Chapter 418: I Cannot Bear to Throw You Out
Cecilia felt a sudden rush of concern. She faintly heard Vivianโs father, Roland, shouting, โWhoโs the father of that child? Iโll kill him!โ The sounds of shattering vases and overturned furniture followed.
Jonathan also heard the commotion. He quickly said, โMommy, I canโt talk now. I need to check on Ms. Kennedy. Iโll make sure Grandpa doesnโt hurt her.โ Cecilia barely managed an โOkayโ before the line went dead.
Back at Vivianโs home, Jonathan found the living room in chaos. Vivian lay nonchalantly on the couch, seemingly unmoved by her fatherโs rage. Roland stormed about, knocking over objects, but carefully avoiding his daughter.
โDad, please stop,โ Vivian yawned, unfazed. โI donโt even know who the father is. It was a fleeting encounter. Please stop pushing me toward Zachary, and donโt arrange more blind dates. No rich heir will accept a woman with a child.โ
Roland was stunned. He hadnโt expected her genuine uncertainty, feeling humiliated and utterly embarrassed. โYou never learn! Youโve embarrassed me completely! I swear, Iโm going to beat you!โ he shouted, raising his hand. โDo you truly not know? If you donโt, Iโll throw that kid out!โ
Just as he was about to strike, Jonathan stepped forward, grabbing Rolandโs coat. โGrandpa, please donโt hit Mommy. If youโre angry, hit me instead,โ he pleaded, puffing out his chest.
Roland looked down at the small child, whose sense of responsibility belied his size. The sight softened him.
โSweetie,โ Roland said gently, โgo back to your room. Iโm not hitting your mom; Iโm justโฆ patting her shoulder.โ He gave Vivian a firm pat.
Vivian rolled her eyes. She never imagined her stern father showing such tenderness toward Jonathan. It was almost sickeningly sweet.
โGrandpa, are you still going to send me away?โ Jonathan asked, his eyes fixed on Roland.
Roland couldnโt bear the thought of losing the well-behaved child. โSilly boy,โ he said affectionately, โyou misunderstood. I wasnโt talking about youโI was talking about that stray cat. Youโre my treasure. Even if I threw your mom out, I couldnโt bear to do the same to you.โ
Jonathan, experiencing this affection for the first time, felt warmth fill his heart. โGrandpa, Iโll definitely take good care of you when I grow up,โ he promised.
โAll right, Iโll wait. Letโs go insideโitโs cold. In a few days, Iโll buy you a big room. Iโll take care of you, sweetie,โ Roland said, leading Jonathan inside. โTomorrow, letโs go shopping for clothes, shoes, and toys, okay?โ
Vivian watched them go, feeling a wave of fear. What if her father discovered Jonathan wasnโt his grandson? Would he still be kind? She decided to worry about that later.
She called Cecilia back, assuring her everything was fine. Relieved, Cecilia called Elliot.
Elliot, having just lain down but not yet asleep, saw Ceciliaโs call and his eyes lit up. โMommy, why didnโt you come see me today? Are you still mad at me?โ he asked, his voice worried. His secret visit to the Rainsworth Manor had genuinely frightened him with Cecilia's anger.
