Chapter 411: I Am Not Nicholas
Nathanielโs expression remained unchanged, even as the silence lingered. Cecilia, attempting to ease the tension, asked, โWerenโt you supposed to be at work today?โ
Nathanielโs handsome features darkened. He hadnโt left the house; there was no work to be done. โThere was no need to work today,โ he replied curtly.
โAll right then, get some rest,โ Cecilia said, rising.
Nathaniel blocked her path. โIs that all you have to say?โ he demanded.
Ceciliaโs thoughts drifted to the previous night. Sighing, she said, โEnough. I have work to do now.โ
As she turned to leave, Nathaniel pulled her into his embrace. His Adamโs apple bobbed as he murmured intensely, โCecilia, rememberโIโm not Nicholas, and I could never be.โ
Startled, Cecilia looked up, her eyes wide. โDid you remember something?โ
โNo,โ he replied, his hand gently caressing her face. โI donโt like you mistaking me for someone else.โ
Cecilia averted her gaze. โI didnโt mean toโฆ it was a slip of the tongue,โ she murmured.
โIs that so? It better be,โ Nathaniel responded sharply.
His phone rang, breaking the tension. While he answered, Cecilia slipped away and left the room, heading to the music room to compose. Nathanielโs mood soured as he answered.
โWhatโs the matter?โ he asked curtly.
โMr. Rainsworth, suspicious activity near your residence. We apprehended someone who confessed to being sent by Madam Elena,โ the bodyguard reported.
Nathanielโs eyes narrowed. โWhat was he supposed to do?โ
โHe was watching a child.โ
Only Jon was there. Why Elenaโs focus on him?
Nathaniel instructed, โTake him back to the Rainsworth residence.โ
โUnderstood.โ
At the residence, the wounded man was thrown before Elena, interrupting her flower arranging. A cold flicker crossed her eyes.
โFound out? Did you get the hair?โ she demanded.
The man shook his head. โI didnโt get the chance.โ
โUseless!โ Elena snapped, throwing down her scissors.
The man trembled. โMr. Nathaniel said not to send anyone again, or elseโฆ or elseโฆโ
โOr else what?โ Elenaโs expression froze.
โOr heโll turn his back on his family,โ the man whispered.
Elenaโs face darkened. โGet out.โ
Unease settled over her. Since last seeing Cecilia and the child, sheโd been discreetly watching Ceciliaโs residence. Jonathan had stayed with Cecilia for days, then moved in with Vivian. This fueled her curiosity.
Sheโd initially investigated whether Jonathan and Cecilia were related, but hadn't obtained hair or blood samples.
โMrs. Rainsworth, no need to distress yourself,โ her secretary suggested. โWith Mr. Nicholas in charge, perhaps we could bring back Mr. Nathaniel and Ms. Smith. Truths will come to light.โ
โI want Nathaniel back, but heโs unwilling,โ Elena sighed. โAnd Ceciliaโฆ sheโs not easily handled.โ
Another thought struck her. โCassandra took the melody last time! I wonder how her blind date with Nicholas went?โ
โMr. Nicholas said itโs fine, everything is up to your arrangement,โ the secretary reassured her.
Elena sighed in relief. โIf only Nathaniel were as obedient as Nicholas.โ
โHeโll understand your hardships eventually,โ the secretary offered.
โHopefully,โ Elena said, her tone softening. โWe still need to solve the Jonathan situation.โ
โYes.โ
