel.

Once inside, Elliot searched for a stool, planning to trip Nathaniel. Before he could act, the door closed. He found himself hoisted into the air, dangling helplessly in Nathanielโ€™s grip.

โ€œMr. Rainsworth, what are you doing?โ€ Elliot asked, feigning innocence.

Nathaniel calmly asked, โ€œDo you know how I deal with naughty children?โ€

Nathaniel wouldn't harm Elliot, knowing about his health issues, but he could still make his point through intimidation. Elliot's thoughts raced. How dare you threaten me? Fine, Iโ€™ll tattle to Mommy later.

โ€œMr. Rainsworth, Iโ€™m a good boy,โ€ Elliot insisted.

Nathanielโ€™s lips curled into a faint smile. โ€œIs that so? Good kids donโ€™t tell lies.โ€

A light slap on the buttocks followed, a clear message. Because of his illness, Elliot had been cosseted his entire life and had never been spanked. The slap instantly enraged him. โ€œMommy! Mommy!โ€

Nathaniel let him call out and calmly set him down. Cecilia rushed in, concern etched on her face. โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong, darling?โ€

Elliot pointed accusingly. โ€œMr. Rainsworth hit me!โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ Cecilia gasped, inspecting him. โ€œWhere did he hit you?โ€

Elliot hesitated. I canโ€™t possibly tell Mommy he swatted me on the butt, can I? Besides, he was so gentle it didnโ€™t even hurt. Itโ€™d be embarrassing if Mommy checked and saw I was perfectly fine.
