Chapter 411: I Am Not Nicholas

Nathanielโ€™s expression remained unchanged, even as the silence lingered. Cecilia, attempting to ease the tension, asked, โ€œWerenโ€™t you supposed to be at work today?โ€

Nathanielโ€™s handsome features darkened. He hadnโ€™t left the house; there was no work to be done. โ€œThere was no need to work today,โ€ he replied curtly.

โ€œAll right then, get some rest,โ€ Cecilia said, rising.

Nathaniel blocked her path. โ€œIs that all you have to say?โ€ he demanded.

Ceciliaโ€™s thoughts drifted to the previous night. Sighing, she said, โ€œEnough. I have work to do now.โ€

As she turned to leave, Nathaniel pulled her into his embrace. His Adamโ€™s apple bobbed as he murmured intensely, โ€œCecilia, rememberโ€”Iโ€™m not Nicholas, and I could never be.โ€

Startled, Cecilia looked up, her eyes wide. โ€œDid you remember something?โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ he replied, his hand gently caressing her face. โ€œI donโ€™t like you mistaking me for someone else.โ€

Cecilia averted her gaze. โ€œI didnโ€™t mean toโ€ฆ it was a slip of the tongue,โ€ she murmured.

โ€œIs that so? It better be,โ€ Nathaniel responded sharply.

His phone rang, breaking the tension. While he answered, Cecilia slipped away and left the room, heading to the music room to compose. Nathanielโ€™s mood soured as he answered.

โ€œWhatโ€™s the matter?โ€ he asked curtly.

โ€œMr. Rainsworth, suspicious activity near your residence. We apprehended someone who confessed to being sent by Madam Elena,โ€ the bodyguard reported.

Nathanielโ€™s eyes narrowed. โ€œWhat was he supposed to do?โ€

โ€œHe was watching a child.โ€

Only Jon was there. Why Elenaโ€™s focus on him?

Nathaniel instructed, โ€œTake him back to the Rainsworth residence.โ€

โ€œUnderstood.โ€

At the residence, the wounded man was thrown before Elena, interrupting her flower arranging. A cold flicker crossed her eyes.

โ€œFound out? Did you get the hair?โ€ she demanded.

The man shook his head. โ€œI didnโ€™t get the chance.โ€

โ€œUseless!โ€ Elena snapped, throwing down her scissors.

The man trembled. โ€œMr. Nathaniel said not to send anyone again, or elseโ€ฆ or elseโ€ฆโ€

โ€œOr else what?โ€ Elenaโ€™s expression froze.

โ€œOr heโ€™ll turn his back on his family,โ€ the man whispered.

Elenaโ€™s face darkened. โ€œGet out.โ€

Unease settled over her. Since last seeing Cecilia and the child, sheโ€™d been discreetly watching Ceciliaโ€™s residence. Jonathan had stayed with Cecilia for days, then moved in with Vivian. This fueled her curiosity.

Sheโ€™d initially investigated whether Jonathan and Cecilia were related, but hadn't obtained hair or blood samples.

โ€œMrs. Rainsworth, no need to distress yourself,โ€ her secretary suggested. โ€œWith Mr. Nicholas in charge, perhaps we could bring back Mr. Nathaniel and Ms. Smith. Truths will come to light.โ€

โ€œI want Nathaniel back, but heโ€™s unwilling,โ€ Elena sighed. โ€œAnd Ceciliaโ€ฆ sheโ€™s not easily handled.โ€

Another thought struck her. โ€œCassandra took the melody last time! I wonder how her blind date with Nicholas went?โ€

โ€œMr. Nicholas said itโ€™s fine, everything is up to your arrangement,โ€ the secretary reassured her.

Elena sighed in relief. โ€œIf only Nathaniel were as obedient as Nicholas.โ€

โ€œHeโ€™ll understand your hardships eventually,โ€ the secretary offered.

โ€œHopefully,โ€ Elena said, her tone softening. โ€œWe still need to solve the Jonathan situation.โ€

โ€œYes.โ€
