Chapter 418: I Cannot Bear to Throw You Out

Cecilia felt a sudden rush of concern. She faintly heard Vivianโ€™s father, Roland, shouting, โ€œWhoโ€™s the father of that child? Iโ€™ll kill him!โ€ The sounds of shattering vases and overturned furniture followed.

Jonathan also heard the commotion. He quickly said, โ€œMommy, I canโ€™t talk now. I need to check on Ms. Kennedy. Iโ€™ll make sure Grandpa doesnโ€™t hurt her.โ€ Cecilia barely managed an โ€œOkayโ€ before the line went dead.

Back at Vivianโ€™s home, Jonathan found the living room in chaos. Vivian lay nonchalantly on the couch, seemingly unmoved by her fatherโ€™s rage. Roland stormed about, knocking over objects, but carefully avoiding his daughter.

โ€œDad, please stop,โ€ Vivian yawned, unfazed. โ€œI donโ€™t even know who the father is. It was a fleeting encounter. Please stop pushing me toward Zachary, and donโ€™t arrange more blind dates. No rich heir will accept a woman with a child.โ€

Roland was stunned. He hadnโ€™t expected her genuine uncertainty, feeling humiliated and utterly embarrassed. โ€œYou never learn! Youโ€™ve embarrassed me completely! I swear, Iโ€™m going to beat you!โ€ he shouted, raising his hand. โ€œDo you truly not know? If you donโ€™t, Iโ€™ll throw that kid out!โ€

Just as he was about to strike, Jonathan stepped forward, grabbing Rolandโ€™s coat. โ€œGrandpa, please donโ€™t hit Mommy. If youโ€™re angry, hit me instead,โ€ he pleaded, puffing out his chest.

Roland looked down at the small child, whose sense of responsibility belied his size. The sight softened him.

โ€œSweetie,โ€ Roland said gently, โ€œgo back to your room. Iโ€™m not hitting your mom; Iโ€™m justโ€ฆ patting her shoulder.โ€ He gave Vivian a firm pat.

Vivian rolled her eyes. She never imagined her stern father showing such tenderness toward Jonathan. It was almost sickeningly sweet.

โ€œGrandpa, are you still going to send me away?โ€ Jonathan asked, his eyes fixed on Roland.

Roland couldnโ€™t bear the thought of losing the well-behaved child. โ€œSilly boy,โ€ he said affectionately, โ€œyou misunderstood. I wasnโ€™t talking about youโ€”I was talking about that stray cat. Youโ€™re my treasure. Even if I threw your mom out, I couldnโ€™t bear to do the same to you.โ€

Jonathan, experiencing this affection for the first time, felt warmth fill his heart. โ€œGrandpa, Iโ€™ll definitely take good care of you when I grow up,โ€ he promised.

โ€œAll right, Iโ€™ll wait. Letโ€™s go insideโ€”itโ€™s cold. In a few days, Iโ€™ll buy you a big room. Iโ€™ll take care of you, sweetie,โ€ Roland said, leading Jonathan inside. โ€œTomorrow, letโ€™s go shopping for clothes, shoes, and toys, okay?โ€

Vivian watched them go, feeling a wave of fear. What if her father discovered Jonathan wasnโ€™t his grandson? Would he still be kind? She decided to worry about that later.

She called Cecilia back, assuring her everything was fine. Relieved, Cecilia called Elliot.

Elliot, having just lain down but not yet asleep, saw Ceciliaโ€™s call and his eyes lit up. โ€œMommy, why didnโ€™t you come see me today? Are you still mad at me?โ€ he asked, his voice worried. His secret visit to the Rainsworth Manor had genuinely frightened him with Cecilia's anger.
