Chapter 430: It Was To Protect You
After assisting Nicholas home, Cecilia returned to her own residence. Stepping into the living room, she was met with a chillingly cold temperature; the heating was unexpectedly off. She pulled her coat tighter as she saw Nathaniel sitting alone on the couch, his handsome face expressionless and cold. Cecilia rarely saw him like this since his memory loss.
โWhy isnโt the heater on? Arenโt you cold?โ she asked.
Nathanielโs gaze fell upon her. โHow could I possibly be cold when Iโm enveloped in fire?โ
His sarcasm deepened her confusion. โWhat do you mean? Whatโs this about being enveloped in fire?โ
Nathaniel hadn't expected her continued bewilderment. He tossed a stack of photographs at her, scattering them across the floor. Each showed Cecilia and Nicholas in intimate embraces.
Even though Nathaniel was blind, he could hearโand the photos were for Cecilia's benefit. Cecilia's initial surprise quickly morphed into indignation. She strode toward him. โDid you arrange for someone to secretly photograph me?โ she demanded. She'd assumed he'd changed, but clearly, he hadn't.
Nathanielโs voice hitched. โIs the point that I had someone secretly photograph you?โ Cecilia almost believed he wasn't blind, were it not for the direction of his gaze.
โNicholas is my younger brother and your brother-in-law. How could you possibly be involved with him?โ The words were cold, but he immediately regretted them; he didn't want her with anyone else.
A resounding slap landed on his face. Nathaniel's face burned.
โHis old ailment flared up, and I was simply supporting him. How does that equate to me getting together with him? Do you enjoy being cheated on that much?โ Ceciliaโs voice was hoarse with anger and hurt.
Nathanielโs confidence deflated. Cecilia continued, โEven if there was anything between him and me, why now, at the Rainsworth residence, and for you to discover it?โ
Nathaniel, knowing he was wrong, remained silent. Ceciliaโs hands still trembled.
โDid you forget what I told you? I only took you in temporarily; weโre still getting a divorce. What gives you the right to monitor me?โ
Nathanielโs anger further dissipated. He realized his ridiculous confrontation, his lack of investigation. Heโd sensed Ceciliaโs growing forgiveness. He abandoned his usual aloofness, softening his voice. โI didnโt have someone follow you to spy; it was to protect you. Mason mentioned your previous accidents, and I was concerned for your safety.โ
Cecilia remained unconvinced. โDo you need to secretly take photos to protect me? How about I have someone protect you in the same way in the future?โ
Nathaniel was speechless. His usually compliant wife now seemed elusive.
โTonight, youโll be sleeping downstairs alone.โ With a resounding bang, she slammed the door. This was the first time Nathaniel had been banished from his own bedroom. He knew he deserved it.
